Live-in Care in Crouch End
A carer who lives in, for a Crouch End house with room to spare, or a plan that works around a converted flat with one bedroom and a long staircase.
Yes, we provide live-in care in Crouch End and the rest of N8. We begin with a free assessment in the home with Jackie, our registered manager, and a written care plan, and then a trained carer moves in and supports your relative through the day. With no station in Crouch End, live-in care is often the most dependable way for us to help here, because the carer travels at changeover and not every morning.
Whole house or converted flat?
Crouch End's late-Victorian and Edwardian houses were built for large households, and those still lived in as a single home nearly always have a room the carer can use. The difficulty is the many houses split into flats. A ground-floor conversion may have two bedrooms and a garden. An upper-floor one, reached by its own front door and a steep private stair, often has one bedroom and a box room too small for a bed.
In a whole house the free room is often at the top, two floors above a parent who has moved their bed down to the front room. That can still work, with a monitor or pendant alarm that sounds in the carer's room. In a ground-floor conversion, the back dining room that opens onto the garden is often the one that becomes the carer's bedroom, as long as it has a door that closes.
If there is only one bedroom
Live-in care is not possible in a one-bedroom flat, and we will not suggest otherwise. The options we talk through with families in that position are:
- Visits, if we can staff them at the times needed. Crouch End is a long journey from our Lewisham office, so ask about specific times and we will be honest. See home care in Crouch End.
- A spell at a relative's home with a live-in carer there, for example after a hospital stay, if family nearby have the space.
- A move to a ground-floor flat or to one of Haringey's Extra Care schemes for people aged 55 and over, discussed with the council's adult social care team.
What does a steep staircase mean for a live-in carer?
More than it does for visits. A visiting carer comes and goes; a live-in carer is helping your relative up and down the stairs several times a day, to the bathroom, to bed and out of the front door. We look at three things at the assessment: whether the stair has a handrail on both sides, whether the bathroom is on the same floor as the bedroom, and whether a stairlift would fit the turn of the stair. Hoists need floor space beside the bed, which some upstairs bedrooms in conversions don't have. The council's occupational therapist assesses and supplies equipment, and we fit the care plan around what they recommend.
Changeover by bus, with a suitcase
The incoming carer travels with their luggage, so the route matters. The 91 runs from King's Cross to Crouch End Broadway, the W7 from Finsbury Park station, and the 41 from Archway. Crouch Hill station (Overground Suffragette line) and Hornsey station (Great Northern) are both within walking distance. For family driving over on the day, Crouch End's controlled zones run for only two hours on weekdays, so parking outside those hours is usually free.
A Crouch End afternoon off
The carer's daily break is part of every placement, and N8 makes it easy to fill. Hornsey Library, a Grade II listed building on Haringey Park, has quiet study space and an art gallery. Priory Park is a short walk north towards Hornsey, and the Parkland Walk, a footpath along an old railway line, runs from near Crouch End towards Highgate and Finsbury Park. On days when your relative wants company out of the house, the carer can go with them for a coffee on the Broadway first and take their own break afterwards.
Dementia, with someone in the house all day
For someone living with dementia, a single carer who knows the routine can matter more than frequent visits. The council's Haynes Dementia Hub on Park Road is close by and runs a day service, a day opportunities hub and a support group for relatives. A hub day can give the live-in carer their break while your relative spends time with others. See our dementia care page for how we approach it.
Discharge from the Whittington. Crouch End patients usually go to the Whittington Hospital in Archway, and the 41 bus links the two. Whittington Health also runs Haringey's district nursing, so if your relative comes home needing dressings or injections, the nurses visit and the live-in carer handles the rest of the day. Call us while the ward is still planning.
Does owning the house stop the council helping with live-in care?
Not on its own. Many older Crouch End residents own the house they bought decades ago. When care is provided in your own home, the council's financial assessment leaves out the value of the home you live in, which it would count for a care home place; your savings and income are still assessed. Our Haringey live-in care page explains the needs and financial assessments and how direct payments work. Where needs are mainly health needs, ask the GP or ward about NHS Continuing Healthcare. We give a written quote after the free assessment, and our London live-in care page covers how live-in care works day to day.

Crouch End live-in care: what families ask
Questions families ask us about Crouch End. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum's flat has a bedroom and a small study. Will the study do for the carer?
Often, if a single bed fits with somewhere to hang clothes, and the door closes so the carer has privacy. We measure it at the assessment. If it is too small, we will say so.
Dad is fine downstairs but the only bathroom is at the top of the house. Can a live-in carer help?
Yes. The carer can go up and down with him each time, and the plan may add a commode or a downstairs wash routine for the night. If the stairs become unsafe, the occupational therapist can assess for a stairlift or a downstairs bathroom.
Can the carer take Mum to the Haynes Dementia Hub?
Yes. The hub is on Park Road, which leads off the Broadway and is served by the W7, so the carer can walk or take the bus there with her, settle her in and use the hours she is there for their own break. Her place has to be agreed first; we can help you ask her social worker or GP about it.
We're on the Stroud Green side of Crouch Hill. Is that still covered?
Yes. Live-in care is available across N8 and N4, on both the Haringey and Islington sides of the boundary. Which council you contact for funding depends on the address.
