Home Care in Harefield Village, UB9

Live-in care for Harefield's cottages, council houses and detached homes, from Church Hill and the High Street out to Breakspear Road North and the canal.

Yes, we can arrange home care in Harefield, mainly as live-in care, where a carer moves in and supports your relative around the clock with breaks built in. Harefield has no station and is one of the furthest places in London from our Lewisham office, so short daily visits are rarely something we can staff. Call for a free home assessment and we will be honest about what we can cover.

How do you get home care in Harefield with no Tube station?

This is the practical question that shapes everything else. The nearest Underground stations are Uxbridge, Ickenham, Northwood and Moor Park, and the nearest railway stations are Denham and Rickmansworth. Route 331 runs between Uxbridge and Ruislip through the village, and the U9 runs from Uxbridge to Harefield Hospital. For a carer coming from south-east London, that means a journey well over ninety minutes each way before the visit starts.

A live-in carer makes that journey once, at the start of their placement. After that, the carer is in the house: helping with washing and dressing, meals, medication, and any wake-ups in the night. It is the arrangement that works best for a village this far out.

A real village on the edge of London

Harefield sits about seventeen miles from Charing Cross, with Buckinghamshire to the west and Hertfordshire to the north, and it still reads as a village. St Mary the Virgin on Church Hill is its oldest building. Its churchyard holds more than a hundred graves of Australian soldiers from the First World War, when Harefield Park was an Australian military hospital, and an Anzac Day service is still held there each year. The Grand Union Canal and the lakes of the Colne Valley lie just to the west, with Green Belt fields around the edges.

The homes are mixed: old cottages and terraces near the High Street, post-war council houses, and larger detached houses on the outskirts. Cottages can have narrow, twisting stairs and small rooms that make a hoist or a hospital bed awkward. The council houses usually have a straight staircase and a second bedroom, which suits live-in care. At the assessment we look at the room the carer would sleep in, the bathroom and the way in and out of the house.

Coming home after Harefield Hospital

Harefield Hospital on Hill End Road is a specialist heart and lung hospital, now part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. People come here for cardiac surgery and transplants from well beyond Hillingdon, so a villager recovering from heart surgery may be on the same ward as someone from the south coast. Recovery at home after major heart or lung surgery often means weeks of help with washing, getting up safely and keeping to a medication routine. Tell the ward early that you are arranging care, and see our hospital discharge support page. For general emergencies and most other admissions, residents go to Hillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge.

Not every heart patient needs live-in care. Some need a few weeks of support and then very little. We plan for the recovery you are told to expect and review it as things improve, so the care can scale down when it is no longer needed.

Breaks for the family carer

A spouse or son or daughter doing the caring can ask Hillingdon for a carer's assessment through the council's online carer's assessment form. Carers Trust Hillingdon, on Uxbridge High Street, runs the borough's carer support service and advises on respite. Harefield Library hosts one of the council's dementia groups, and Age UK Hillingdon, Harrow and Brent runs a dementia sitting service. For a longer break, a live-in carer can step in for respite care while the family carer goes away.

The Hillingdon council route

Needs assessments come from Hillingdon Social Care Direct: 01895 556633, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, or the online application form. If the council funds care, it can pay it as a direct payment on a pre-paid card that can be used with a provider you choose. If you are paying yourself, we give a written quote after our assessment. Our Hillingdon home care page explains the rest of the borough's process.

Harefield FAQs

Harefield FAQs

Questions families ask us about Harefield. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad lives in a cottage near the High Street with a very narrow staircase. Can a live-in carer still work there?

Often, yes, as long as there's a bedroom for the carer. If the stairs are no longer safe for your father, the usual answer is to set up a bed and toilet downstairs, and the council's occupational therapist can advise on equipment.

My husband is having heart surgery at Harefield Hospital. Can we book care before he goes in?

Yes, and it's better to. We can assess at home in advance, plan for the recovery the surgical team expects, and adjust once he is discharged.

Can a carer get Mum to appointments in Uxbridge without a car?

Yes, by bus. The 331 and U9 both run to Uxbridge, where the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines start and Hillingdon Hospital is a short ride further. A live-in carer can go with her.

Mum has dementia and won't accept strangers. How would a live-in carer start?

Slowly, with family present at first and a routine built around what she already does. Our dementia care page explains our approach. Hillingdon's Admiral Nurse team (01895 556480) also supports families of people with dementia.
