Home Care in Southall
Care at home in UB1 and UB2, from the streets off the Broadway and Havelock Road to Norwood Green and the new homes at The Green Quarter, planned around the household the person already lives in.
We can arrange home care in Southall, and in practice that usually means live-in care: a carer who lives in the home, works to a written care plan and is replaced by a second carer for time off. Southall is a long way from our Lewisham office, so visiting care depends on having a carer free at the right times, and we will tell you honestly whether we do. We start with a free home assessment.
Coming home from Ealing Hospital
Ealing Hospital is on the Uxbridge Road at the eastern edge of Southall (UB1 3HW), so for many families here the hospital is down the road. Before the discharge date, ask the ward what the person can do on their own now: get to the toilet, climb the stairs, wash. If the answer has changed since admission, ask for Ealing adult social care to be involved and for any equipment to be delivered before they arrive. For parts of west Southall, Hillingdon Hospital is the nearer A&E, and the same questions apply there.
Care in a household with several generations
Southall has one of the largest Punjabi and Sikh communities in Britain, and many older people here live with sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. That shapes care in practical ways. Where relatives want to keep doing much of the caring themselves, a carer can take on just the parts that have become too heavy or too intimate, such as bathing or help in the night. It also affects live-in care, because in a full house there may not be a bedroom the carer can have to themselves, and a live-in carer must have one.
At the assessment, tell us what matters: diet and how food is prepared, prayer and visits to the gurdwara on Havelock Road, whether a male or female carer is needed for personal care, and the language the person is most comfortable in. We cannot promise a carer who speaks Punjabi, and we would sooner tell you that at the start.
Southall Day Centre at 43 Shackleton Road (UB1 2QH, 020 8843 1893) runs activities for older adults, including dementia-friendly exercise sessions. Ealing Council lists it on its dementia support page.
How much does home care in Southall cost?
We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on the hours and the kind of help needed, and we quote in writing after the assessment. Ealing Council may pay towards care. It first assesses the person's needs (call 020 8825 8000 or use the forms on its adult social care contact page), then looks at their income and savings. Ealing's paying for your care page says it does not count the home a person owns and lives in when charging for care at home, and that people with savings and assets over £23,250 pay in full. Where someone's needs are mainly health needs, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. More on the council route is on our Ealing home care page.
Southall's streets and homes
Most of Southall is dense Victorian and interwar terraced housing, typically two storeys with the bathroom upstairs. That is the usual sticking point when someone becomes frail: a narrow staircase, a small bathroom with a bath and no shower. The Havelock estate and other council housing bring the familiar questions about lifts and access. Newer flats on the former gasworks site, The Green Quarter, are generally step-free.
Travel and parking
Southall station was rebuilt ahead of the Elizabeth line and, since 2021, has lifts to all four platforms, which helps anyone going to appointments by train. From Lewisham it is roughly 75 to 90 minutes. Buses along the Uxbridge Road include the Superloop SL8. Parts of Southall are in controlled parking Zones L and LL, so a carer or relative who drives should check the signs.
Live-in and respite options
Live-in care works best where the carer can have a room of their own, which is worth thinking about before a crowded family home is assumed to be unsuitable. If the main family carer needs a break, respite care can cover a family wedding, a trip abroad or a hospital stay of their own. Family carers can also ask Ealing for a carer's assessment.

What Southall families ask us
Questions families ask us about Southall. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionCan a carer follow our kitchen rules, such as no meat or eggs in the house?
Yes. Food rules go into the written care plan, and any carer working with the person is expected to follow them.
Can my mother have a female carer for bathing?
Tell us at the assessment and it goes into the care plan. We will confirm whether we can staff it before care begins.
We already do most of the caring. Can you cover just the mornings?
Visiting care in Southall depends on whether a carer is free at those times, because of the distance from our office. Call us and we will check before you plan around it.
Dad lives in Norwood Green. Is that still Southall?
Norwood Green is in UB2 and in the London Borough of Ealing, so the same council route applies. West Middlesex University Hospital in Isleworth may be where he is treated.
Will a live-in carer be able to stay if we have relatives visiting from abroad?
Only if the carer keeps their own bedroom. If the house will be full for a few weeks, talk to us early and we can plan around it.
