Home Care and Live-in Care in Stamford Hill

Care at home on the Hackney side of Stamford Hill, N16: around the Broadway, Clapton Common, Egerton Road, Amhurst Park and the streets running down to Upper Clapton.

We provide care in Stamford Hill mainly as live-in care, which works in any home with a spare bedroom for the carer. Visiting care is possible too, but this is the far northern tip of Hackney and over an hour from our Lewisham office, so we only agree visits once we know we have a carer who can cover them. A free home assessment comes first, then a written care plan.

First check: Hackney or Haringey?

Stamford Hill sits right on the borough boundary. The N16 streets south of the hill are Hackney; north of it, towards South Tottenham and the N15 postcodes, you are in Haringey. It matters because the council where the person lives is the one that assesses and funds care. The council tax bill settles it. For a Haringey address, start with Haringey Council's social care pages; for Hackney, read on.

Care that fits an Orthodox Jewish home

Stamford Hill is home to one of Europe's largest Charedi communities, and a care plan here has to fit the household, not the other way round. At the assessment we ask about the things that shape the day:

  • The kitchen. Separate meat and dairy utensils, which cupboards are which, and what may and may not be brought into the house. Carers follow the family's rules.
  • Shabbat and festivals. What needs doing before Friday evening, and how care runs until Saturday night when the family is not using electrical items or the phone.
  • Modesty. Who is comfortable giving and receiving personal care. If personal care must come from a carer of the same sex, say so at the first call and we plan for it from the start.
  • A busy household. Large families, lots of visitors, and a carer who has to fit in around them.

We cannot promise a carer from the community, but we can promise to write all of this into the care plan and to brief every carer on it.

Why live-in care suits the bigger houses here

Much of Stamford Hill is large Victorian and Edwardian houses, and some still have a room a carer can use. That is the main practical requirement for live-in care in Hackney. In a house full of family, the bedroom may already be taken, so it is worth checking early. Alongside the houses are interwar and post-war council blocks, where a working lift and the size of the bathroom are the things to look at.

Parking and transport

Parking is easier than in the rest of Hackney. The Stamford Hill zones (T, W and Y) only run from 10am to midday on weekdays, so a carer who drives is not paying for a permit at every visit. By public transport, Stamford Hill station is on the Weaver line from Liverpool Street, Seven Sisters on the Victoria line is just over the Haringey border, and the 253, 254 and 318 buses, along with the 67, 76, 149 and 243, meet at the Broadway.

Who pays for home care in Stamford Hill?

For a Hackney address, ask Hackney Adult Social Care for a needs assessment online or on 020 8356 6262. If the needs are eligible, the council looks at income and savings. The NHS guide to paying for your own care explains that people with more than £23,250 in savings usually pay for their care themselves. Below that, the council contributes and can pay its share as a direct payment. Someone whose needs are mainly health needs may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare. We quote in writing after our assessment. The borough route is set out on our Hackney home care page.

Local surgeries

The Stamford Hill Group Practice is at 2 Egerton Road, and the Spring Hill Practice is on Belfast Road. Hackney residents are usually discharged from Homerton University Hospital in E9, a bus ride south.

A break for the family carer

In a large family, one person often ends up doing most of the caring. A live-in carer for a week or two can cover a family simcha or time away, and the City & Hackney Carers Centre (020 8533 0951) can help request a carer's assessment from the council. See respite care in Hackney.

Stamford Hill FAQs

Families in Stamford Hill ask

Questions families ask us about Stamford Hill. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Can we have a female carer for my mother?

Yes. Tell us at the first call. Same-sex personal care is written into the care plan, and we only offer carers who meet it; if we cannot staff that for the times you need, we will say so.

Will a live-in carer keep our kitchen kosher?

They will follow the rules your family sets. We go through the kitchen at the assessment, write down what goes where, and the carer is briefed before they arrive. If something is unclear, they ask before they act.

What happens on Shabbat if we cannot use the phone?

We agree a plan beforehand: what the carer does, what is prepared on Friday, and how an emergency is handled. The carer can still call for help if needed, and that is agreed with you in advance.

Our address says Stamford Hill but the postcode is N15. Can you help?

Yes. N15 is Haringey, so Haringey Council handles any assessment and funding, but we can provide private care on either side of the border.

Do you have an office in Stamford Hill?

No. Our only office is on Lewisham High Street. Jackie, our registered manager, oversees every care plan from there, including the ones in N16.
