Live-in Care in Palmers Green
A carer who lives in and fits around the household, its food, its faith and its visitors, in the Edwardian houses and conversions between Green Lanes, Aldermans Hill and the New River.
Yes, we can arrange live-in care anywhere in Palmers Green, N13. After a free assessment at home with Jackie, our registered manager, a carer moves into the spare room and supports your relative day to day under a written care plan. The carer travels once, at the start, so it makes no difference that our office is in Lewisham.
A carer who fits the way the house runs
In a live-in arrangement the carer shares the kitchen, the table and the daily rhythm of the home, so the match matters more than it does for a visit. Palmers Green has a long-established Greek Cypriot community, and in some households that means a week shaped by Orthodox fasts, feast days and family meals. Whatever your relative's routine, tell us at the assessment what a normal week looks like:
- which dishes your mother still cooks herself and which she wants help with, and whether she keeps the fasts before Easter and Christmas
- whether she goes to church on Sundays and feast days, and how she gets there
- which family members drop in, how often, and who has a key
- the language she is most comfortable in, especially if dementia is drawing her back to her first language
We write all of it into the care plan and choose the carer with it in mind. We will not promise a carer who speaks a particular language, but we will be honest about who is available and what we can match.
Will a live-in carer fit in a converted house?
It depends which half of the house your relative has. Most of the streets off Green Lanes went up in the Edwardian building boom, and plenty of those houses have since been converted, with one flat on each floor.
A whole house almost always has a room for the carer. A two-bedroom conversion usually works too. A one-bedroom flat, upstairs or down, does not, because the carer needs a private room to sleep in. In that case the realistic choices are visiting care, which depends on whether we can staff it (see home care in Palmers Green), or live-in care for a while somewhere else in the family with a spare room.
In an upper flat, the one staircase is also the only way in and out. A live-in carer can walk beside someone on it but cannot carry them, so if your relative is losing the ability to manage it, the plan has to cover how they get to appointments and how they would leave in an emergency. Raise it with Enfield Council's occupational therapists early.
When both parents are still at home
In a whole Edwardian house there is usually room for one carer to support both partners. A converted flat is tighter: a couple sharing one bedroom with the carer in the second can work, but if they now sleep apart, there is no room left for the carer. We assess them together and write a single plan for the household. If either needs two people for every transfer, or help several times a night, we will say so at the assessment.
Changeovers by train and the W6
Palmers Green station is on the Great Northern line from Moorgate, and Bowes Park serves the southern end of N13, so a carer arriving for a changeover with a suitcase has a short walk to most streets. From the Piccadilly line, the W6 bus runs from Southgate station through Palmers Green.
Parking depends on the street. Some roads near the shops and stations are controlled, but many residential roads have no permit scheme. Enfield consulted in 2024 on a "Palmers Green East" zone between Green Lanes, Hedge Lane, Hazelwood Lane and the New River, and decided not to go ahead. If your road is in a zone, the resident can buy books of visitor vouchers from the council for relatives who drive over on changeover day.
The carer's daily break. Broomfield Park is the obvious place for a carer to take their protected time off, with its ponds and gardens a few minutes from Green Lanes. Palmers Green Library stayed open through Enfield's 2025 closures and now opens on Wednesdays as well.
Coming home from North Middlesex or Barnet
Most of Palmers Green goes to North Middlesex University Hospital in Edmonton, a direct ride on the W6. Depending on the address, some people go to Barnet Hospital instead. Both are Royal Free London hospitals. If live-in care is part of the discharge plan, call us while the ward is still planning, and read our hospital discharge support page.
Funding and the free assessment
Enfield Council can contribute after a needs assessment and a means test; our live-in care in Enfield page sets out the route, including direct payments. A husband or wife who has been the main carer can ask Enfield Carers Centre for a carer's assessment, which it carries out for the council. If needs are mainly medical, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. For how a placement works day to day, see live-in care in London. We quote in writing after assessing.

Live-in care in Palmers Green: your questions
Questions families ask us about Palmers Green. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionCan the live-in carer cook Greek Cypriot food the way Mum likes it?
The carer can cook her recipes with her, or follow her instructions, and keep to the fasts if she observes them. Write down the dishes she eats most and we will put them in the care plan.
Mum goes to church on Sunday mornings. Could that be when the carer takes their break?
It can, if a relative or someone from church takes her and brings her home. Otherwise the carer goes with her and takes the break at another time of day. Whichever you choose goes into the care plan.
Mum lives in the ground-floor flat and my brother owns the flat above. Could the carer sleep upstairs?
Possibly, if the room is private and close enough for the carer to hear and reach her quickly. We would look at both flats at the assessment before agreeing. For anyone who needs help at night, the carer has to be in the same home.
Our street is just off Green Lanes. Will my sister be able to park when she comes to meet the new carer?
Check the signs at the end of your road. Streets near the shops may be in the controlled zone, where your mother can buy books of visitor vouchers from the council. Many roads further from Green Lanes have no permit restrictions.
