Home Care in Clapton, E5

Personal care, dementia support and help after hospital for people in Lower and Upper Clapton, from Clapton Pond and the Clapton Park estate up to Springfield Park and the Lea.

We can provide home care across Clapton. In Lower Clapton, near Clapton Pond and Homerton, regular visits are often workable; in Upper Clapton they depend on having a carer who lives close enough, so we check before we commit. Live-in care is available throughout E5, and every arrangement begins with a free assessment at home.

Lower Clapton or Upper Clapton?

The Clapton Road is one long street, but it splits into two quite different jobs for a care agency.

Lower Clapton, running north from Hackney Central past Clapton Pond, is a short distance from Homerton University Hospital and well served by buses: the 38, 55, 106, 242, 253, 254, 425 and 488 all pass near the pond. Hackney Downs station on the Weaver line is close, and from here visits are easier to staff.

Upper Clapton, north of Clapton station towards Springfield Park and the River Lea, is a longer trip from Lewisham, about an hour or more. The 253 and 254 run the length of Upper Clapton Road. Here we are more likely to suggest live-in care, or visits only when we have a nearby carer.

Parking differs too. Lower Clapton falls in zone N (Homerton and Lower Clapton), which starts at 7.30am on weekdays; Upper Clapton's zone U runs Monday to Saturday, although its northern section is only controlled for two hours on weekday mornings.

Clapton Park, the Nightingale and the terraces

East of the Clapton Road, the Clapton Park estate runs down towards the Lea, and the Nightingale Estate sits off Kenninghall Road. Many older residents have lived in these flats for decades. West of the road are the long Victorian terraces, almost all now upper and lower flats. For care at home, that means two sets of questions: on the estates, the lift and the space for equipment; in the terraces, the stairs and the bath. We go through both at the assessment and can point you to Hackney's occupational therapy service for adaptations.

Days at Oswald Street

Hackney Council's own day centre for adults with complex needs, including dementia, learning disabilities and physical disabilities, is on Oswald Street in Lower Clapton, E5 0BT. It opened in 2018 with a sensory garden and a skills kitchen, and places come through an adult social care assessment. Day centre days and home care fit together well: a carer can help someone get washed, dressed and ready before the transport arrives, and settle them again in the evening.

Coming home from Homerton

Clapton is next door to Homerton University Hospital, so most discharges here come from Homerton. Hackney often starts people on short-term reablement after a stay. If ongoing care will be needed when that ends, call us before the last reablement visit so there is no gap. See hospital discharge support.

Does Hackney Council pay for home care in Clapton?

It may, and one assessment can open several doors. The same Hackney Adult Social Care assessment that decides on home care is also how a place at Oswald Street is agreed, so if both might help, ask about both when you request it through the council's online request or on 020 8356 6262. A financial assessment then settles what the person pays.

In Upper Clapton, where visiting cover from us depends on carer availability, a direct payment is worth asking about: it lets you choose the agency that can actually staff the address, or combine agencies. We quote in writing after our own assessment and do not publish prices. The borough-wide process is on our Hackney home care page.

Live-in care and respite

In Upper Clapton especially, live-in care is often the practical answer, as long as there is a spare room. For family carers, the City & Hackney Carers Centre can help you request a carer's assessment, and we can cover a short break with visits or a live-in carer. More on respite care in Hackney.

Clapton FAQs

Clapton: your questions

Questions families ask us about Clapton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My brother goes to Oswald Street three days a week. Can you get him ready on those mornings?

Yes, if we can staff the times. Tell us when the transport comes and we will plan the visit backwards from it, with enough time that he is not rushed out of the door.

Mum lives near Springfield Park. Is that too far for visits?

Not always, but it is the far end of Clapton from us. We will check whether we have a carer who can cover her times reliably, and if not, we will say so and talk about live-in care.

Can you take over from Hackney's reablement team?

Yes, if we have a carer for the times needed. Ask the council what it will fund once reablement ends, and give us the end date so the first visit lands the day after the last reablement call.

Do you support people with dementia in Clapton?

Yes. Dementia is one of our registered specialisms. If there is no diagnosis yet, a GP can refer to the NHS memory clinic on Felstead Street in Homerton. See dementia care.

Is Clapton Park estate in Clapton or Homerton?

Both names get used. It makes no difference to us or to the council: it is Hackney, E5, and we cover it on the same basis.
