Live-in Care in Finsbury Park, N4

A carer who moves into the spare room of a flat on the Andover Estate, off Blackstock Road or beside the station, and lives there with one person or a couple.

Yes, we arrange live-in care on the Islington side of Finsbury Park. A carer moves in, has their own bedroom, and supports the person with personal care, medication, meals and getting out, with a protected break each day. It begins with a free assessment at home, usually by Jackie, our registered manager, and a written care plan. Because the carer lives in, the distance from our Lewisham office does not affect the care.

Is there room for a live-in carer in a Finsbury Park flat?

The answer depends on which of three kinds of home it is.

  • The Andover and Six Acres estates. The Andover, between Hornsey Road and Durham Road, is mostly 1970s, including the triangular Didbin, Noll and Docura Houses. A two- or three-bedroom council flat is where live-in care fits best: a grown-up child's old room becomes the carer's room.
  • Victorian houses split into flats. Off Blackstock Road, a conversion may have a second bedroom, often a small back room. It works if it takes a proper single bed and has a door that closes.
  • The newer blocks by the station. Flats are compact. A two-bedroom flat with a lift can suit a wheelchair user well.

In a one-bedroom flat, live-in care cannot work, and we say so on the first call. The options are visiting care in Finsbury Park, which depends on carer availability, family covering nights, or raising extra care sheltered housing in the council's needs assessment.

Lifts, stairs and getting equipment in

In the Andover's three triangular towers, everything depends on the lifts. With a carer living in, a lift outage no longer stops care: the carer is already inside, so meals, medication and personal care carry on. What it stops is getting out, so the care plan says who reports the fault and which appointments move.

In the conversions off Blackstock Road the stairs are permanent. A carer can steady someone on a shared staircase, but many are too narrow for a stairlift, and a hospital bed or hoist has to come up them too. Where equipment is needed, ask Islington Council for an occupational therapy assessment before the carer moves in.

First check the council. Finsbury Park is split between Islington, Haringey and Hackney. The steps here are for Islington addresses. For an address over the line, see live-in care in Haringey or live-in care in Hackney.

Changeover day at Finsbury Park station

Few places in north London make a carer handover easier. Victoria, Piccadilly, Great Northern and Thameslink trains all stop here, and after upgrades finished in 2019 and 2023 every platform is step-free, which helps a carer arriving with a suitcase. The outgoing and incoming carers then meet at the flat and hand over in person.

If someone drives the carer in, the resident can buy visitor parking vouchers from the council. Several zones add controls for Arsenal home games and Emirates events, when paper vouchers are not valid, so use e-vouchers and check the council's match-day restrictions page before you book a changeover for a Saturday afternoon.

Where the carer takes their break

A live-in carer's daily break is better spent out of the flat. Close by:

  • Finsbury Park itself. Across Seven Sisters Road and run by Haringey, with a café and a lake.
  • N4 Library at 26 Blackstock Road, near the Seven Sisters Road junction. Step-free, with free wifi. It closes on Sundays and at 1pm on Thursdays (check the hours).
  • Gillespie Park, the council's nature reserve off Drayton Park, near Arsenal station.

The same places work for the person: a wheelchair round the lake, or the shops on Blackstock Road. Finsbury Park Mosque, by the station, is in Islington, and the care plan can include Friday prayers or another place of worship. A dementia singing group at Park Theatre on Clifton Terrace is listed among Age UK Islington's dementia-friendly activities.

From a Whittington ward to a flat on Seven Sisters Road

For the Islington side of N4 the local hospital is the Whittington at Archway, and some people are treated at UCH. Because Finsbury Park straddles three boroughs, tell the ward early which council the home address falls under: the Whittington's social work team supports Islington residents, while someone living over the line goes through Haringey or Hackney for any council support after discharge. A live-in carer is in the flat from the first day home, keeps on top of new medicines and goes with them to follow-up clinics.

Tell the ward and Whittington Health's social work team as soon as live-in care is being considered, and call us at the same point, before a date is fixed. We need to assess, see the room and match a carer, and we tell you plainly if we cannot be ready. See hospital discharge support.

Paying for live-in care from N4

The assessment is free, and we give a written quote afterwards. Council funding for an Islington address starts with a needs assessment and then a financial assessment, both covered on our Islington live-in care page. Where needs are mainly health needs, ask the ward or GP about NHS Continuing Healthcare, which is not means-tested. Our London live-in care page explains how carers, breaks and holiday cover work.

Live-in care in Finsbury Park: your questions

Questions families ask us about Finsbury Park. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad lives in one of the triangular towers on the Andover Estate. Can a live-in carer go there?

Yes, if his flat has a spare bedroom the carer can have to themselves. We check the room and lift access at the free assessment.

Can the carer's partner drop them off by car on a match day?

They can, but it is harder. Your zone may have match-day controls, and paper visitor vouchers are not valid then. Buy an e-voucher, or plan the changeover for a non-match day.

Mum's flat on Blackstock Road has a box room. Is that enough?

It might be. It needs a proper bed, a door that closes and space for the carer's things, and cannot double as storage. We will tell you honestly at the assessment.

Will the carer take my husband to Friday prayers at the mosque by the station?

If he wants to go and it is safe, yes. Regular outings like this go into his care plan.

Can we try live-in care for a few weeks after the Whittington before deciding?

Yes. Live-in care can cover the weeks after discharge and then step down to visits (which in N4 depend on carer availability), or carry on. We review the plan as recovery goes on.
