Live-in Care in Greenford

Live-in care in UB6 for people who want to stay in the semi they have lived in for years, including couples who want to stay together and people coming home from Ealing Hospital or Northwick Park.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Greenford. A carer moves in, uses the spare bedroom and supports the person, or both partners in a couple, with personal care, cooking, medication, the house and getting out. Greenford is a long way from our Lewisham office, which is why live-in care is how we usually cover it: once the carer is in, the distance stops mattering. A free home assessment and a written care plan come first.

When needs outgrow the day centre on Oldfield Lane South

Age UK Ealing is based in Greenford, at Greenford Community Centre on Oldfield Lane South, and its Wellbeing Day Centre runs there twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. It is meant for people with low needs, so anyone who now needs help with washing or the toilet, or who no longer walks reasonably well, is unlikely to qualify. That leaves a gap: the day out stops at the moment the help at home needs to grow.

A live-in carer can cover both sides of that gap. At home they take on the personal care. Out of the house they can keep some of the shape the day centre gave the week: a regular walk in Ravenor Park, a coffee on Greenford Broadway, a trip to see friends. Age UK Ealing's information and advice service is still there for the family, at the same address.

Setting up the house for a carer

In most UB6 semis the carer's room is easy to find, so the planning at the assessment is about the next stage. We note which room the carer takes now and which room could take a profiling bed later, so nobody has to move twice. If the only toilet is upstairs, a commode or a downstairs adaptation becomes part of the plan before it is urgent, and Ealing adult social care can arrange an occupational therapy assessment for that. Council flats and newer blocks near the A40 vary more; a one-bedroom flat cannot take a live-in carer, and our home care in Greenford page covers visiting care instead.

Which hospital will discharge be from: Ealing or Northwick Park?

Either. Greenford residents are treated at Ealing Hospital in Southall and at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow; both are run by London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. Whichever ward it is, Greenford is in Ealing, so the social care side goes through Ealing Council.

A spare room makes Greenford one of the easier places to come home to with live-in care, because the carer can be in place from the first night. Phone us when the ward first mentions a date, ask whether an NHS Continuing Healthcare checklist has been completed, and see our hospital discharge page for the steps.

Changeovers are simple here. Away from the station, most Greenford roads have unrestricted parking, so a relief carer who drives can usually park outside. The exception is Zone Q around Greenford station, which operates Monday to Friday from 10am to 11am and 2pm to 3pm only. Carers coming by train arrive on the Central line at Greenford, which is step-free.

Ravenor Park, Horsenden Hill and the carer's break

Every live-in carer has time off each day. Ravenor Park, entered from Oldfield Lane South near the centre of Greenford, has a rose garden, plenty of benches and public toilets just outside the gate. Horsenden Hill, on the northern edge of Greenford, is there for a longer walk. Greenford Library, also on Oldfield Lane South, is community-managed and opens on only a few days a week, so check before going.

The park works for the person too: Ravenor Park has tarmac and compacted hoggin paths with only gentle slopes, so a wheelchair or walking frame can manage a loop with the carer.

How much does live-in care cost in Greenford?

We give a written figure after the free assessment, because cost depends on the help needed and whether the carer supports one person or two. Ealing Council may contribute after assessing needs and finances; when the care is at home, the house the person lives in is left out of the sums. The NHS guide to Continuing Healthcare explains when the NHS pays in full. Our live-in care in Ealing page explains the council route, and live-in care in London covers how the service works.

Greenford live-in care: questions from families

Questions families ask us about Greenford. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum can no longer go to the Age UK day centre because she needs help in the toilet. What replaces it?

A live-in carer can give her that help at home and take her out on the days she used to go, so the week keeps some routine. We build those outings into the care plan.

Greenford is a long way from Lewisham. How do you keep an eye on the placement?

The carer lives in, so the daily care does not depend on the journey. We stay in contact with the carer and the family by phone, plan each changeover ahead, and review the care plan with you when needs change.

Mum was taken to Northwick Park, not Ealing Hospital. Does that change anything?

Not for the care. Both hospitals are run by the same trust, and her social care still comes from Ealing Council because she lives in Greenford. Tell us the ward and the expected date.

Can the carer take my mother to Ravenor Park in her wheelchair?

Yes, if it is in her care plan. The main paths are firm, the slopes are gentle, and there are toilets on Oldfield Lane South by the entrance.
