Live-in Care in Edmonton

A carer who lives in with your relative in N9 or N18, planned around a discharge from North Middlesex or set up for the long term, in a tower flat, an estate maisonette or a terraced house.

Yes, we arrange live-in care across Edmonton, from Edmonton Green and Church Street to Fore Street, Silver Street and Meridian Water. A trained carer moves into the spare bedroom and supports your relative through the day, following a written care plan that Jackie, our registered manager, draws up after a free assessment in the home. Because the carer lives in, the travel from our Lewisham office has no bearing on the care itself.

Can a live-in carer be there when Mum leaves North Middlesex?

Often, yes, provided we hear early. North Middlesex University Hospital sits on Sterling Way at the bottom of Upper Edmonton, so for N9 and N18 it is usually where an emergency admission ends up, and where the question of care at home is first raised. Its wards and Enfield's district nurses now belong to the same trust, the Royal Free London, and the discharge plan is settled between the ward, those community teams and Enfield Adult Social Care.

Ring us when the ward first talks about going home, before a date is fixed. That leaves time to assess at home, to check the bedroom and bathroom, and to choose a carer who suits your mother. If a date is set before we can be ready, we will say so plainly so the ward can plan around it.

Live-in care fits a discharge here for a practical reason. Follow-up clinics, blood tests and physiotherapy are often back at North Mid, a short bus ride from most of Edmonton. A live-in carer can take her to those appointments, keep track of new medicines and stay with her through the first unsettled nights. When she is stronger, the arrangement can end or step down. See our hospital discharge support for how we work with wards.

Does live-in care work in a tower flat?

It can, if the flat has two bedrooms. Edmonton has more flats than anywhere else in Enfield, including the 1970s towers of Grampian, Mendip and Pennine House above Edmonton Green and the low-rise estates either side of the Hertford Road. Three of the area's panel-built blocks, Walbrook, Cheshire and Shropshire House, have been emptied over safety concerns. If your relative was rehoused from one of them, check that the new flat really has a second bedroom free before planning on a carer living in.

  • One bedroom: a live-in carer cannot stay. They need a private room, not a sofa. Visiting care may be possible instead, depending on carer availability; see home care in Edmonton.
  • Two bedrooms with a lift: usually workable. We write into the plan what happens when the lift is out, including how the carer gets shopping and prescriptions up and what to do if a hospital appointment falls on that day.
  • Equipment: if a hoist, hospital bed or commode is coming from the hospital or the council, it has to fit in a tower-block bedroom with room for the carer to work. We measure at the assessment.

If the flat is a council or housing association tenancy, check the tenancy terms and let the landlord know someone is living in to provide care.

Changeover day on the Weaver line

Carers arrive and leave by Overground. Edmonton Green and Silver Street are on the Weaver line from Liverpool Street, and Meridian Water has Greater Anglia trains, so a replacement carer for a holiday or a planned change reaches Edmonton more easily than any other part of the borough.

Edmonton has several controlled parking zones, mainly around the stations and North Middlesex, but plenty of residential streets are still unrestricted, so a relative driving over to meet a new carer can often park. A proposed zone north of Edmonton Green, around Balham Road and Croyland Road, was consulted on in 2025 and dropped, so those roads stay free. Where a zone does apply, residents can buy books of visitor vouchers from the council for family members who come by car.

The carer's daily break in N9 and N18

Every live-in carer needs a protected break each day. In Edmonton they have somewhere to go. Edmonton Green Library, inside the shopping centre, kept its doors open through Enfield's 2025 library cuts and now opens on Sundays. Fore Street Library in Upper Edmonton also stayed open, and Pymmes Park, off Silver Street, is a short walk from much of N18. While the carer is out, the person needs to be safe: a neighbour or relative calling in, or a session at a day centre, can cover it. For someone with dementia, a day at Age UK Enfield's specialist centre, now in Brimsdown, can cover the carer's break as well.

Paying for live-in care after a stay in hospital

If the person's needs after discharge are mainly health needs, ask the ward whether an NHS Continuing Healthcare checklist has been done; the NHS guide explains the process. Otherwise Enfield Council's needs assessment and means test decide what it contributes, and funding can come as a direct payment. Our live-in care in Enfield page covers the council route. We give a written quote after our own assessment, and the London live-in care page explains how placements work.

Edmonton live-in care questions

Questions families ask us about Edmonton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad's flat in Edmonton Green has two bedrooms but the second is full of boxes. Is that a problem?

Only until it is cleared. The carer needs a bed, somewhere to hang clothes and a door that closes. We look at the room at the assessment and tell you what needs to happen before the first night.

The ward wants to discharge Mum to my house in Upper Edmonton, not her own. Can the carer live with us?

Yes, if there is a spare room for the carer as well as one for your mother. We assess your home, not hers, and write the care plan around your household's routine.

Can live-in care just cover the weeks after a stay at North Middlesex?

Yes. We can agree a short placement for recovery and review it as she improves. You can extend it, move to visits if we can staff them, or finish.

What happens if the lift in the tower breaks while the carer is living in?

The carer stays with your relative, so they are not left alone upstairs. The care plan says who to contact and how meals and medication are covered until the lift is fixed. If a hospital appointment is due, the carer rings the clinic to rearrange it.
