Live-in Care in Stoke Newington

A carer who lives in, for someone who wants to keep their N16 flat or house, their walk to Church Street and the neighbours they have known for years.

Yes, we arrange live-in care across Stoke Newington, N16. One carer lives in, with a bedroom of their own, and helps with washing, dressing, meals and medicines through the day. They travel in once at the start of a placement, so the hour-long trip from our Lewisham office matters far less than it does for visits. Everything starts with a free assessment at the home.

Does a converted N16 flat have room for a live-in carer?

In Stoke Newington the first question is the room, more than the care itself. Most of the period streets between Albion Road, Church Street and the High Street were divided into flats long ago. A ground-floor flat in one of these houses might have two bedrooms where the old front parlour has become one; an upper flat often has one bedroom and a box room under the eaves.

A box room can work if it takes a single bed, has a window and a door that shuts, and gives the carer somewhere to keep their clothes. A sofa bed in the living room cannot. At the assessment we look at the room with you and say plainly whether it will do.

With no second bedroom, the realistic options are visits (see home care in Stoke Newington), live-in care at a relative's home that has a spare room, or a move.

Steep stairs, small bathrooms and getting equipment in

A live-in carer makes stairs safer because someone is there every time they are used, but they cannot carry anyone up a flight. If a person can no longer manage the stairs to an upper flat, the care plan has to start from that fact. Stairlifts do not fit every narrow terrace staircase, and a hospital bed or mobile hoist has to come up the same stairs and fit in a bedroom that may already have to hold the bed and a wardrobe.

Equipment normally comes through an occupational therapist. If a hoist would need two people to use it safely, a single live-in carer is not enough, and we will tell you.

Estate flats towards Woodberry Down raise a different question. A two-bedroom estate flat is often easier for live-in care than a converted house, provided the lift works. Ask yourselves what happens on the days it doesn't, because a carer can bring shopping up the stairs but the person may be stuck indoors.

Carer handovers: the Overground, the 73 and zones E and M

When one carer finishes a placement and the next arrives, both are travelling with luggage. Stoke Newington has no Tube, so changeovers mostly happen by Overground into Stoke Newington or Rectory Road station on the Weaver line from Liverpool Street, or on the 73 bus from King's Cross. For an address near Woodberry Down, Manor House on the Piccadilly line is closer.

If a carer or a relative drives, check the parking zone first. Hackney's parking zones page lists the hours: zone E (Stoke Newington) is controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and at least on Saturday mornings, with some streets controlled all day Saturday; zone M (Clissold) keeps weekday and Saturday-morning hours but runs later on Emirates Stadium event days. Residents can buy visitor e-vouchers or scratchcards from the council (estates have their own), so get some before the first changeover.

Where the carer goes on their break

The carer's daily break is protected time off, and N16 has good places to spend it. Abney Park, between Church Street and the High Street, now has a café, public toilets and a new accessible entrance on Church Street after its restoration. Clissold Park is a few minutes away, and Woodberry Wetlands, run by the London Wildlife Trust, sits beside the reservoirs to the north.

Stoke Newington Library on Church Street is closed for refurbishment at the time of writing. If the person cannot be left alone during the break, we agree cover from family, a friend or a day centre at the assessment.

Leswin Road, food and familiar company

The Hackney Caribbean Elderly Organisation at 39 Leswin Road has run its day centre and lunch club since 1985. A live-in carer can help someone keep going there, getting them ready and seeing them to the door, and the day centre hours can double as a safe window for the carer's own time off. Tell us how meals have always been cooked and what church or social life fills the week, and it goes into the care plan.

Coming home from Homerton

Homerton University Hospital is where most N16 patients come home from. A converted flat with stairs is often the sticking point for a discharge, because the ward's therapists need to know the person can manage them. Tell the ward early that a carer will be living in, and phone us while the date is still being discussed. More on discharge support.

Live-in care in Stoke Newington: questions

Questions families ask us about Stoke Newington. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum's flat above a shop on Church Street has one bedroom and a tiny study. Is that enough?

Possibly, if the study takes a single bed and has a window and a door. We look at it during the free assessment and will say if it is too small.

Dad is in a tower near Woodberry Down and the lift breaks down now and then. Is live-in care still sensible?

Often it is more sensible, because someone is in the flat when the lift is out. The carer can fetch shopping and prescriptions up the stairs. Report lift faults to the landlord, and tell us at the assessment if Dad has hospital appointments that a broken lift would make him miss.

Can the carer take Aunt June to the Leswin Road lunch club?

Yes. We write her days there into the care plan, and the carer gets her ready and walks or travels with her. Check with the day centre about places and any charges.

We live in a zone E street. Do we need to buy parking for the carer?

Only if someone drives in. Most carers arrive by Overground or bus. If a relative will drive a carer to a changeover, buy visitor e-vouchers from Hackney Council beforehand, because zone E is controlled through the working day and on Saturdays, all day on some streets.
