Home Care in Addiscombe, Croydon
Care at home along Lower Addiscombe Road, around Ashburton Park and the tram stops, and in the newer flats on the East Croydon side of CR0.
If you need home care in Addiscombe, we can help in two ways. We can provide live-in care at any home with a spare bedroom, or visits for personal care, meals, medication and company where we have a carer available at your times. Call us with the address and we will tell you which is realistic. Nothing starts until we have carried out a free assessment at home and agreed a written care plan with you.
A neighbourhood that runs on the tram
Addiscombe used to have a railway station at the end of the line from Elmers End. It closed in 1997, the old station site is now housing on East India Way, and part of the trackbed has become Addiscombe Railway Park. Since 2000, Tramlink has done the job instead, with stops at Addiscombe, Blackhorse Lane, Lebanon Road and Sandilands. East Croydon station is within walking distance of the western end, for anyone who can manage the walk.
For us that shapes the journey. From our Lewisham office, a carer can take the Hayes line to Elmers End and then the tram or the 289 bus, which comes in past Ashburton Park. Or they can go into London Bridge and out again to East Croydon. Either way it is a real trip, so visiting calls depend on having someone available for your times.
Local buses are useful too:
- The 289 continues from Addiscombe tram stop through West Croydon to Croydon University Hospital, the borough's main hospital, so outpatient visits and the journey home from hospital need no change.
- The 312 links Addiscombe with Norwood Junction one way and East Croydon and Purley the other.
Seminary land, terraces and semis
Much of Addiscombe stands on the grounds of the East India Company's military seminary, which trained officers for the Company's army in India from 1809 until 1861. That year the site was sold to the British Land Company, which demolished most of the buildings, and the land was laid out as streets of houses. The name East India Way is a later reminder of that history.
The housing changes as you go east. Near East Croydon there are modern blocks of flats with lifts. In the middle, along and behind Lower Addiscombe Road, are two-storey terraces with the bathroom upstairs. Towards Shirley there are larger semis with drives. Each one leads to a different plan:
- A modern flat is usually easy for a wheelchair or a hoist, but a one-bedroom flat cannot take a live-in carer.
- A terrace usually has a spare room for a live-in carer, but the stairs are the issue. A stairlift, or moving the bed downstairs, is often the first conversation.
- A semi towards Shirley has space and parking, which helps with both live-in care and visits.
Parking. The streets nearest East Croydon are in Croydon's East Inner and East Outer permit zones. A carer who drives will need a household visitor day permit, booked through RingGo, or a pay-and-display bay, because Croydon has no separate permit for care workers. Visitor permits are explained on the council site.
Can I use a direct payment for home care in Addiscombe?
Yes, if Croydon Council assesses your relative as having eligible needs. The route starts with a needs assessment request, made online or by phone on 020 8726 6500. A financial assessment follows to decide what the person contributes. The council can then pay its share as a direct payment, which can be used with a CQC-registered agency such as ours. In Croydon, Kingston Centre for Independent Living helps people set up and manage direct payments. We provide our own written quote after assessing. Our Croydon home care page covers the borough as a whole.
Respite and live-in care
For a family carer who needs a break, a live-in carer can stay for a planned week or two as respite care, provided there is a room for them. Carers First, which supports Croydon's unpaid carers from 24 George Street in the town centre, can help with a carer's assessment and advice. For long-term support, live-in care avoids the journey altogether, and one carer can support a couple.

Addiscombe: your questions
Questions families ask us about Addiscombe. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum doesn't drive and Addiscombe has no station. How would she get to hospital appointments?
The 289 runs from Addiscombe tram stop to Croydon University Hospital without a change, and the tram reaches East Croydon in a few stops. If appointments are part of her care plan, a carer can travel with her and wait.
She has a one-bedroom flat near East Croydon. Can she have live-in care?
Not in a one-bedroom flat, because a live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own. We can look at whether visits are possible at her times and talk through other options at the assessment.
Who helps with the paperwork for a direct payment in Croydon?
Kingston Centre for Independent Living runs Croydon's direct payment support service, on 020 8546 9603 or through its Croydon page. They can help with setting up a direct payment and managing it once it is running.
Dad lives towards Shirley. Is that still Addiscombe for your purposes?
It is all in the London Borough of Croydon, so the council route is the same. Live-in care works anywhere, and visiting care depends on carer availability for that address.
Is there anywhere nearby for a gentle walk with a carer?
Ashburton Park, Addiscombe Recreation Ground and Addiscombe Railway Park are all close by, and Ashburton Library is on Shirley Road. Outings like these can be part of a companionship visit.
