Live-in Care in Winchmore Hill

Someone in the house all day once the stairs, the bath and the front steps have become hard work, in the family homes around the Green, Grange Park and Highlands Village.

Yes, we arrange live-in care in Winchmore Hill, N21. Jackie, our registered manager, visits first for a free assessment and writes the care plan with you; then a carer moves into the spare room and is on hand through the day. Winchmore Hill is a long way from our Lewisham office and has no Tube, but a live-in carer makes the journey only at the start of a placement, so neither matters for the care.

What does live-in care look like in a Winchmore Hill house?

Most homes in N21 are Edwardian or interwar houses on two floors, often with a flight of steps to the front door and the only bathroom upstairs. Space for the carer is rarely the problem: a house like this almost always has a bedroom free. The challenge is the house itself, as someone becomes less steady. A live-in carer is there for every trip up and down the stairs, every bath and every time the doorbell goes, which is when falls tend to happen.

In a house like this, the carer's day is likely to revolve around moving safely between floors, getting washed in an upstairs bathroom built for a bath, and keeping the person going out, to the Green or into the garden, so that they do not stop leaving the house altogether.

Stairlift, hoist or a bed downstairs?

The care can start before any of these are in place. At the assessment we look at how your relative manages now and set out safe arrangements in the plan. After that, the options usually come in this order:

  • Rails and a second banister on the stairs and at the front steps, which are quick to fit.
  • A stairlift. Whether one fits is a question for the supplier or an occupational therapist, and a carer still needs to help on and off at the top and bottom.
  • A level-access shower or bath lift in the upstairs bathroom. Enfield Council's occupational therapists assess for adaptations.
  • A bedroom in the front room downstairs, with a commode or a downstairs toilet, if the stairs become unsafe altogether.
  • A hoist, if someone can no longer stand to transfer. A mobile hoist needs floor space around the bed, which the larger rooms in these houses usually have. If two people are needed for every hoist transfer, one live-in carer is not enough, and we will say so.

If visits rather than live-in care would cover what is needed, see our home care in Winchmore Hill page.

Carers come by train, not Tube

Winchmore Hill and Grange Park are on Great Northern's Hertford Loop, with trains from Moorgate on weekdays and from King's Cross at weekends. A carer starting a placement or covering a holiday changes in the City and has a short walk from either station. We introduce any replacement before the changeover so your relative is not opening the door to someone new.

Much of N21 is uncontrolled suburban street parking, though roads near the stations and the Green may have restrictions, so check the signs in your road. On a controlled road, a relative who drives the carer over will need one of the resident's visitor vouchers, sold in books by the council.

The carer's time off. Grovelands Park is on the doorstep for the carer's daily break. Winchmore Hill Library was among the seven Enfield libraries that closed in July 2025, but Ridge Avenue Library in N21 stayed open, as did the council's home library service for people who no longer get out. During the break, a neighbour, a relative or a session at a day centre such as Connections, run by Enfield Carers Centre, can keep your relative company.

After a fall or a hospital stay

For emergencies, most of Winchmore Hill goes to North Middlesex University Hospital in Edmonton. Chase Farm Hospital, up the W9 route, has an urgent treatment centre but no A&E. After a fall, the ward will want to know how the person will manage the house before they come back. A live-in carer, with the stairs planned for, can be part of that answer. Call us early, while the discharge is being planned, and see our hospital discharge support.

Paying for it

Enfield Council assesses needs, then means-tests. For care at home, the house itself is not counted. Our live-in care in Enfield page explains the council route and direct payments, and the NHS guide to Continuing Healthcare covers health-funded care. We quote in writing after our free assessment. Our live-in care in London page explains how breaks, holidays and replacements work.

Winchmore Hill live-in care questions

Questions families ask us about Winchmore Hill. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum still manages the stairs, slowly. Is it too early for live-in care?

Not if she is at risk of falling when nobody is there. A live-in carer can be beside her on the stairs and in the bath now, before a fall happens. We can talk through whether visits would be enough instead.

If we fit a stairlift, does the carer still need to be upstairs at night?

The carer sleeps in their own room, usually upstairs near your relative. If she needs help regularly through the night as well as the day, one live-in carer cannot cover both, and we will explain the options at the assessment.

Dad's bed is moving downstairs. Where does the carer sleep?

In a bedroom upstairs, provided they can hear him. A baby monitor or a simple call bell is often enough. We agree it at the assessment and write it into the plan.

The carer will arrive with a suitcase. How far is it from Winchmore Hill station?

It depends on the street. Most of N21 is within a walk of Winchmore Hill or Grange Park station, and buses run along Green Lanes for the rest. We plan the arrival with the carer, so you do not need to collect them.
