Live-in Care in Stamford Hill
A carer who lives in and fits around the household: for a parent, or both parents, in a family house or estate flat at the top of Hackney.
We provide live-in care throughout Stamford Hill, and of all our options it is the one that suits this corner of Hackney best. A carer moves in with their own room and supports the person, or a couple, through the day and evening, following a written plan built around the household's routine. Nothing is agreed until Jackie, our registered manager, or someone she has trained has visited the house for a free assessment.
A spare room in a house that is already full
Stamford Hill has many large Victorian and Edwardian houses, which on paper makes live-in care easier. In practice, a big house is often a busy one. Grown children, grandchildren and visiting relatives may already fill the bedrooms, and the room that looks free may be the one kept for guests at Pesach or Sukkot.
It is worth deciding as a family, before the assessment, which room the carer will have all year round. It needs a bed, storage and a door, and it should be close enough to hear the person if they call. On the ground floor of a large house, a front room converted into a bedroom for the person can leave an upstairs room for the carer, which also takes the stairs out of the person's day.
The council blocks around the hill are a separate case: if there is a second bedroom, check the lift and whether a wheelchair fits through the front door and bathroom door.
Can a live-in carer look after both my parents in Stamford Hill?
Yes, if their combined needs are manageable for one person during the day and neither needs regular help through the night. Often one parent needs washing, dressing and help moving about, and the other mainly needs meals, company and someone to steady them on the stairs. One carer in the house keeps them together at home, in the community they belong to, with the shul, the shops on the Broadway and the family's own routines unchanged.
If both need hands-on help at the same moments, for example two people who each need assistance to get up in the morning, one carer cannot do it safely and the plan needs extra support. We assess each partner separately and write one plan for the household.
Changeovers that avoid Shabbat and Yom Tov
Carers on long placements rotate, and a changeover is a half-day of two people arriving, handing over and leaving. In a household that keeps Shabbat, we plan changeovers well away from Friday afternoon and Saturday, and around festivals, so that nobody is arriving with luggage or ringing the doorbell at the wrong time. Tell us the family's calendar at the assessment and we will plan the rota around it.
For the carer travelling in, Stamford Hill station on the Overground Weaver line runs from Liverpool Street. Seven Sisters, just over the Haringey border, is on the Victoria line, which links directly to King's Cross, Euston and Victoria, useful for a carer arriving by mainline train or coach. Driving is easier here than elsewhere in Hackney: the council's parking zones T, W and Y have restrictions between 10am and midday, Monday to Friday, and none at other times, so a Sunday changeover by car is straightforward.
The carer's daily break: Portland Avenue and the Broadway
A live-in carer takes a protected break every day. In a large family someone may well be at home to cover it; if not, we agree the arrangement in advance. Stamford Hill Library on Portland Avenue, N16 6SB, is a quiet place for a carer to spend an hour and is open on Sunday afternoons as well as through the week. The shops and cafés of Stamford Hill Broadway are close by, and Springfield Park, with its views over Walthamstow Marshes, is a walk down the hill.
Books at home. Hackney's Community Library Service, run from Stamford Hill Library, brings books, large print and talking books every month to people who cannot get to a library, including full-time carers, free of charge. Join on 020 8356 5238. It also visits patients at Homerton Hospital and St Joseph's Hospice each week.
After a stay in Homerton
On the Hackney side of the hill, the hospital is usually Homerton. If the address is north of the hill, in Haringey, the hospital and council may be different, so check the council tax bill early. For someone coming home frail after a fall or an operation, a live-in carer means one familiar person handling medication, meals and getting up and down in the first weeks, alongside whatever therapy or reablement the hospital arranges. Call us when discharge is first discussed; see hospital discharge support.
Funding
The cost for one person or a couple is in the written quote that follows the assessment. Whether Hackney Council contributes depends on its own needs and financial assessments, set out on live-in care in Hackney. For complex or deteriorating health conditions, the GP or ward can start an assessment for NHS Continuing Healthcare, which is free to the person when they qualify. If visiting care would suit better, see home care in Stamford Hill, and our London live-in care page covers placements generally.

Stamford Hill live-in care: what families ask
Questions families ask us about Stamford Hill. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionOnly my father needs care, but my mother is in her eighties too. Will the carer help her?
The carer will be cooking, shopping and keeping the house running for both of them, so she benefits day to day. If she needs personal care as well, we assess her too and write it into the plan, so the carer is clear what is expected.
Where does the carer eat in a kosher home?
We agree it with you at the assessment. The carer can eat from the household kitchen under your rules, or bring food in sealed packaging and keep separate utensils if you prefer. Whatever is decided goes into the care plan before the carer arrives.
My sister comes in every afternoon. Can her visit cover the carer's break?
Yes, that can work well. We write the time into the plan so the carer knows when they are off, and agree what happens on days she cannot come.
Can a changeover happen during Chol HaMoed or just before a festival?
We plan around the dates you give us and avoid the days that would be awkward for the household. Give us the festival dates for the year when the placement starts, so the rota can be planned ahead.
