Live-in Care in Enfield Lock
A carer who lives in, for homes between Hertford Road and the River Lee Navigation, from the streets off Ordnance Road to Enfield Island Village, right up at London's northern edge.
Yes, we can provide live-in care in Enfield Lock. A carer moves into the home, with a bedroom of their own, and supports one person or a couple through the day under a written care plan. Jackie, our registered manager, visits first for a free assessment. Enfield Lock is the furthest part of Enfield from our Lewisham office, and live-in care is the way we can cover it well.
How do live-in carers get to Enfield Lock?
The journey matters only at the start of a placement and at each changeover, when one carer hands over to the next. Most carers come by train.
- Enfield Lock station is on Greater Anglia's West Anglia line from Liverpool Street via Tottenham Hale. National Rail lists both platforms as step-free, with no lifts. The ticket office is staffed only on weekday and Saturday mornings and is closed on Sundays, so a carer leaving on a Sunday afternoon will find no staff there. Check times on the National Rail station page.
- Turkey Street, on the Overground Weaver line's Cheshunt branch, is the alternative for homes on the western side, towards Hertford Road.
- Brimsdown, one stop south on the West Anglia line, suits the southern streets.
We plan each changeover with you in advance, tell you who is coming and introduce the new carer. Because of the distance, a changeover here takes some planning around train times, and we build that in.
Houses with room to spare
A lot of the housing in Enfield Lock is houses, not flats, which helps when you need to fit a carer in:
- Victorian terraces around Ordnance Road, Medcalf Road and Salisbury Road, where a back bedroom can be set up as the carer's room.
- Interwar and post-war council houses towards Hertford Road, many with three bedrooms. Tenants should tell the landlord that a carer will be living in as part of their job.
- Enfield Island Village, built on the old Royal Small Arms Factory site, with newer houses and flats. Count the bedrooms in the flats before planning live-in care.
Two-storey houses mean stairs. A downstairs bedroom, a stairlift or a commode at night are the usual answers, and an occupational therapist from Enfield Adult Social Care can advise before you buy anything.
A break by the river
Enfield Lock gives a live-in carer some good places to spend a daily break. Rammey Marsh, in the Lee Valley Regional Park, has a car park on Ordnance Road, free to use at the time of writing, and a one-mile circular walk on grass paths, with the River Lee Navigation alongside on the way back. Across the river, on Sewardstone Road on the Essex side, Gunpowder Park has surfaced paths, seating, accessible parking and an accessible toilet, which make it better for a wheelchair outing with the person than the grassy marsh.
On wet days, the Ordnance Unity Centre Library on Hertford Road stayed open after the 2025 cuts and now opens on Wednesdays too. Enfield Island Village library was among the seven Enfield closed in July 2025.
Home from hospital, far from family. Emergency admissions from Enfield Lock usually go to North Middlesex University Hospital in Edmonton. For relatives who live elsewhere in London, the trip up here takes time, and that is often what makes the first nights home hard. With a live-in carer in place from the day of discharge, someone is there even when the family cannot be. See our hospital discharge support.
Funding and other options
For council funding, our Enfield live-in care page walks through the needs assessment, the means test and direct payments; for how changeovers and the carer's time off are organised, see live-in care in London. Visiting care is rarely possible this far from Lewisham; home care in Enfield Lock explains why. We quote in writing after the free assessment.

Live-in care in Enfield Lock: questions
Questions families ask us about Enfield Lock. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionWhat happens at a changeover if the trains from Liverpool Street are disrupted?
If the West Anglia line is disrupted, the incoming carer can take the Overground to Turkey Street instead. We keep you informed on the day and agree with you how the person is covered until the new carer arrives.
Dad used to walk the towpath every day. Can his carer still take him?
Yes, if it is safe for him and written into the care plan. If he now uses a wheelchair, the surfaced paths at Gunpowder Park are easier than the grass at Rammey Marsh.
Mum's house in Enfield Island Village has two bedrooms. Is that enough?
Yes, if the second bedroom becomes the carer's room. It can be small, but it needs a bed, storage and a door that closes.
None of us lives nearby. How will we know how things are going?
Agree with us at the assessment how and how often you want updates, from the carer or from Jackie, and we will write that into the care plan. You are welcome to visit at any time.
Is it worth arranging dementia support this far out?
Yes. The GP can refer to the Enfield Memory Service at Chase Farm, and a live-in carer can keep up the routine and activities it recommends. Read more about our dementia care.
