Supported Living for Sutton Residents
Yes, an adult from Sutton can live in one of our supported living homes, permanently or for a short respite stay. None of them is in the borough: they are in Kingston upon Thames, Whitton and Uxbridge. Kingston is the nearest, roughly 25 to 35 minutes by car from Sutton town centre through Worcester Park and New Malden. If Sutton Council is funding the support, the move is agreed through the person's social worker.
Sutton already places many adults outside the borough
Sutton Council publishes a picture of its local supported living market. It counts 46 services with 254 beds from 21 suppliers. Most places are for adults whose main need is a learning disability. The council says it prefers to place people inside Sutton where it can, but 29.4% of its adult placements are out of borough. For 18 to 25 year olds the figure is 65.5%, which the council itself reads as a shortage of local provision for young adults.
So if you are the parent of a young adult in Sutton, a home in Kingston is not a strange suggestion: it is a route the council already uses. The council also says it only commissions supported living from CQC-registered providers, even where no personal care is needed. JNP Sidona is registered with the CQC but has not yet been inspected, so we have no rating to show you.
How do you get supported living through Sutton Council?
Everything starts with a Care Act needs assessment from Sutton Adult Social Care. You can request one through the council's online care needs checklist or by calling the Contact Centre on 020 8770 5000 (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday). If the person already has a social worker, go straight to them. After that, the route depends on who is being supported.
Adults with a learning disability
The council's Learning Disabilities team handles assessment and advice on housing, health and benefits. Call 020 8770 6291, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Young people leaving children's services
Children's social care supports young people up to 18. Sutton's preparing for adulthood work typically starts around age 14 and looks ahead to college, work and independent living. If living away from home is the aim, say so at the Year 9 review and every review after it, so it is written into the plan before adult social care takes over.
Adults with mental health needs
Sutton runs its own Mental Health Support Service, a 24-hour staffed shared house for eleven adults, intended as rehabilitation for up to two years. Referrals go from Adult Social Care through Encompass's Supported Housing Pathway. A longer-term placement elsewhere is a separate decision led by the social worker.
From Sutton to our three homes
- Kingston upon Thames: the nearest by a distance. The 213 bus runs between Sutton and Kingston (about 45 to 60 minutes), or take the train with a change at Wimbledon. From Worcester Park and North Cheam it is a short drive.
- Whitton, near Twickenham: around 45 to 60 minutes by car.
- Uxbridge: well over an hour away, so it suits families with links to west London.
Families in Wallington, Beddington and Hackbridge are on the far side of the borough from Kingston. If you don't drive, allow more than an hour each way and try the journey before you agree to anything.
Moving to Kingston normally keeps Sutton responsible. When a council arranges supported living in another borough, the Care Act's ordinary residence rules usually leave that council paying for and reviewing the support. Ask the social worker to confirm this in writing before the move.
Rent on one side, support on the other
In supported living the person holds a tenancy and has a tenant's rights. The support is a separate agreement under a care plan, delivered by a provider registered with the CQC for personal care. That separation is the main difference from a care home. In principle, the support provider can change without the person losing their home. Ask for a copy of the tenancy before anyone signs.
Funding follows the same split. Rent is usually met with help from housing benefit. Sutton funds the support once eligible needs are confirmed, and a financial assessment decides whether the person contributes, which can be a new cost for a young person leaving free children's services. A direct payment is an option, and NHS Continuing Healthcare may pay where needs are primarily health needs. We don't publish prices. We quote after meeting the person, and our paying for care guide explains the routes.
What to ask any provider, us included
- What is your CQC rating? (Ours: not yet inspected.)
- Who else lives in the house, and can we meet them first?
- How are nights and weekends covered?
- Will staff help with trips back to Sutton for family, college or a regular group?
- Which GP will the person join, and how will health records and annual health checks move across?

Sutton FAQs
Sutton families ask
Questions families ask us about Sutton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionOur daughter is 19 and Sutton has suggested a placement outside the borough. Is that unusual?
No. The council's own figures show that 65.5% of its supported living placements for 18 to 25 year olds are outside Sutton. Ask the social worker why a particular home is being suggested and whether anything local was considered.
We live in Wallington and don't drive. How hard is it to visit Kingston?
It is doable but slow. A train or bus into Sutton and then the 213 to Kingston can take well over an hour each way. Do the trip once before deciding, and agree a visiting pattern with the social worker.
Would Sutton's Learning Disabilities team still be involved after a move?
Usually Sutton stays responsible for funding and reviews. Health care can change once the person registers with a GP near the new home, so ask before the move how specialist health support will be handed over.
Does Sutton Council need to agree before someone moves into one of your homes?
If the council is funding the support, yes. The placement is agreed through the social worker after the needs assessment. If someone is paying privately, the decision is theirs, but call us first so we can talk through needs and availability.
Can someone from Sutton try a short stay first?
Yes, if a room is free. Our homes take respite stays as well as permanent residents, and a short stay is a fair test of whether the distance from Sutton works for the whole family.
