Home Care in Harlington, UB3

Care at home in the old village between the M4 and Heathrow: the High Street, the roads around St Peter and St Paul's, and the streets off Station Road down to the Bath Road.

Yes, we can arrange care at home in Harlington. A live-in carer who moves into the house is the arrangement we can always offer here; visiting care is possible where we have a carer who can reach UB3 reliably, because Harlington sits at the western end of the Elizabeth line, a long way from our Lewisham office. Either way, it starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.

Can you send visiting carers to Harlington, and how often?

Harlington is one of the more reachable parts of Hillingdon for us, which is not the same as close. From Lewisham the DLR and the Elizabeth line reach Hayes and Harlington station in roughly an hour, and the village is then a bus ride or a twenty-minute walk south down Station Road, over the M4. A weekly shopping visit is a very different proposition from three personal care calls a day. Tell us the postcode and the pattern you need, and we will say plainly whether we can staff it; if not, we will talk you through live-in care. We have no office or local team in Hillingdon.

A village under the flight path

Walk the High Street and Harlington still reads as a village. The Grade I listed church of St Peter and St Paul dates from the twelfth century, with the Harlington Yew in its churchyard and cottages nearby. Most homes, though, are interwar semis and terraces, including the roads behind Manor Parade, built where Manor Farm stood, plus some council housing.

Two things shape care here. One is stairs: a 1930s semi usually has a narrow staircase and its only bathroom upstairs, so we look early at a downstairs bed, a stairlift or an occupational therapy referral. The other is the aircraft. Heathrow's northern runway lies just beyond the Bath Road, and someone living with dementia may find the noise tiring, so carers plan around it with quieter rooms and a steady routine.

The hospice is round the corner. Harlington Hospice has its home at Lansdowne House on St Peter's Way, where its day centre and therapy rooms are based, and it runs a 24/7 clinical advice line for Hillingdon on 020 3824 1268. Its inpatient unit is Michael Sobell House at Mount Vernon Hospital. At the end of life we work alongside the hospice and district nurses; see our palliative care page and the Harlington Hospice website.

Buses, the station and the GP

  • Route 90 runs from Hayes and Harlington station down Station Road and along Harlington High Street (the stop at Sipson Lane), then on to Hatton Cross for the Piccadilly line and to Feltham.
  • Route U5 leaves from Hayes and Harlington station and goes via West Drayton and Yiewsley to Hillingdon Hospital and Uxbridge: the bus a family member will use for hospital visits.
  • The village GP is Glendale Medical Centre at 155 High Street (UB3 5DA). The GP is the route to district nursing for someone housebound.

How do I get help from Hillingdon Council if I live in Harlington?

Through Hillingdon Social Care Direct: the online apply for care and support form, or 01895 556633 on weekdays, 9am to 5pm. The council assesses needs, then finances, and may offer a direct payment on a pre-paid card. The full route is on our Hillingdon home care page and the council's applying for social care page. If you pay privately, we quote in writing after the assessment.

Harlington residents are usually discharged from Hillingdon Hospital on Pield Heath Road, though some are treated at West Middlesex in Isleworth. Ring us while the discharge is still being planned; see hospital discharge support.

Live-in care in a Harlington house

A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own, and most Harlington semis have a box room or second bedroom that will do. One carer can support a couple who want to stay together at home, with daily breaks and time off built into the care plan. More on our live-in care in Hillingdon page.

A break for whoever does the caring

A family carer can ask the council for a carer's assessment through its online form, which can lead to funded respite, and Carers Trust Hillingdon on Uxbridge High Street offers advice and benefits checks. We can cover a short live-in stay while they get away; see respite care in Hillingdon.

Harlington questions

Questions families ask us about Harlington. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum has outpatient appointments at Hillingdon Hospital. How would a carer get her there without a car?

The 90 or the 278 from the High Street to Hayes and Harlington station, then the U5, which runs via West Drayton and Yiewsley to Hillingdon Hospital. It is a long trip by bus, so a carer going with her helps; we can plan it into the care at the assessment.

Dad is attending the day hospice at Lansdowne House. Can a carer work around that?

Yes. A carer can get him ready on hospice days and be there when he gets back, fitting around the hospice team.

The planes keep my husband awake and he has dementia. Can a carer help with nights?

A live-in carer is in the house overnight and can settle him if he wakes, but needs their own sleep, so this is not a waking-night service. We will look at his bedroom and routine at the assessment.

She's being discharged from West Middlesex, not Hillingdon Hospital. Does that change anything?

Only in who the ward deals with. West Middlesex, in Isleworth, is run by Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, but because she lives in Harlington the discharge team has to work with Hillingdon Council, not Hounslow. Check the paperwork lists her Harlington address and GP, then ring us with the expected date.
