Live-in Care in St Helier, Sutton

A carer who lives in your St Helier cottage, sleeps in the second bedroom and is there day and night, with the hospital at the end of the road and Rosehill Park across the roundabout.

Yes, we provide live-in care across the Sutton side of the St Helier estate, from the Wrythe up to Rosehill. One carer moves into the house with a bedroom of their own and supports the person, or a couple, with personal care, medicines, meals and company through the day and night. We start with a free assessment in the home, where we look hard at the bedrooms and the stairs, because on this estate they decide most of what follows.

Does a St Helier cottage have room for a live-in carer?

Often, but measure first. The estate's two-storey brick cottages, many now privately owned and some still council homes, have small bedrooms. A second bedroom that takes a single bed, a chest of drawers and somewhere to hang clothes works for a carer; a narrow box room over the stairs is a harder ask for months at a time.

  • One person living alone: usually straightforward. The carer takes the second room.
  • A couple who now sleep in separate rooms: in a two-bedroom cottage this leaves nowhere for the carer, so the front room often becomes a downstairs bedroom for one of you.
  • A one-bedroom flat or bungalow: live-in care is not possible without a room for the carer. Visiting care or Sutton's Housing with Care flats for over-55s are the alternatives.

Stairs, hoists and the downstairs front room

The staircases are narrow and in many cottages the only bathroom is upstairs, which a live-in carer meets every morning and night. Where the stairs are no longer safe, the usual answer is a profiling bed in the front room, a commode, and a downstairs shower if one can be fitted. The person stays on one level and the carer keeps the upstairs room.

A mobile hoist needs floor space around the bed, which an upstairs St Helier bedroom rarely has, so if a hoist is likely we plan it for the ground floor from the start. Stairlifts are possible, though a turning stair needs a curved rail. Tenants should ask their landlord before any adaptation. The care plan records how each transfer is done with the equipment provided.

Changeover day. The incoming carer arrives with a suitcase and overlaps with the outgoing one for a handover. St Helier station on Thameslink's Sutton loop is inside the estate, Morden station at the end of the Northern line is just over the Merton boundary, the 80, 151 and S1 buses stop on Green Wrythe Lane, and the 157 runs past the hospital on Wrythe Lane. St Helier is outside Sutton's controlled parking zones, but the council's SH1, SH2 and SH3 permit parking areas (the Westminster Road, Thornton Road and Stavordale Road areas) run on weekdays from 8am to 6pm. Inside them, a carer's car needs a visitor voucher during those hours; on other estate roads a carer can usually park outside or nearby.

Where the carer takes their break

A live-in carer has a protected break every day, and in St Helier there are good places to spend it within a short walk. Rose Hill Park East and West lie either side of Rose Hill by the roundabout, with a café, a bowling green and toilets, and St Helier Open Space is on Wrythe Lane by the hospital.

The Circle Library on Green Wrythe Lane is somewhere the carer can also take the person, and a carer can go with someone to services at their own church. For dementia, Age UK Sutton's Dementia Hub runs dementia cafes and peer groups across the borough.

Coming home to St Helier with the carer already there

St Helier Hospital is on Wrythe Lane, on the estate's southern edge, so the journey home is short. The harder part is the first night back, in a house whose stairs were manageable before the admission. A live-in carer can be there for it, with the bed moved downstairs if needed.

Because the estate straddles the borough boundary, the follow-up after discharge depends on which council and GP the person comes under. On the Sutton side, community nursing and therapy come from Sutton Health and Care, and the ward may refer to the council's START reablement team; on the Merton side, ask the ward who will follow up. A live-in carer works the same either way, so tell us the address and the discharge plan once a date is being discussed. More on our hospital discharge support page.

Two people in one cottage

One live-in carer can support a husband and wife, or two siblings, sharing the house, with one plan setting out each person's needs. In a two-bedroom cottage, settle the room question above first.

How do you pay for live-in care in St Helier?

We don't publish prices. After the free assessment we give you a written quote. If you are on the Sutton side of the estate, Sutton Adult Social Care does the needs and financial assessments; our live-in care in Sutton page explains that route. The northern part of the estate, towards Morden, is in Merton, which runs its own process; your council tax bill shows which council you are with. Where needs are mainly health needs, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare, assessed in this area under NHS South West London Integrated Care Board. Live-in care in St Helier: your questions

Questions families ask us about St Helier. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad's bathroom is upstairs and he can't manage the stairs any more. Can he still have live-in care?

Yes. The bed can move into the front room with a commode, or a downstairs shower if the occupational therapist recommends one. We plan the layout with you at the assessment.

Where does the live-in carer go during their daily break?

Usually out of the house: Rosehill Park, St Helier Open Space, the Circle Library or the shops at Rosehill are all close. If your relative can't be left alone, we agree in advance who sits with them during that time.

Mum's cottage is on the Merton side of the estate. Can you still help?

Yes. Live-in care works the same on either side of the boundary, and we cover Merton too. The difference is the council: any needs assessment or funding goes through Merton, and our live-in care in Merton page explains that route.

Will a car be a problem on changeover day?

Usually not, but check the address first. Streets in the SH1, SH2 and SH3 permit areas need a visitor voucher on weekdays between 8am and 6pm, so a changeover there is easiest after 6pm or at the weekend. Elsewhere on the estate a car can normally park on the street.

We live in a one-bedroom council flat. What are the options?

Without a spare room a carer can't live in, so we would talk about visiting care, depending on availability, or about Sutton's Housing with Care flats, which come through a council assessment.
