Live-in Care in Stroud Green, N4 and N8

A carer who lives in, for the Victorian houses and conversions on the slope between Finsbury Park and Crouch Hill, where the spare room is the first thing to check.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Stroud Green, on both the Haringey and the Islington side of Stroud Green Road. A trained carer moves into a spare bedroom and supports one person or a couple under a written care plan. It starts with a free home assessment by Jackie, our registered manager, who checks first whether there is a room the carer can call their own.

Will a live-in carer fit in a Stroud Green conversion?

Most of Stroud Green's Victorian houses were split into flats long ago, so it depends on what the person has:

  • A house still in one piece. Usually a bedroom to spare, often on another floor, which works as long as the carer can hear the person.
  • A two-bedroom conversion. Workable if the second room is cleared and kept as the carer's, not a room a grandchild uses at weekends.
  • A one-bedroom flat. Live-in care is not possible. Visiting care is the alternative, and it is realistic here because carers can reach Finsbury Park on the Victoria line; see home care in Stroud Green.

Common stairs, private stairs and equipment

The stairs to an upper flat are often shared with the flat below, and there is almost never a lift. A carer can walk beside someone on the stairs but cannot carry them, so if going out has become unsafe, get an occupational therapist's advice early. A stairlift on a staircase shared with other flats will usually need the freeholder's permission. A Disabled Facilities Grant from the council can help with the cost of adaptations for people who qualify.

Inside, a mobile hoist needs floor space that narrow Victorian landings rarely give; a ceiling track hoist or a profiling bed in the main room can work better. Where every transfer needs two people, we will say so and plan the extra help.

Changeover day. The incoming carer climbs the hill with a suitcase, so it helps to know which end of Stroud Green Road the house is nearer: Finsbury Park station at the bottom, or Crouch Hill on the Suffragette line near the top. Avoid booking a handover on an Arsenal home match or a big Finsbury Park event day, when the Finsbury Park parking zones run into the evening and the station is crowded. Family driving over can buy a virtual visitor permit through the resident's parking account.

Where the carer goes on their daily break

A live-in carer is entitled to a protected break every day, and it works best when they can properly step out. The Parkland Walk, a 4km nature reserve on the old railway line from Finsbury Park to Alexandra Palace, is a few minutes from most front doors. Finsbury Park is at the bottom of the hill, with cafés on Stroud Green Road on the way. Stroud Green and Harringay Library on Quernmore Road is a quiet indoor option, but it is closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

If the person cannot be left, someone has to cover the break: often family, and for someone with a dementia diagnosis, the council's Haynes Dementia Hub on Park Road in Hornsey runs day opportunities. The care plan says who.

Coming home from the Whittington

For most of Stroud Green, the acute hospital is the Whittington in Archway. After a fall or an operation, the stairs may suddenly be impossible and help is needed at odd hours. A live-in carer who is there from day one can collect prescriptions, let the district nurse in and settle the person back into their routine.

Tell the ward early that you are arranging live-in care, then ring us so we can assess and match a carer before the discharge date. We will be straight about what we can arrange in time; see hospital discharge support.

Two people, one carer

Where a couple still have a whole house, not one of the conversions, there is usually room for a carer. One live-in carer can give full personal care to one partner and lighter help to the other with cooking, shopping and getting down the hill, with the care plan setting out both. If one partner has dementia, the other gets real rest and stops being on call around the clock.

Who pays for live-in care in Stroud Green?

We quote in writing after the free assessment; we do not publish prices. On funding, the first question is which council you deal with. On the Haringey side, Haringey Adult Social Care carries out the needs assessment and the financial assessment; our Haringey live-in care page explains how that works. On the Islington side, see our Islington live-in care page. Where needs are mainly health needs, ask the GP or the ward about NHS Continuing Healthcare, which is not means-tested. Live-in care in Stroud Green: your questions

Questions families ask us about Stroud Green. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Could a carer sleep in Mum's living room for a fortnight after she leaves the Whittington?

No, not even for two weeks. Before she leaves the ward, ask whether a family member with a spare room nearby could have her to stay with a live-in carer there, or let us plan visits to her flat for those first weeks instead.

The only spare room is in the basement and Dad sleeps on the first floor. Will the carer hear him?

We plan for it, usually with a baby-monitor-style receiver or a pendant alarm that sounds in the carer's room. If he needs help several times most nights, standard live-in care is not enough, and we will talk through what is.

How does the carer get to the house at changeover, and do they need parking?

Usually by train to Finsbury Park, Crouch Hill or Harringay, then on foot or by bus. Few bring a car; if one does, the Stroud Green CPZ only runs at weekday lunchtimes.

Who sits with my mother while the carer takes their break?

We agree that before the carer arrives. If she can safely be alone for a while, a pendant alarm may be enough; if not, family, a day session or extra cover from us fills the gap.

My parents own a whole house off Stapleton Hall Road. Can one carer look after both of them?

Often, yes, if one carer can safely meet both sets of needs. We assess each of them separately at the same visit and tell you plainly if a couple's needs are too high for one person.
