Home Care in Thornton Heath, CR7
Visiting care, live-in care and support after a hospital stay for older and disabled people between the clock tower, Thornton Heath Pond and Croydon University Hospital.
Yes, JNP Sidona provides home care in Thornton Heath. A live-in carer can be arranged for any CR7 address with a spare bedroom, and visiting calls for personal care, medication or companionship depend on whether we have a carer free for the times you need, so call us with the postcode and we will give you a straight answer. Care starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.
Living round the corner from the hospital
Croydon University Hospital, which many older residents still call Mayday, stands at 530 London Road, CR7 7YE. It began as the infirmary of the Croydon Workhouse, opened in May 1885, and it is now the borough's main hospital with an A&E, run by Croydon Health Services NHS Trust. For people in Thornton Heath it is a local hospital in the literal sense: the 250 runs from the clock tower past the station to the hospital, and the 64, 109 and 289 all stop at both Thornton Heath Pond and the hospital.
Being close makes visiting easy, but discharge can come quickly. If your relative is on a ward there, ring us as soon as going home is mentioned. Our hospital discharge support page explains how we work with the ward's plan.
From the clock tower to the Pond
Thornton Heath grew after the railway arrived in 1862. The old centre was Thornton Heath Pond, on the London to Brighton road where London Road meets Thornton Road and Brigstock Road, and where the Arriva bus garage now stands. The newer centre is the High Street, which runs down from the clock tower at Parchmore Road, put up in 1900, towards the station.
Either side of it are streets of late-Victorian and Edwardian terraces, around Parchmore Road, Grange Road, Bensham Lane and Brigstock Road, with a scattering of purpose-built low-rise blocks. Many of the terraces have been split into an upstairs and a downstairs flat. For care, that means two things to check at the assessment:
- Upper-floor flats often have a steep, straight flight of stairs behind their own front door. That flight decides how someone gets out to appointments and whether a stairlift will fit.
- Ground-floor flats are easier to get in and out of, but hallways and bathrooms are narrow, so hoists and beds need measuring first.
Parking for visiting carers. Streets near the centre fall in Croydon's Thornton Heath permit zone. Croydon has no special permit for care workers, so a carer who drives will need one of the household's visitor day permits, bought through RingGo, or a pay-and-display bay. The council's controlled parking zone list shows which streets are covered.
Can I get a carer to visit my dad every morning in Thornton Heath?
Possibly. Our office is on Lewisham High Street, and we have no base in Croydon. A morning call for washing, dressing and breakfast, or a teatime visit for medication, works only if a carer is reliably free for those times. We check before agreeing, so you hear a no at the start, not a missed call later.
Live-in care in a split terrace
A live-in carer moves into the home, so the distance from Lewisham does not matter. The one fixed requirement is a bedroom of their own. A two-bedroom maisonette usually works. A one-bedroom conversion usually does not, and in that case we will talk through visiting care or other options. One carer can look after a couple, and we cover the carer's breaks and time off.
When the person caring needs a break
Age UK Croydon runs a weekly session of its Memory Tree Café in Thornton Heath on Wednesday afternoons, for people living with dementia and the family members who look after them. Check the current venue and times with Age UK Croydon before you go.
If a husband, wife or son is doing most of the caring, they are entitled to a carer's assessment from Croydon Council in their own right. Carers First runs the borough's carers centre at 24 George Street in central Croydon. You can reach it on 0300 303 1555 or through its Croydon pages. We can provide respite care at home for a planned break, as a live-in stay or as extra visits if we have the carers.
Croydon Council and paying for care
Thornton Heath is in the London Borough of Croydon. You can request a needs assessment online, or by phone on 020 8726 6500 if the form is not practical. If the council agrees there are eligible needs, a financial assessment decides how much the person pays. Support can come as a direct payment used with a registered agency such as ours. We give our own quote after our assessment. Our Croydon home care page covers the borough-wide picture.

Thornton Heath questions
Questions families ask us about Thornton Heath. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum is still on a ward at Croydon University Hospital. When should I call you?
As soon as the ward starts talking about her going home. That gives us time to assess, check what we can cover and plan around the discharge date. If we are called on the day itself, there may be nothing we can put in place.
He lives in an upstairs flat off the High Street and can barely manage the stairs. Is home care still possible?
Often, yes. We look at the stairs at the assessment. A carer can help with getting ready inside the flat, and the council's occupational therapists can advise on rails, a stairlift or other equipment. If getting out at all is unsafe, we will say so and talk through what would help.
Can a carer take my father to his outpatient appointments at the hospital?
Yes, if it is written into his care plan. From Thornton Heath it is a short bus ride on the 64, 109, 250 or 289, and a live-in carer can go with him on the day.
Do you have carers who live in Thornton Heath?
We cannot promise that. Our only office is in Lewisham. Live-in carers move in with the person they support, and whether we can staff visits depends on who is free when you call.
