Live-in Care in Southall
A live-in carer who joins the household in UB1 or UB2, works alongside the family already there, and is close enough to Ealing Hospital that coming home from a ward is a short trip.
Yes, we arrange live-in care in Southall. The carer lives in the home and helps the person with washing, dressing, meals, medication and getting about, while the rest of the family carry on with work and their own lives. Because the carer lives in, the distance from our Lewisham office has no effect on the daily care. We start with a free assessment at home and agree a written care plan with the family before anyone moves in.
Can a live-in carer fit into a busy family home in Southall?
Often, yes, but it takes more planning than in a house where someone lives alone. Multi-generational homes are common in Southall, so the first question is practical: is there a bedroom that can be the carer's alone? Sometimes the answer is a grandchild's room for a few months, or a front room turned into a bedroom for the person being cared for, which frees an upstairs room for the carer. Sharing a room with the person or a family member is not an option.
The second question is who does what. When a relative has done the personal care for years, the care plan should say whether that continues, whether the carer takes over bathing and nights, or whether they share it. Writing it down early avoids friction in the kitchen and the bathroom later.
Coming home to Southall from Ealing Hospital
Ealing Hospital stands on the Uxbridge Road where Southall meets Hanwell, so for many families the ward is a few minutes away. That makes a live-in discharge easier to set up: relatives can be at the bedside for the discharge conversation and back home in time to meet us for the assessment. West Southall families may be at Hillingdon Hospital instead.
Live-in care suits a discharge in a full household because the family are often at work or school during the day, exactly when someone newly home needs help to the toilet, with tablets and with meals. Ask the ward early about a commode, bed rails or a hospital bed, and decide which room it will go in, since that may also decide where the carer sleeps. Our hospital discharge page covers the rest.
Living inside a family's routine. A live-in carer shares the kitchen, the hallway and the daily rhythm of the whole household, not only the person they support. Write down the things a newcomer would not guess: shoes off at the door, which pans are kept for what, when the household prays, and which days the person goes to the Sri Guru Singh Sabha gurdwara on Havelock Road, so the carer can go with them. We will try to match a carer to the household. We do not promise a carer who speaks Punjabi or Hindi.
Changeovers and parking in UB1 and UB2
Southall station reopened in 2021 with lifts to every platform, so an incoming carer on the Elizabeth line can bring a week's luggage without carrying it up a footbridge. A carer coming from the west can also use the SL8 Superloop bus along the Uxbridge Road.
Parking is the harder part. Southall's controlled zones run for long hours. Zone L, covering roads such as Lady Margaret Road and Beaconsfield Road, operates Monday to Saturday from 10am to 8pm and on Sunday afternoons from 2pm. Zone V, which includes Havelock Road and King Street, runs Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 6pm and Sunday from 2pm. A carer who drives to a changeover will almost always need a visitor session, which the resident buys through PayByPhone. Many carers come by train instead.
A daily break for the carer, and outings for the person
Every live-in carer has a break each day. In Southall they can step out to Southall Park off the Uxbridge Road, the grounds of the Elizabethan Manor House in the town centre, or the library at the Dominion Centre on The Green, which opens on Sunday afternoons as well as through the week and has a lift. A relative at home can usually cover the break, which is one advantage of a full house.
For the person, the gurdwara, the Broadway shops and family visits are often what matters. Southall Day Centre on Shackleton Road, listed on Ealing Council's dementia support page, can give the person a regular few hours out and the carer a natural time for their break.
If there is no room to spare
Sometimes every room in the house is spoken for and there is no way to free one. Live-in care cannot work without a separate bedroom, so we will tell you and talk through alternatives. Our home care in Southall page covers visits, which depend on having a carer free at your times. Respite care can cover a shorter gap, for example while a room is being cleared or a grandchild is away. For longer-term needs, our nearest supported living home is in Uxbridge, along the Uxbridge Road.
Funding
We give a written quote after the assessment. In a shared family home, one point often worries people: Ealing Council's financial assessment looks at the income and savings of the person who needs care, not at the earnings of the sons, daughters or grandchildren they live with. Where needs are mainly health needs, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. The detail is on our live-in care in Ealing page; the service itself is explained on live-in care in London.

Southall families ask
Questions families ask us about Southall. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionEveryone in the house is out at work or school during the day. Will the carer be there then?
Yes. That is much of the point of live-in care in a busy household: the carer is at home through the day whoever else is out. Their daily break is agreed in the care plan, and it is often easiest to time it for when a relative is back.
Can the carer eat with the family?
That is for the household to decide. Some families share meals; others prefer the carer to cook for the person and eat separately. Agree it at the assessment so everyone knows from the first day.
Nani is in Ealing Hospital and we live five minutes away. How quickly can you meet us?
Call as soon as discharge is mentioned and we will arrange the assessment around visiting times. We confirm a start date only once we have a carer matched.
We live on a Zone L street. Who pays for the carer's parking at changeover?
Visitor sessions are bought by the resident through PayByPhone. Many carers travel by Elizabeth line, in which case it does not arise.
