Home Care in Hanwell

Live-in care, respite and visits where we can staff them, across W7: the Cuckoo estate, the roads off Boston Road and the Broadway, and the streets running down to the canal and the viaduct.

We cover Hanwell for home care. Live-in care is the dependable option, since the carer lives in and travel from our Lewisham office no longer comes into it; regular visits are possible only when we have a carer free at your times, so ask and we will check. Care begins with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.

Hanwell, street by street

Hanwell was a village before it was a suburb, and you can still read that in the housing.

  • Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the Broadway and Boston Road, popular with families and with people who have lived in them for decades. Steep stairs and an upstairs bathroom are the usual reason visits are needed, and the assessment looks at grab rails, a commode or moving the bed downstairs.
  • The Cuckoo estate, an interwar council estate of cottage-style houses with front and back gardens. Low-rise homes like these are often easier to adapt than a converted flat, and some have a spare room for a live-in carer.
  • Flats around the Broadway, where the questions are about lifts, communal entrances and whether a key safe can go by the door.

Green space close to home. Brent Lodge Park, with its small zoo, the Hanwell flight of locks on the Grand Union Canal and Brunel's Wharncliffe Viaduct are all within W7. A slow walk to see the locks, with someone alongside, is exactly what a companionship visit can be for.

Can I get visiting home care in Hanwell?

Sometimes. Hanwell is over an hour from our office by the DLR and Elizabeth line, so we can only offer visits when a carer is available at the times you need, and we will not promise a start date before we know that. Practical things help: Hanwell station now has lifts from street to platform, so it is step-free for anyone, carer or client, travelling to appointments. Buses on the Uxbridge Road include the E3, E8, 83, 207 and SL8. Around the station and town centre, Ealing's controlled parking Zones H1, H2, HTC and OH (Old Hanwell) apply, which matters if a carer or relative drives.

The visits themselves can cover washing and dressing, help with medication, meals, shopping on the Broadway and company.

Pop-ins, memory cafes and day centres

Hanwell Neighbourly Care, a volunteer charity, runs drop-ins for older people at three places in Hanwell, including North Hanwell Baptist Church and the William Hobbayne Centre, with quizzes, bingo and exercise. They are not specifically for dementia but carers are welcome. The St Barnabas Church memory cafe on Pitshanger Lane is a short trip into W5. Both are listed on Ealing Council's dementia support page.

Does Ealing Council pay for home care in Hanwell?

It can, after two assessments. The council first looks at what help the person needs. Contact its Social Care Advice and Referral Centre on 020 8825 8000 or use the online self-referral form (there is a separate one for relatives and representatives). Then it carries out a financial assessment of income and savings, and for care at home it does not count the value of the house the person lives in. People who would rather choose their own provider can ask about a direct payment. We set out our own charges in writing after our assessment. The full borough route is on our Ealing home care page.

Hospital discharge

Ealing Hospital is about a mile west of Hanwell on the Uxbridge Road, so it is the nearest acute hospital for W7. Ask the ward early about equipment and stairs, and call us before the discharge date if you want an assessment arranged.

Living in, or a short break

Live-in care needs a spare bedroom for the carer; one carer can support a couple. For a family carer who needs time off, respite care can be a short live-in stay or occasional sitting.

Hanwell FAQs

Hanwell FAQs

Questions families ask us about Hanwell. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My aunt lives on the Cuckoo estate and won't leave her garden. Would live-in care work there?

Often it can, if the house has a second bedroom the carer can use. We will look at the layout and the route to the garden at the assessment.

Can a carer take Mum to the Neighbourly Care pop-in?

Yes. Getting someone to a regular drop-in and back can be written into the care plan as part of a visit or a live-in carer's day.

Is Hanwell part of Ealing for council purposes?

Yes. Hanwell is in the London Borough of Ealing, so social care, carers' assessments and parking permits all go through Ealing Council.

Dad's terrace has a bath upstairs and no shower. Where do we start?

Ask Ealing adult social care for an occupational therapy assessment; the council says equipment and minor adaptations up to £1,000 are not charged. We can work around the bathroom in the meantime, for example with strip washes.
