Home Care in Heston, TW5
Live-in care, personal care, medication support and companionship for older and disabled people in Heston, from the old village around St Leonard's church to the streets off the Great West Road.
Yes, we provide home care in Heston. Live-in care, where a carer moves into the home, is available anywhere in TW5, and visiting care is possible where we have a carer living close enough to cover the calls. Before any care begins, you get a free home assessment and a written care plan.
The old village and the streets around it
Heston is still recognisably a village at its centre. St Leonard's church, with its late-medieval tower (the rest was rebuilt in the 19th century), sits close to the village hall and the war memorial, and that small cluster feels quite separate from Hounslow town centre to the south. Around it, the 20th century filled in the fields: the Great West Road forms the southern edge, the M4 runs about half a mile to the north, and Heston services sits on part of the old aerodrome.
That aerodrome left its mark on the street map. Roads such as Alcock Road, Brabazon Road, Sopwith Road and Wright Road are named after aviators and aircraft makers, and they are typical of the area: interwar and post-war semis and short terraces, most with a front path and a garden, and often a spare bedroom.
What a Heston house means for care
A Heston semi is a good house to receive care in, with a few predictable sticking points.
- The bathroom is upstairs. In most of these houses the only bath is on the first floor. If stairs become unsafe, the usual steps are a stairlift if the staircase suits one, a downstairs shower in the old kitchen extension or garage, or a bed in the front room for a while. The council's occupational therapists can assess for equipment and adaptations.
- There is usually a spare room. That is the one firm requirement for live-in care, so it is possible in most Heston homes without anyone having to move.
- The garden matters. A garden that was once a pleasure can become a worry. Sitting out in it with a carer on a fine afternoon is a perfectly good use of a companionship visit.
Can a carer reach Heston from your Lewisham office?
Not easily, and we would sooner say so now. Heston has no station of its own. Hounslow West and Osterley on the Piccadilly line are each a little over a mile from the village hall (about 1.1 and 1.3 miles), and from Lewisham the journey to either takes well over an hour. That rules out a pattern of short daily visits staffed from south-east London.
What does work is a carer who already lives in or near west London, and whether we have one free for your times is something we check before the assessment, not after. If we cannot staff regular visits reliably, we will tell you, and live-in care becomes the realistic option.
Parking is the easy part. Away from the main roads, most of Heston's residential streets have free on-street parking, so a carer who drives does not need a permit for each visit. That is less true near Hounslow town centre, where controlled parking zones apply.
Live-in care in Heston
For many Heston families this is the more dependable choice. One carer lives in, takes their breaks as agreed in the care plan, and provides personal care, meals, medication support and company through the day. It suits couples, too: one carer can support a husband with dementia while his wife gets lighter help. Uxbridge, where we run one of our supported living homes, is within reach by road if a residential option is ever needed.
A break for whoever does the caring
If a son, daughter or spouse is doing most of the care, they are entitled to ask Hounslow Council for a carer's assessment, which can lead to the council's Short Breaks service. We can also step in privately with a live-in carer for a week or two as respite care, so the person you look after stays at home in Heston while you rest or go away.
How do I get Hounslow Council to assess care needs in Heston?
Contact the council's Adult Social Care First Contact Team on 020 8583 3100, or start an enquiry from the council's request support page. The team decides whether to give advice or arrange a full needs assessment. Our Hounslow home care page covers that route in more detail, along with direct payments and discharge from West Middlesex University Hospital.
How much does home care cost in Heston?
We quote in writing after the free assessment, because the cost depends on how much help is needed and whether visits or live-in care fit best. If the council arranges care, a financial assessment works out what you pay; Hounslow's paying for care guide explains the means test. Where needs are mainly health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may cover the cost. Our paying for care guide sets out both.

Heston: your questions
Questions families ask us about Heston. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum's only bathroom is upstairs and she has stopped using it. What can we do?
In the short term a carer can help with a strip wash downstairs and a commode if needed. For the longer term, ask the council's First Contact Team for an occupational therapy assessment, which looks at stairlifts, rails and a downstairs shower. We plan the care around whatever is decided.
Our spare room is a small box room. Is that enough for a live-in carer?
It can be, if it takes a proper single bed, has somewhere to keep clothes and gives the carer privacy. We look at the room at the assessment and will be straight with you if it will not work.
Do you count the streets north of the Great West Road near Hounslow West as Heston?
Yes. We cover all of TW5, including the area around Hounslow West station, Heston village and the roads up towards the M4. Visiting availability varies by street, so give us the postcode when you call.
Is there somewhere Dad can go during the day as well as having care at home?
Age UK Hounslow runs its Vintage Club at Southville Community Centre in Feltham, a drive away from Heston, for older people who manage their own personal care. Home care can cover the mornings before and the days in between.
