Home Care in Purley, CR8

Care at home around Purley Cross and the High Street, up the hills towards Woodcote, Russell Hill and Kenley, and down the Brighton Road to Purley Oaks and Reedham.

Yes, we provide home care in Purley. Purley is about an hour from our Lewisham office, so live-in care is the option we can arrange most reliably here, and visiting calls depend on whether we have a carer free for the times you need. Every arrangement starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.

Where the A23 meets the A22

Purley is a crossroads. The Brighton Road (A23) and the Godstone Road (A22) meet at the Purley Cross gyratory, and the Purley Way runs north from here towards Waddon and central Croydon. The town centre around the High Street and the Downlands Precinct is compact; almost everything else is residential, and most of it sits on a hillside.

Purley grew fast in the 1920s and 1930s, and the roads climbing west towards Woodcote and east towards Riddlesdown are lined with the spacious interwar houses of that period. Off Woodcote Road is the Webb Estate, a private gated estate of around 220 Edwardian houses in large gardens. Closer to the station and the town centre there are blocks of flats, which suit people who want everything on one level.

Hills, steps and sloping drives

The houses that make Purley comfortable to live in are the same ones that make frailty harder. Before the first visit we look at the approach to the front door as carefully as the inside:

  • The drive and the steps. Many Purley houses sit above or below the road, and a carer arriving on an icy morning, or someone coming home in a wheelchair, needs a safe route in. We note handrails, lighting and where a key safe can go.
  • Bathrooms upstairs. In most semis the only bathroom is on the first floor. If the stairs are becoming a struggle, the assessment covers whether a stairlift, a commode or a ground-floor shower room is the answer, and what the council's occupational therapists can provide.
  • Parking. The Purley Permit Zone controls streets near the town centre, where a visiting carer would need a visitor permit (Croydon issues these through RingGo) or a pay-and-display bay. Most residential roads further up the hills are uncontrolled.

How do I get a council care assessment if I live in Purley?

Purley is part of the London Borough of Croydon, so Croydon Council Adult Social Care is the route. You can request a needs assessment online, or call 020 8726 6500 if the form is not practical. If the council finds eligible needs, a financial assessment follows. Families paying privately can come straight to us; we quote after the assessment. Our Croydon home care page explains direct payments and the rest of the borough-wide picture.

Purley Hospital is for clinics, not discharge

Purley War Memorial Hospital is close by on Brighton Road, but it is an outpatient site run by Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, with no inpatient beds, so admissions and discharges happen at Croydon University Hospital on London Road in Thornton Heath. From Purley, the 60 bus (from the Christchurch Road / Purley Hospital stop) and the 289 (from Purley station, via the Purley Way) both run to the hospital without a change. If someone is coming home and needs support after discharge, call us before the discharge date if you can, so the assessment can happen around it.

Three stations, two lines. Purley and Purley Oaks are on the Brighton main line, and Reedham is on the Tattenham Corner branch. Purley station, beside the town centre and its buses, is usually the simplest arrival point for visiting family.

Live-in care in a Purley house

The interwar semis and detached houses here usually have a spare bedroom, which is what a live-in carer needs. Once that is in place, the distance from Lewisham stops mattering: the carer lives in the home, with proper daily breaks agreed in the care plan. For a couple, one live-in carer can support both, with personal care for one and lighter help for the other.

Short breaks for the person doing the caring

If you look after someone in Purley, respite care can cover a holiday, your own operation or a rest; this far south, a live-in carer for a week or two is the practical form. Carers First runs Croydon's carers service at 24 George Street in central Croydon, and the council offers carers' assessments of their own.

Purley questions

Questions families ask us about Purley. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum has an outpatient appointment at Purley Hospital. Can a carer go with her?

Yes, escorting someone to an appointment can be part of a care plan. Tell us the date and time early, because how we staff it depends on whether a carer is available for that slot.

My parents live on the Webb Estate. Is there anything different about arranging care there?

It is a private gated estate, so we will need to agree how carers get through the gates, and whether the estate has rules about key safes or parking. We sort this out at the assessment.

Does Purley count as Croydon or Surrey for council care?

Purley is in the London Borough of Croydon, even though the postal address can sound like Surrey. Croydon Council handles needs assessments and funding for Purley residents.

Our house has steep steps up from the road. Will that stop care at home?

Rarely, but it changes the plan. We look at handrails, lighting and how someone would get in and out after a hospital stay, and we can point you to the council's occupational therapy route for adaptations.
