Home Care in London Fields

Personal care, company and live-in care in E8, around the park, Broadway Market, Mare Street and the estates running towards Haggerston and Queensbridge Road.

Yes. We provide visiting and live-in care in the streets around London Fields, from the terraces off Broadway Market to the estates towards Queensbridge Road and Mare Street. This southern half of Hackney is within realistic reach of our Lewisham office, though visits still depend on having a carer free at your times, and every arrangement starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.

Between the park and Mare Street

The park itself is the centre of the area: 12.65 hectares of open grass, with a heated 50-metre lido. Broadway Market runs south from the park to the Regent's Canal, and Mare Street forms the eastern boundary. The period terraces nearby are now some of the most expensive streets in Hackney, but many of the people who have lived here longest are council tenants, on the estates towards Haggerston and Queensbridge Road, including the Holly Street estate, and in the blocks off Mare Street.

That mix shapes what care looks like. A converted Victorian house usually means an upper flat with a steep internal staircase and a bathroom at the top of it. An estate flat means a lift, or several flights of stairs, between the person and the street. Either way, the plan should cover getting out as well as care indoors: a walk round the park or a coffee on Broadway Market is what companionship visits are for.

How much does home care cost in London Fields?

It depends on how many visits are needed each day, how long they are and what happens in them, so we give a written quote after the assessment and not over the phone.

A point worth knowing on streets where house prices have climbed as far as they have here: for care at home, the council's means test does not count the value of the home the person lives in. The Care and Support Statutory Guidance sets this out at paragraph 8.43. So an owner of a valuable terrace near the park is assessed on savings and income, not the house. Ask Hackney Adult Social Care for a needs assessment through its online request or on 020 8356 6262; our Hackney home care page explains direct payments and NHS Continuing Healthcare.

The Marie Lloyd Centre on Queensbridge Road

The most useful local address for an older person or a family carer in E8 is the Marie Lloyd Centre at 329 Queensbridge Road, by the Holly Street estate north-west of the park. It houses Age UK East London, the City & Hackney Carers Centre and the Holly Street Luncheon Club, and runs exercise, falls prevention and chair-based activities. A carer can take a parent along and bring them home, and family carers can ask the Carers Centre (020 8533 0951) to request a carer's assessment.

Low-traffic streets and the market subzone. London Fields is inside one of Hackney's low-traffic neighbourhoods, so driving between addresses can mean long detours. Most of the area is parking zone J (Queensbridge), controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays, but the streets in and around Broadway Market are controlled on Saturdays too. Our carers usually come by Overground or bus.

Stations and buses

London Fields and Cambridge Heath stations are both on the Overground Weaver line to Liverpool Street. Mare Street has the 26, 55, 106, 254 and 388; the 236 and 394 serve Broadway Market; the 394 continues along Richmond Road; and the 277 also stops on Mare Street. The local GP practice is London Fields Medical Centre at 38-44 Broadway Market.

When care is about the end of life

St Joseph's Hospice is on Mare Street, E8, a short distance from London Fields. If someone with a terminal illness wants to stay at home, our palliative care can work alongside the hospice's community team and the district nurses: personal care, turning and comfort, help with eating and drinking, and someone in the house so the family can rest. A live-in carer is often the most practical option in the last weeks, if there is a spare room.

Live-in care and respite

Spare rooms are common in the larger houses and rare in estate flats, so ask about live-in care early. For a family member doing the caring, respite care can be a sit-in afternoon each week or a live-in carer for a fortnight while they are away.

London Fields FAQs

London Fields: what families ask

Questions families ask us about London Fields. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum lives in an upper flat on a terrace near the park. Can she stay there?

Often, yes, as long as she can still manage the stairs with help. We will look at rails, a second banister and what the council's occupational therapist can add. If the stairs become unsafe, we will tell you honestly.

Can a carer take Dad to the Marie Lloyd Centre's lunch club?

Yes. We can time a visit so he is washed, dressed and ready, walk or travel with him, and collect him afterwards, as long as we have a carer free at those times.

Will you work with St Joseph's Hospice?

Yes, if your family member is under their care. We work to the plan the hospice and the district nurses set, report changes to them and the family, and do not take over clinical tasks that belong to the nurses.

Does the low-traffic neighbourhood stop carers getting here?

No. Our carers mostly come by train, bus or on foot, and the filters only affect cars. If a carer does need to drive, we plan the route and parking with you.

Do you cover Cambridge Heath and the canal side of Broadway Market?

Yes, along with Haggerston, Queensbridge Road and the streets off Mare Street. Parts of Cambridge Heath are in Tower Hamlets, so check which council the address falls under before asking for funding.
