Home Care in Wood Green, N22

Visiting and live-in care around Wood Green High Road, Turnpike Lane, the Noel Park estate and the streets below Alexandra Palace.

Yes, we provide home care in Wood Green, starting with a free home assessment by Jackie, our registered manager, and a written care plan. Wood Green and Turnpike Lane are on the Piccadilly line, which makes N22 one of the easier parts of Haringey for a carer to reach from south London, though visiting care still depends on who is free at the times you need. Live-in care is available anywhere in N22.

Is Wood Green easy for carers to reach?

By public transport, yes. From our Lewisham office it is roughly 45 to 55 minutes: a train into central London, the Victoria line to Finsbury Park, then the Piccadilly line two or three stops to Turnpike Lane or Wood Green. Alexandra Palace station, on the Great Northern line, serves the western streets. Once here, the 29, 141, 144, 221 and W3 are among the many buses through the town centre.

By car, it is the hardest part of the borough to park in. The Wood Green Inner controlled parking zone runs from 8am to 10pm, seven days a week, and the Outer zone from 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday (see the council's CPZ hours list). If a carer drives to you, the person receiving care can apply for Haringey's free resident care at home permit, a paper permit any of their carers can display, valid in the zone printed on it. It does not cover parking areas on council estates, where visitor permits (free to estate residents) are the route.

Noel Park cottages, flats over the Mall, and new towers

The streets east of the High Road are mostly the Noel Park estate, more than 2,000 terraced cottages, the first opened in 1883, built by the Artizans', Labourers' and General Dwellings Company and now a conservation area. They are low and easy to get into, but the conservation rules restrict changes to the front of the house, so ask the council before planning a ramp or a new front path.

Around the High Road and The Mall, the shopping centre that opened in 1981, people live in flats above shops, in council blocks and in newer high-rise. A modern block with lifts makes wheelchair access and a hoist much simpler. An older walk-up does not, and if a lift is out of action we need to know how meals and medication will still get to the person.

Towards Alexandra Palace the houses are larger Victorian and Edwardian terraces, some with a spare bedroom: the main requirement for live-in care.

Shopping is part of the care. Wood Green is Haringey's main shopping centre, and for someone who still enjoys getting out, a slow trip down the High Road with a carer is worth more than a delivery. That is what a companionship visit or home help can include.

Will Haringey Council pay for home care in Wood Green?

It may, after two assessments: a needs assessment and a financial one. Start with the council's Ask us about care and support page or call 020 8489 1400, pressing 1 and then the option for your area. We don't publish prices. We give you a written quote after our own assessment, and our guide to paying for care explains the means test and NHS Continuing Healthcare.

Direct payments: support close to home

If the council agrees to fund care, it can pay the money to you as a direct payment, so you choose the agency. The council's Direct Payment Support Team is on 020 8489 8456. Disability Action Haringey, which the council lists for peer support with direct payments and finding personal assistants, is based in N22 at the Winkfield Resource Centre on Winkfield Road (020 3355 0071). We are happy to be paid from a direct payment.

Live-in care and short breaks in N22

A live-in carer needs a spare bedroom, which a Noel Park cottage or a two-bedroom flat can usually offer. One carer can look after a couple. For family carers who need a break, we can cover a week or two at home through respite care, or provide a sit-in for an afternoon. Our Haringey page covers carers' assessments and the wider council route.

Wood Green FAQs

Wood Green questions

Questions families ask us about Wood Green. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My dad lives in the Inner parking zone. Who pays for the carer's parking?

Usually nobody needs to. As someone receiving care at home, he can apply for the council's free care at home permit, which covers the 8am to 10pm Inner zone hours in resident and permit holder bays. Carers who come by Tube or bus don't need one at all. If he lives on a council estate, the permit does not cover the estate's own parking, but estate visitor permits are free.

Can we put a ramp at the front of a Noel Park house?

Possibly, but Noel Park is a conservation area with controls on changes to the front of houses, so check with Haringey's planning team first. The council's occupational therapist can also advise on equipment that doesn't need building work.

Which hospital will Mum be discharged from?

Wood Green sits between the two. North Middlesex in Edmonton takes much of central and eastern Haringey, and the Whittington in Archway the west. Either way, tell us early in the discharge planning so we can check what we can staff.

We already use a direct payment. Can we switch to you?

Yes. A direct payment is yours to spend on the agreed care, so you can choose us. Let the council's Direct Payment Support Team know about the change.

Do you cover Turnpike Lane and the streets near Alexandra Palace?

Yes. We cover all of N22, including Turnpike Lane, Noel Park, Wood Green town centre, Alexandra Park and the edge of Bounds Green.
