Home Care in Ickenham, UB10
Live-in care, and visiting care where a carer is free, for the 1920s and 1930s houses and bungalows between the village pump, Swakeleys Road and Long Lane.
Yes, we provide home care in Ickenham, and live-in care is the service we can offer most reliably here. Ickenham is a long journey from our Lewisham office, so regular visits depend on having a carer free at the times you need; ask us and we will tell you straight. Every arrangement starts with a free home assessment by Jackie, our registered manager, and a written care plan.
Pump, pond and the Swakeleys estate
Ickenham still has the feel of the village it was. The pump on the green was sunk in 1866, paid for by Charlotte Gell, and the pond beside it was dug at the same time. Most of what surrounds them came later: in 1922 a large part of the Swakeleys estate was auctioned for building, and roads such as Swakeleys Drive, Warren Road, Court Road, Thornhill Road and The Avenue filled with houses for people travelling in on the Metropolitan line. The Ickenham Residents' Association dates from 1924, and the place has kept its settled, owner-occupied character.
That history explains the homes we see. Detached and semi-detached houses from the interwar years, post-war infill and a good number of bungalows, nearly all with gardens and a second or third bedroom. They are harder to manage once stairs become a risk, because the only bathroom is usually upstairs.
Can a home carer visit every day in Ickenham?
Sometimes, but we won't promise it before we know who is available. From Lewisham, the trip out on the Metropolitan or Piccadilly line takes ninety minutes or more each way, so a pattern of three or four short visits a day is the hardest thing for us to staff here. Longer visits, such as a morning of personal care and home help, or a sit-in so a husband or wife can get out, are easier to arrange. When daily care is clearly needed, a live-in carer usually works better.
Our Uxbridge home is close by. One of our three supported living homes is in Uxbridge, typically 10 to 25 minutes from Ickenham by car or bus. It takes permanent and short respite stays. See supported living in Uxbridge for what it offers.
Asking Hillingdon Council for help first
Ickenham is in the London Borough of Hillingdon, so a needs assessment comes from Hillingdon Social Care Direct. Ring 01895 556633 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm) or start the council's apply for care and support form online. If your parent can't apply themselves, you can refer them with their consent. If the council agrees a personal budget, it can be paid as a direct payment on a pre-paid card, and you can use it with a provider you choose. Our Hillingdon home care page covers the full borough route, including hospital discharge.
Paying privately? We quote in writing after the assessment. There is no standard price because no two care plans are the same.
Ickenham station, West Ruislip and the U1, U10 and 278
Ickenham station, on the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines, is the obvious way in. West Ruislip, on the Ruislip border, adds the Central line and Chiltern trains. Bus routes U1, U10 and 278 run through the area, which matters for appointments: Uxbridge and Hillingdon Hospital, the borough's main discharge point, are only a few minutes away. Most residential roads are free to park on. Near stations, check whether your road is in a Parking Management Scheme; if it is, the council issues carers' permits through its parking permits service.
Live-in care in an Ickenham house
A live-in carer needs their own bedroom, and most Ickenham homes have one. For a couple, one carer can provide full care for one partner and lighter help for the other. In a bungalow, a hoist, a profiling bed and a wet room usually fit without much rearranging. In a two-storey semi, the plan often brings everything down to the ground floor, and the council's occupational therapist can look at stairlifts and adaptations.
Respite for the partner who does the caring
The person doing most of the caring can ask for a carer's assessment of their own. Carers Trust Hillingdon, at 126 High Street in Uxbridge (01895 811206), runs the borough's carer support service and is the place to start for advice on breaks. Our live-in carers can also cover a week or two of respite care while the family carer has a rest or a holiday.

Ickenham questions
Questions families ask us about Ickenham. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionDad's bungalow is off Long Lane. Is that easier to set up than a house?
Usually, yes. With everything on one level, there's no stairs question, and equipment such as a hoist or profiling bed is simpler to fit. We check doorway widths and the bathroom at the assessment.
Mum is coming home from Hillingdon Hospital. When should we call?
While the ward is still planning discharge, not on the day. That gives us time to assess and to tell you honestly whether we can cover visits or whether live-in care is the better route. Our hospital discharge support page explains what we do.
Does Ickenham count as Ruislip or Uxbridge for the council?
It makes no difference: all three are in the London Borough of Hillingdon, so Hillingdon Social Care Direct handles the assessment whichever postal address you have.
Could someone stay at your Uxbridge home for a fortnight while we have a break?
It is possible if there is space and the home is the right fit for their needs. Call to ask about availability, or read about our Uxbridge home first.
Can a carer take Mum to the village shops or St Giles' on a Sunday?
Yes. Outings like these can be written into the care plan as companionship time, and they're easy to fit into a live-in carer's day.
