Live-in Care in Perivale, UB6
For couples and single people in the 1930s semis around Horsenden Lane South and the Medway Estate: one carer living in, a room set aside for them, and a house arranged so both of you can stay in it.
Yes, we provide live-in care in Perivale, and the housing here suits it well. A carer moves in to a spare bedroom and helps with personal care, meals, medication and getting out, for one person or for a couple. Perivale is a long way from our Lewisham office, but a live-in carer makes that journey once per placement, not several times a day. We start with a free assessment in the house and agree a written care plan before anyone moves in.
Two people, one carer
In a Perivale semi shared by a couple, when one partner starts to need a lot of help, the other often becomes the carer by default, at an age when lifting, broken nights and constant watchfulness are hard to sustain. A live-in carer takes the physical side of that work: washing and dressing the partner who needs it, managing medication, cooking for both, doing the shopping and the laundry. The other partner goes back to being a husband or wife.
The care plan says who needs what. One partner may need full personal care while the other only wants help with meals and a hand on the stairs. If both of you need two people to move you safely, one carer is not enough, and we will tell you that at the assessment.
Arranging a 1930s semi around care
A 1930s semi here typically has two or three bedrooms and the bathroom upstairs, with the reception rooms below. For a couple with a live-in carer, the rooms tend to divide like this:
- The carer's room. The second or third bedroom becomes theirs. Even the small box room over the front door can work if it takes a single bed and somewhere to store clothes.
- The couple's room. If one partner can no longer manage the stairs, the front room can become a bedroom, and a couple can sleep downstairs together. A stairlift on a straight 1930s staircase is another option.
- The bathroom. With two people needing it and the carer too, one upstairs bathroom is usually the pinch point. An occupational therapist from Ealing adult social care can advise on rails, a bath board or a downstairs shower, and the council's paying for your care page explains which equipment and minor adaptations it does not charge for.
Perivale also has some purpose-built maisonettes. A two-bedroom maisonette can work; a one-bedroom one cannot, because the carer needs their own room. In that case our home care in Perivale page explains how visiting care works here, which depends on carer availability.
Where can a live-in carer park in Perivale?
On most streets, outside the house. Much of Perivale is free to park in. The exceptions are the streets near the station in Zone P, controlled for two short spells on weekdays (9am to 10am and 2pm to 3pm), and the separate Zone PL around Perivale Lane, with its own short windows. Unless a car is left in a resident bay during those hours, a carer who drives for a changeover rarely needs a permit. Carers who come by Tube use Perivale station on the Central line; Hanger Lane, one stop east, is the alternative.
When one of you goes into hospital. If a husband or wife who has been the main carer is admitted to Ealing Hospital or Northwick Park, the partner at home can be left without help overnight. A live-in carer can start at home before the hospital patient is discharged, look after the partner who stayed behind, and then be settled in when the other comes home. Ring us as soon as an admission happens, and see our hospital discharge support page.
The carer's break between Horsenden Hill and Perivale Park
A live-in carer is entitled to a proper break every day. In Perivale they have green space on both sides of Western Avenue: the slopes and woods of Horsenden Hill to the north, and Perivale Park by the River Brent to the south. Perivale Community Library on Horsenden Lane South is community-run, so check its website for opening times. For a couple, the break is often easier to cover than for someone living alone, if the more able partner is comfortable being in charge for a couple of hours; otherwise a family member, a friend or a planned outing covers it. We write the arrangement into the care plan so nobody is guessing.
Paying for live-in care for a couple
Ealing Council assesses each partner's needs and finances separately; joint savings are usually treated as half each. Where one partner has mainly health needs, they may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare, which can pay for their share of the care; the NHS guide explains how to ask for an assessment. Our live-in care in Ealing page covers the council route, direct payments and the care-home comparison, and our London live-in care page explains the daily routine. We quote in writing after the free assessment, and the quote reflects whether it is one person or two.

Live-in care in Perivale: what couples ask
Questions families ask us about Perivale. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy wife needs a lot of help and I need a little. Will the carer help me as well?
Yes, if it is in the care plan. A typical plan covers full personal care for one partner and help with meals, housework or the stairs for the other. We write down exactly what each of you needs, so the carer knows.
We want to move our bed into the front room. Where does the carer sleep then?
Upstairs, in one of the bedrooms you have freed up. Having the front room as your bedroom and the carer upstairs gives everyone privacy. We talk about baby monitors or a call bell at the assessment, so the carer hears if you need them.
I'm going into Northwick Park for an operation. Can a carer look after my husband while I'm away?
Yes. A live-in carer can move in before your admission, care for your husband while you are in hospital, and stay on to help you both when you come home, if you want that. Give us as much notice of the date as you can.
Is a couple charged twice for one live-in carer?
No. You have one carer, and the quote reflects the care both of you need. We give it in writing after the assessment. The council's financial assessment, if you go that route, looks at each of you separately.
If my husband needs a hospital bed in the front room, can I still sleep beside him?
Sometimes. A profiling bed takes about the space of a single bed, so it depends on whether the room also fits a bed for you and space to work around his. We measure the room at the assessment, and if it will not fit, the carer stays within call of both of you.
