Home Care in West Drayton

Help at home for older and disabled people in UB7, from the canal and the Green to the estates towards Heathrow and Yiewsley High Street: live-in care, personal care, dementia care and short breaks.

We can provide home care in West Drayton. Live-in care is available throughout UB7, and visiting care is possible where we have a carer free to make the Elizabeth line journey from south-east London, roughly 70 minutes each way. We start with a free home assessment and a written care plan, and we will be straight with you about which visits we can staff.

A town shaped by the canal and the airport

West Drayton sits in the south-west corner of Hillingdon, with the Grand Union Canal running along its northern edge and Heathrow just to the south. The old centre around the Green is a conservation area. Across the railway, Yiewsley's High Street has the everyday shops. Aircraft noise and airport traffic are part of daily life, and for someone with dementia or poor sleep, the noise can be a real factor: it is worth telling us which rooms are quietest, so the care plan can use them.

What the housing means for care

West Drayton has a mix. Victorian and interwar terraces near the old centre usually mean a steep, narrow staircase and a bathroom upstairs, so a ground-floor bedroom or a commode can become necessary sooner than in a bigger house. The post-war council homes are often more practical, with level access in the ground-floor flats. The newer blocks by the station and along the canal have lifts and step-free entrances, but smaller rooms.

For a live-in carer the one firm requirement is a spare bedroom. Many two-bedroom terraces and flats here have one. Where there is a hoist or a profiling bed, we check at the assessment that there is room to use it safely.

How far is West Drayton from the hospital and from Uxbridge?

Hillingdon Hospital on Pield Heath Road, the borough's only A&E and its main discharge point, is about two miles north. The U3 bus runs from Heathrow through West Drayton and Yiewsley, past the hospital, to Uxbridge, which makes visiting and outpatient trips straightforward. The hospital trust is due to rebuild Hillingdon Hospital on the same site over the coming years, so expect some departments to move around.

Uxbridge is also where one of our three supported living homes is. For a West Drayton family it is the closest of the three, which can matter if a short stay away from home is ever on the table.

Because the U3 links the ward to West Drayton directly, family can be at the bedside for discharge planning meetings without a car. Use those meetings to say you are arranging care, and ring us as soon as a date is mentioned. Our hospital discharge support page explains how we help.

Getting out matters here. The canal towpath is flat, and Yiewsley High Street is close by. A carer can help someone with a walker get to the shops and back, which keeps them moving and connected. That is what our companionship and home help visits are for.

Starting with Hillingdon Council

The council's front door for adult social care is Hillingdon Social Care Direct, on 01895 556633 on weekdays, or online through the council's applying for social care page. After a needs assessment, an eligible person gets a personal budget, and it can be paid as a direct payment on a pre-paid card so they can choose their provider. Our Hillingdon home care page explains the rest, and Hillingdon's dementia help and support pages list the Admiral Nurse team and other services for families.

What does home care in West Drayton cost?

We do not give prices before we have assessed, because they depend on the hours and the kind of care. You will get a written quote after the visit. If the council is involved, its financial assessment decides what the person contributes. If needs are mainly health needs, ask the GP or ward about NHS Continuing Healthcare. Our paying for care guide covers both.

Breaks for family carers

If the council assesses the person you look after, an amount for respite can be built into their personal budget and passed to you as a direct payment to buy replacement care, such as a live-in carer for a week or two of respite care. For a parent with dementia, Age UK Hillingdon, Harrow and Brent's dementia sitting service gives a few hours off at a time. Carers Trust Hillingdon's office on Uxbridge High Street is on the U3 route.

Your West Drayton questions

Questions families ask us about West Drayton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
The planes wake Mum at night and she gets confused. Can a live-in carer help?

A live-in carer is there if she wakes, can settle her and can help build a calmer evening routine. If she needs someone up with her most nights, that is a different arrangement, which we would discuss and price at the assessment.

Do you cover Yiewsley as well as West Drayton?

Yes. Yiewsley shares the UB7 postcode and West Drayton station, and we cover both on the same basis.

Could Dad have a short stay at your Uxbridge home instead of a carer at home?

Possibly. Our Uxbridge home offers permanent and respite stays, and it is close to West Drayton. Whether it suits him depends on his needs, so see the supported living page and ask us.

Mum's terrace near the Green has a steep staircase and no downstairs toilet. What happens?

We look at it during the assessment. Common answers are a commode downstairs, moving her bed to the front room, or a council occupational therapist assessment for rails or a stairlift. A carer can help her on the stairs while that is sorted out.
