Live-in Care in Southgate
One carer living in a Southgate house so that a husband and wife can stay together, or so that someone on their own can keep the home they have had since the 1960s.
Yes, we provide live-in care in Southgate, N14, for one person or for a couple. The carer has the spare bedroom and works to one written plan for the household, agreed after Jackie, our registered manager, has assessed you both at home for free. Southgate is over an hour from our Lewisham office, but that only affects the carer's journey in, not the care.
Can one live-in carer look after both of us?
Often, yes. This is the situation live-in care handles best, and Southgate's family-sized houses make it practical. Say one partner needs full help with washing, dressing and the stairs, perhaps after a stroke or with dementia, and the other is managing but tired, and finding the cooking, shopping and driving harder.
A single carer can give personal care to the first and practical support to the second, and keep the house running for both. We assess you together and write one plan covering the whole household, and the quote reflects both people's needs. The arrangement reaches its limit when there is something one carer cannot do safely alone, such as a transfer that needs a second person, or when nights are regularly broken. If we can see that coming, we say so at the assessment and set out what extra cover would look like.
The carer's room in a 1930s semi
Most of Southgate was built around the 1933 Piccadilly line station, and the typical home is a three-bedroom semi or a detached house. Even with both partners in the main bedroom, there is usually a second bedroom for the carer and often a third for visiting family.
The pressure point is usually the first floor. With one bathroom upstairs and a bath with no shower, two people who both find the stairs hard may need a stairlift, a downstairs shower room, or one partner sleeping in the front room for a while. When you both struggle with the stairs, the order in which the house is adapted matters, and we plan the care around each stage. In the 1930s flats and maisonettes around Southgate Circus, a second bedroom is less certain, so check before you plan on live-in care. Our home care in Southgate page covers visiting care if it is not possible.
Changeovers on the Piccadilly line
Southgate and Arnos Grove stations are both on the Piccadilly line, so a carer arriving to start, or a replacement covering a holiday, comes straight out to N14 on one line once they reach central London. We introduce a replacement before the changeover so neither of you meets a stranger at the door.
Enfield has run a controlled parking zone around Arnos Grove station since 1997, and roads close to Southgate station and the shops may also be controlled. If you live inside a zone, you can buy books of visitor vouchers from the council for family who drive over. Many streets further out have no permit scheme, so check the signs where you are.
Where the carer goes on their daily break
A live-in carer takes a protected break every day, and with two people at home, one partner may be able to keep the other company for that time. If not, a relative can call in or it can be built into the plan.
Grovelands Park and Arnos Park, where the Piccadilly line crosses the valley on its brick viaduct, are both within reach for a walk. Southgate Library on the High Street was one of seven Enfield libraries that closed in July 2025. Palmers Green, Oakwood and Ridge Avenue libraries all stayed open and are the closest. The council kept its home library service, which can bring books to someone who no longer gets out.
Which hospital, and which council?
Southgate sits between two A&Es. The west of N14 is nearer Barnet Hospital and the east nearer North Middlesex in Edmonton; both are Royal Free London hospitals. If one of you is in hospital and the other is at home alone, a live-in carer can start with the partner at home and be ready when the other comes back. Call us while the ward is still planning. See our hospital discharge support.
Part of N14, towards Osidge, comes under Barnet, not Enfield. For a couple, both needs assessments go through whichever council you pay council tax to.
Paying for live-in care for a couple
A council assesses each partner's needs separately, and the means test looks at each person's own money and their share of anything held jointly. The home you both live in is not counted for care at home. Our Enfield live-in care page covers the council's route, and NHS Continuing Healthcare may apply where needs are mainly medical. The partner who has been doing the caring can ask Enfield Carers Centre for a carer's assessment. We give one written quote for the household after the free assessment, and our live-in care page explains placements in more detail.

Southgate live-in care: questions from couples
Questions families ask us about Southgate. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy husband has dementia and I have a bad hip. Will the carer help me too, or only him?
Both of you, if we write it into the plan. The carer can give him personal care and help you with the shopping, cooking and anything the hip makes hard. We assess you both on the same visit.
We only have one bathroom, upstairs. Can a carer share it with us?
Yes. Sharing a bathroom is normal in live-in care. We agree times at the start so mornings run smoothly, and plan how each of you will get up the stairs safely to use it.
If my wife goes into Barnet Hospital, can the carer stay at home with me?
Yes, if you need support yourself. The carer carries on looking after you, can help you visit her, and is there to help when she comes home.
Can we try live-in care for a couple of weeks first?
Yes. A short placement lets you both see how it feels to share the house with a carer, and the partner who has been caring gets a break at the same time. See our respite care page.
