Live-in Care in De Beauvoir Town

A carer who lives with you in N1, for a single person or a couple, in a split villa off De Beauvoir Square, a maisonette on the estate or a flat by Kingsland Basin.

Yes, we can arrange live-in care in De Beauvoir Town. One of our carers moves into a spare bedroom in the home and supports the person, or both partners, through the day and is there at night, following a care plan written after a free assessment visit. Because the carer stays, the trip across from Lewisham is made at changeovers, not every day, and has no bearing on the care.

Which De Beauvoir homes have room for a carer?

The spare bedroom is the first thing we look at, and in De Beauvoir the answer depends on the building.

  • The villas around the square. On streets like Northchurch Road and Culford Road, a villa still lived in as one house has rooms to spare. Where it has been divided into flats, check the floor plan: some conversions have a second bedroom, many do not.
  • The De Beauvoir Estate. In the maisonettes and tower flats south of Downham Road, a tenant whose children have moved out may have a second bedroom standing empty. Others are one-bedroom.
  • The canal-side blocks. Newer flats around Kingsland Basin are step-free, and the two-bedroom ones suit live-in care well.

A one-bedroom flat cannot take a live-in carer: they need their own room with a door, not a sofa bed in the lounge. The choices then are visiting care in De Beauvoir Town, a move within the household so a room is freed up, or, if someone needs care around the clock, a conversation with Hackney about other housing.

Stairs in the villas, lifts in the towers

A carer who lives in is there every time the person needs the stairs, not only at call times. The building still decides what is safe. In a villa conversion, any profiling bed or hoist arrives by the shared hallway and stairs, and the bedroom needs space round it for the carer to work. An estate maisonette has its own internal staircase, where an occupational therapist may recommend a stairlift. In the towers, a broken lift means the person stays in, but not alone. We check all of this at the assessment and plan around the equipment actually installed.

Couples who want to stay in N1 together

When one partner starts needing personal care, moving into a care home can mean one of you going alone. One live-in carer can support both at home instead: hands-on help for the partner who needs it, and meals, shopping, laundry and a second pair of eyes for the one who is still largely independent, who may get back their walks round the square and a full night's sleep. We write one care plan covering both and price it after the assessment.

Talk about the household honestly. Tell us who cooks, who likes the radio on and who goes to bed when. A carer living with two people has to fit around both.

Changeover day: Haggerston, Dalston Junction and zone H

At the end of a placement a new carer arrives, usually with a suitcase. The carer will use one of two Windrush line stations on the area's eastern side: Haggerston, on Kingsland Road below the canal, or Dalston Junction, up by Balls Pond Road. Both are step-free, with lifts to the platforms.

If a relative drives over to meet the new carer, zone H covers the area, and its controls run on weekdays only, 8.30am to 6.30pm, according to the council's zone list. Weekends are not controlled. For weekday visits, the resident can buy visitor vouchers without owning a car, in two-hour or one-day books, as e-vouchers sent to the visitor. Residents over 60 or with a Blue Badge get some books at half price.

Where does the carer go on their break?

Every live-in carer has a protected daily break. Here that can be a sit in the gardens of De Beauvoir Square, a walk along the Regent's Canal towpath past Kingsland Basin, or errands on Kingsland Road. Dalston CLR James Library on Dalston Square, a short walk north, is a quiet indoor option with a lift and Sunday afternoon opening.

Outside the break, the carer can take the person to places they already use, such as St Peter's on De Beauvoir Road for Sunday Mass at 10am, or the Marie Lloyd Centre on Queensbridge Road, which runs activities for older people and houses the City & Hackney Carers Centre, useful for a spouse who has been the main carer until now.

Back from Homerton with a carer already in place

The local acute hospital for De Beauvoir is Homerton University Hospital, across the borough in E9. If the person will not manage alone, a live-in carer can be there for the first night back, when a fall or a muddle over new medicines can easily happen. Tell the ward you are arranging live-in care and call us as soon as discharge is mentioned, so we have time to assess and choose a carer. If someone's needs are mainly health needs, ask the ward about NHS Continuing Healthcare.

Fees and funding

Our fee comes as a written quote once the free assessment is done. Council funding through Hackney, the means test and direct payments are set out on our Hackney live-in care page, and the London live-in care page covers rotas, breaks and contracts.

De Beauvoir live-in care: questions families ask

Questions families ask us about De Beauvoir Town. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Only Dad needs care, but Mum lives with him. Is live-in care still the right fit?

Often it is the best fit: the carer helps your father and takes the strain off your mother. The care plan sets out what the carer does for each of them.

The spare room in Mum's villa flat is up a half-landing from her bedroom. Will that work?

It can, if the carer can hear and reach her quickly at night, sometimes with a monitor or call bell. We look at the layout at the assessment and say plainly if it is too far.

Can the new carer park outside on changeover day?

Carers usually come by Overground. If someone is driving, zone H is controlled on weekdays only, so a weekend changeover needs no voucher; on a weekday, the resident can send the driver a visitor e-voucher.

Will the carer take Mum to Mass at St Peter's?

Yes, if it is part of her week. It goes into the care plan, and the carer's break is arranged around it.

His estate flat has only one bedroom. Is there any way to have live-in care?

Not in that flat, unless a room is freed up. Visiting care, with several calls a day, is the usual alternative. If he needs someone there day and night, ask Hackney Adult Social Care about his housing options.
