Supported Living for Ealing Residents
We don't have a supported living home in Ealing. Our three homes are in Uxbridge, Whitton and Kingston upon Thames, and an Ealing resident can live in one permanently or come for a respite stay once their Ealing social worker agrees the placement. For most of the borough Uxbridge is the closest, at the far end of the Uxbridge Road from Southall and Hanwell.
How does someone in Ealing get supported living?
Through Ealing adult social care, after a Care Act assessment. The council's adult social care page lists "deciding on where you live and who you live with" as one possible outcome of that assessment. Which door you go through first depends on where the person is now.
Not yet known to social care
Start with the Social Care Advice and Referral Centre on 020 8825 8000, or use the self-referral or representative forms on the council's contacting adult social care page. The centre does an initial assessment and, if it's needed, refers on for a full social care assessment.
Young people supported by ESCAN
Disabled children in Ealing are supported by ESCAN, the Ealing Service for Children with Additional Needs. The council says the move to adult social care is discussed with the young person as they approach adulthood. If they might want to leave the family home at 18 or 19, say so early, so the adult social worker hears about it before the handover.
Adults with a learning disability
Ealing has a joint Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities, which brings council social workers together with Ealing Community Partners health staff (West London NHS Trust leads that partnership). If your relative already has a worker in that team, that's who to ask about supported living and about any placement outside the borough.
Mental health needs
The council runs its own supported housing for tenants using mental health or adult social care services: Soan House in Northfields and Shipley House and Joye House on Newburgh Road in Acton. All three are self-contained studios, and the council's supported housing page notes none of them has a lift. Referrals go to the council's Specialist Support Team by email. Someone who needs step-free access or more support may be placed elsewhere.
Ealing also runs Ealing Shared Lives, where an adult with a learning disability lives with a carer in the carer's own home, long-term or for short breaks.
Getting from Ealing to our homes
Ealing's good east-west links help here. Rough journey times, which vary with the time of day:
- Uxbridge from Acton or Ealing Common: the Piccadilly line's Uxbridge branch runs from Acton Town and Ealing Common, about 30 to 40 minutes without changing.
- Uxbridge from Southall, Hanwell or Northolt: 20 to 30 minutes by car. By bus, the Superloop SL8 runs along the Uxbridge Road through Ealing, Hanwell and Southall to Uxbridge.
- Whitton from South Ealing or Northfields: around 35 to 45 minutes via Hounslow. For families in the south of the borough it can be as convenient as Uxbridge.
- Kingston upon Thames: the 65 bus goes direct from Ealing Broadway, but it's a long ride. Kingston only really makes sense if family live south of the river.
Moving to Uxbridge or Whitton doesn't hand the person over to another council. When Ealing arranges supported living in another area, Ealing normally stays responsible for their care and reviews under section 39 of the Care Act. Chapter 19 of the Care and Support Statutory Guidance sets out the rules.
How much does supported living cost for an Ealing resident?
The rent and the support are paid for separately. Rent is often covered by Housing Benefit. The support is assessed by Ealing Council, which then carries out a financial assessment to work out what the person pays. Ealing's paying for care page explains the steps: it counts benefits such as the care part of PIP, leaves a personal allowance and housing costs, and treats savings above £14,250 as producing tariff income. Above the £23,250 upper limit set out on the council's main paying for your care page, the council gives no financial help. People whose needs are mainly health needs may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare. We quote only after meeting the person and assessing what support they need.
The tenancy and the care are two agreements
In supported living the person holds a tenancy or licence for their room or flat. Their care sits in a separate support plan, delivered by a provider registered with the CQC for personal care. In principle that means they could change support provider without losing their home.
JNP Sidona is CQC-registered for personal care. We haven't been inspected yet, so we have no rating. Details of each home are on our supported living page.
Questions to put to any provider, including us
- Who is the landlord, and what document will the person sign?
- Is the home step-free, and is there a downstairs bedroom or a lift if one is needed?
- How is the home staffed overnight?
- Who else lives there, and does the person have a say about new housemates?
- Has the Ealing social worker agreed the placement, and who will review it?
- How will staff help the person keep up their life in Ealing, such as a gurdwara in Southall, a day centre or family visits?

Ealing FAQs
Ealing families ask
Questions families ask us about Ealing. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy daughter is at the Cowgate Centre. Could she keep going after moving to Uxbridge?
Possibly. Places at Ealing's council day centres are agreed through the person's support plan, so ask her social worker whether that can continue after the move, and how she would travel. Tell us the days she goes and we can talk about what support getting there would take.
We were told Soan House has no lift. Do your homes?
Each home is laid out differently, so call us and describe what the person needs: stairs, a wheelchair, a ground-floor room or bathing equipment. We'll tell you plainly whether a home can meet it.
Will my son need to move from his Ealing GP?
After a permanent move, usually yes, because GP practices register people who live in their area. That also means community health services shift: Ealing Community Partners serves people with an Ealing GP. His Ealing social worker normally stays involved for reviews.
Can someone from Ealing come for a respite stay first?
Yes, if a room is free at the time. All three homes take respite stays. If you're the family carer, ask for a carer's assessment too; the Ealing Carers Hub in Acton can help you prepare. See our respite care page.
