Home Care in Selsdon, Croydon
Support at home in Selsdon's garden-village roads, from the Addington Road shops out to Selsdon Wood, Forestdale and the edge of Addington.
Yes, we can provide home care in Selsdon. Selsdon has no railway station and takes around an hour to reach from our Lewisham office, so live-in care is the service we can offer most dependably, and visiting care depends on carer availability for your times. Call us and we will arrange a free assessment at home, followed by a written care plan.
Can Croydon Council help pay for care in Selsdon?
It can, if the person has eligible needs and their finances qualify. Selsdon is in the London Borough of Croydon, so the first step is a needs assessment from Croydon Council Adult Social Care. Request one online, or ring 020 8726 6500 if the form is difficult. A financial assessment of income and savings follows.
If the council does fund care, ask about a direct payment. The money comes to you, and you choose the provider, which can be us. In Croydon, direct payment holders can get help setting up and managing the payment from Kingston Centre for Independent Living (020 8546 9603), which runs the support service for the borough. Self-funding families can contact us directly; we quote after the assessment. The wider picture, including hospital discharge, is on our Croydon home care page.
A garden village from the 1920s
Until the 1920s most of Selsdon was the Selsdon Park estate, farmland and shooting grounds around a mansion that became the Selsdon Park Hotel. The farmland was sold for building from 1926 as Selsdon Garden Village, and much of what stands today dates from the following decade or two: long roads of semis and bungalows, and along Addington Road, several groups of Art Deco houses from the period.
The shops, cafés and library are strung along Addington Road east of the Farley Road junction, which gives Selsdon a proper centre a frail person might still walk to with company.
Why bungalows make a difference
Selsdon has a good share of bungalows, and for care that matters. A bedroom and bathroom on the same level as the front door removes the biggest daily risk, the stairs, and makes it far easier to bring in a hospital bed, a hoist or a wheelchair. If you are deciding whether a parent can stay in a Selsdon bungalow, the answer is often yes for longer than you expect.
Two-storey semis are another matter, with the usual upstairs bathroom. The assessment looks at both the house and the person, and we can point you to the council's occupational therapy route for equipment and adaptations. Parking is generally easy on Selsdon's long residential roads, which helps carers who drive.
Live-in care and short breaks
For live-in care the carer needs their own bedroom. A three-bedroom semi usually has one; a two-bedroom bungalow works when the second room is free. One carer can support a couple. If you are the one doing the caring, a live-in carer for a week or two is our usual form of respite care in Selsdon.
Buses, trams and the hospital
Without a station, buses carry Selsdon. The 64 is the one to know: it runs from Selsdon through South Croydon, East and West Croydon, then straight to Croydon University Hospital on London Road, where residents are admitted and discharged. The 433 goes from Selsdon Library to East Croydon. The 412 and 359 cross to Sanderstead and Purley, and the 359 stops by Purley War Memorial Hospital, the outpatient site. The nearest trams are at Gravel Hill and Coombe Lane, a bus ride away.
Two good reasons to get out. Selsdon Wood, a National Trust nature reserve of meadows and woodland open since 1936, is on the doorstep for a supported walk. And Age UK Croydon lists a Thursday afternoon session of its Memory Tree Café in Selsdon, for residents with mild to moderate dementia and their carers. A companionship visit can include either.

Common questions about care in Selsdon
Questions families ask us about Selsdon. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionThe council has offered Mum a direct payment. Can she use it to pay you?
Yes. A direct payment can pay a CQC-registered agency such as ours. Kingston Centre for Independent Living supports Croydon direct payment holders with the paperwork.
Dad lives in a bungalow off Addington Road. Is it suitable for a hoist and hospital bed?
Bungalows are usually the easiest homes to fit equipment into. We check room sizes and door widths at the assessment, and the council's occupational therapy service can advise on equipment.
Do you cover Forestdale and Addington as well?
Yes, we take enquiries from Forestdale, Addington and the roads around Selsdon. The same honest rule applies: live-in care we can arrange; visits depend on whether we have a carer for your times.
Mum gets confused on the bus to Croydon University Hospital. Can a carer go with her?
Yes. Escorting someone to hospital appointments can be part of the care plan; give us the date as early as you can so we can staff it.
Who do I contact if I'm unhappy with care services in Croydon?
Raise it with the provider first; with us, that means Jackie, our registered manager. Healthwatch Croydon also takes feedback on local health and care services.
