Home Care in Sanderstead
Dementia care, personal care and live-in care for people living around Sanderstead village, the station valley, Hamsey Green and the roads beside Kings Wood.
Yes, we provide care at home in Sanderstead, CR2. Because Sanderstead is around an hour from our Lewisham office, we can arrange live-in care here with confidence, while visiting calls depend on whether a carer is available for your times. A free assessment in the home comes first, then a written care plan.
A village on the hill
Sanderstead sits high above South Croydon. The station is at the bottom of a dry valley, and the roads climb from there to the old village, where All Saints' Church, begun in about 1230, faces the pond. Beyond it the houses give way to woodland: Sanderstead Plantation, which takes in the second-highest point in London, and Kings Wood, around 147 acres of public woodland bought for the Green Belt in 1937.
Most homes are interwar and post-war detached houses and semis with front gardens and driveways, built as the railway brought commuters out here. The former manor house, Sanderstead Court, was demolished, and low-rise flats stand on its site.
For care, that means space, which is good news for live-in care, but also gradients. Walking to the shops or the bus can stop being realistic well before someone stops managing indoors, and that is often the point at which isolation creeps in.
Dementia support close to Sanderstead
If someone you love is becoming forgetful, Sanderstead is better placed than many parts of London for help outside the home as well as inside it.
- Getting a diagnosis. The GP refers to the Croydon Memory Service, run by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, for assessment and follow-up.
- A day centre in CR2. Croydon Council runs the Langley Oaks Specialist Centre at 2 Langley Oaks Avenue, South Croydon CR2 8DH, a dementia day centre with 16 places. It is for people living at home alone or with a carer who can walk or stand with help from no more than one person. Places are arranged through the council on 020 8726 6500 and charged after a financial assessment.
- Somewhere to go together. Age UK Croydon runs the Memory Tree Café for Croydon residents with mild to moderate dementia and their carers, with sessions in several parts of the borough, the nearest in Selsdon.
Care at home and a day centre fit together well. A carer can help with getting washed, dressed and ready on centre days, and provide dementia care and company on the others.
Who pays for dementia care at home in Sanderstead?
Sanderstead is in the London Borough of Croydon. You can ask Croydon Council for a needs assessment online, or by phone on 020 8726 6500. If the person has eligible needs, a financial assessment decides what they contribute. A dementia diagnosis alone does not usually mean the NHS pays, although NHS continuing healthcare is worth asking about when needs become complex. We give a quote after our assessment. More on the council route is on our Croydon home care page.
Live-in care in Sanderstead
Most Sanderstead houses have the spare bedroom a live-in carer needs, and with someone living in, the hill between the house and the shops matters far less. Distance from Lewisham stops being a factor too. For a couple, one carer can often support both partners, provided the care fits around the carer's agreed breaks.
Getting about without the car
Sanderstead station is on the Oxted line, with frequent trains to East Croydon. Riddlesdown and Purley Oaks stations are also close. Three bus routes do most of the work:
- 403 from Warlingham and Hamsey Green, past All Saints' Church and Sanderstead station, to central and West Croydon.
- 412 from Purley via Riddlesdown and Sanderstead village to Selsdon and Croydon town centre.
- 359 from Purley, stopping by Purley Hospital, across Sanderstead to Selsdon and Addington Village.
The Sanderstead Permit Zone controls parking near the station; most residential roads are free of restrictions, which helps visiting carers who drive.
When the family carer needs a break. Looking after someone with dementia is relentless. Croydon Council offers carers' assessments in their own right, and Carers First runs the borough's carers service. From us, respite usually means a live-in carer for a week or two, so you can go away knowing someone is in the house.

Sanderstead FAQs
Questions families ask us about Sanderstead. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionCan your carers help Mum get ready for Langley Oaks on her day centre days?
Yes, if we can staff a morning call at the time she needs to be ready, or if she has a live-in carer. Getting washed, dressed, breakfasted and out of the door on time is a common part of a care plan.
Dad walks up to the village every day but is starting to get lost. What can a carer do?
A carer can walk with him, so the routine he values continues safely. Mention it at the assessment and we will build the walk into the plan.
Do you cover Hamsey Green and Riddlesdown as well as Sanderstead village?
Yes, we take enquiries from across the Sanderstead area, including Hamsey Green, Riddlesdown and the roads down towards the station. As elsewhere this far south, live-in care is the most dependable option.
We have not had a dementia diagnosis yet. Can care start anyway?
Yes. Care is based on what the person needs, not on a diagnosis. It is still worth asking the GP about a referral to the Croydon Memory Service, because a diagnosis opens up other support.
