Live-in Care in Acton

A carer living in with your relative in W3, whether home is a split terrace off Churchfield Road, a flat on the South Acton estate or a new block by North Acton station.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Acton. One carer moves into the home, keeps a bedroom of their own and covers personal care, meals, medication and company through the day, with a second carer booked ahead for their time off. It begins with a free assessment at the address, where we look at the building as closely as the person's needs, and a written care plan follows.

Is there room for a live-in carer in an Acton home?

What counts is the number of bedrooms, not the size of the home. The carer needs a room with a bed, somewhere for their things and a door that closes. In W3 the answer turns on the building more than the street. A whole terraced house off Churchfield Road nearly always has a room to spare. A split terrace is harder: a two-bedroom maisonette can work if the person can still manage its internal stair with the carer beside them, or if their bed comes down to the main floor. On the South Acton estate many council flats have a second bedroom, so there the question is the lift, covered below. In the newer blocks around North Acton, check that the second room is a bedroom with a window and space for a bed, not a box room sold as a study.

If the flat has one bedroom, we will say so plainly. Our home care in Acton page covers visiting care, which depends on carer availability at this distance from Lewisham.

Tower blocks and the regeneration

On an upper floor of the South Acton estate, a working lift decides whether someone in a wheelchair can get to appointments at all. A live-in carer changes what happens when it fails: there is someone already in the flat, so meals, medication and personal care carry on, and nobody has to get up the stairs to bring them. We write a lift-failure plan into the care plan, including who the carer calls. If the person cannot use stairs at all, ask the landlord about an evacuation plan and share it with us.

The estate's long-running regeneration means some residents are moving to new homes. A move is unsettling for anyone and harder for someone living with dementia. A carer who already lives with the person keeps meals, tablets and bedtimes steady through the packing and the first nights somewhere unfamiliar. Tell the housing officer early that a carer stays overnight, so the need for a carer's room is on record before a new home is offered.

The borough's carers' centre is in W3. Ealing Carers Hub is at Sycamore Lodge on Edgecote Close. Its one-to-one advice is for the husband, wife or adult child still doing part of the caring alongside a live-in carer.

Changeover day: trains, zones and timing

At a changeover one live-in carer hands over to the next, and Acton makes that easy. Acton Main Line on Horn Lane reopened with step-free access to all platforms in March 2021, which helps a carer arriving on the Elizabeth line with a suitcase. The Central line calls at North, East and West Acton, the District and Piccadilly lines at Acton Town, and the Overground at South Acton and Acton Central.

For a carer who drives, the controlled zones here are short. Zone J (Acton Town) operates Monday to Friday from 9am to 10am and 3pm to 4pm; Zone E (East Acton) and Zone SA (South Acton estate) run from 9am to 10am and 2pm to 3pm. A handover planned around those hours may need no permit at all. If it cannot be, the resident can buy visitor sessions for the carer through PayByPhone.

Coming home from Hammersmith, Charing Cross or Ealing Hospital

East Acton families often deal with Imperial: Hammersmith Hospital is on Du Cane Road, a short walk from East Acton station, and Charing Cross is in Fulham. Others are treated at Ealing Hospital in Southall, or at Central Middlesex in Park Royal. Social care still runs through Ealing Council, whichever ward it is.

Live-in care fits discharge well here because the first nights home are the risky ones, and a carer is in the flat for all of them. Call us while the person is still on the ward, and ask whether an NHS Continuing Healthcare checklist has been done. Our hospital discharge page explains how we work with wards.

Where the carer takes a daily break

A live-in carer needs time off every day, away from the job. Acton Park, entered from the Uxbridge Road, has a café, a pond and a bowling green. Acton Town Hall Library on the High Street, inside the leisure centre, has a lift to its first-floor rooms.

The person can get out too, for a coffee in the park or a slow loop of the High Street. For someone over 55 with a dementia diagnosis, a place at the council's Michael Flanders Centre on Church Road can be agreed through an adult social care assessment.

Paying for it

We quote in writing after the free assessment. Ealing Council may contribute after a needs assessment and a means test. If the person's needs are mainly health needs, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. Being discharged from Hammersmith or Charing Cross does not move that decision to another area: the NHS body responsible is normally the one for the person's GP practice, which for an Acton patient is NHS North West London. The council route is set out on our live-in care in Ealing page, and live-in care across London explains the service in full.

Acton live-in care: your questions

Questions families ask us about Acton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad's new-build flat near North Acton has a second room we use as an office. Does that count?

It can, if it is cleared and set up as a bedroom the carer can close the door on, with a bed and somewhere to keep their things. We look at it during the assessment.

Does the relief carer need a parking permit in Zone J?

Only during its operating hours, which are short. Many carers arrive by train anyway. If one drives at a controlled time, you buy a visitor session for them through PayByPhone.

He is in Hammersmith Hospital. Can live-in care be ready for the day he comes home?

Tell us as soon as a discharge date is mentioned, and we will arrange the assessment around the ward. We will confirm a start date once we have matched a carer, and we will not promise one before that.

I live in Acton and still help my mother every day. Will a live-in carer push me out?

No. The care plan records what you want to keep doing and what the carer takes on. The Ealing Carers Hub can also advise you on your own needs as a carer.
