Home Care in Kingsbury

Live-in care, respite and home support for older and disabled adults in NW9, from Kingsbury Circle and Kingsbury Road to Roe Green, Buck Lane and the edge of Fryent Country Park.

Yes, we provide home care in Kingsbury, mainly as live-in care. A carer moves into the home, so the distance from our Lewisham office doesn't matter. Short visiting packages are possible only when we have a carer free who can make the journey, so ask and we will give you a straight answer after a free home assessment.

Is live-in care the realistic option in Kingsbury?

Usually, yes. Kingsbury is at the north end of Brent, near the top of the Jubilee line, and roughly 60 to 70 minutes from SE13. That is a long way for a carer to travel for a short morning call. Live-in care avoids the problem completely: one carer lives with the person, helps with washing, dressing, meals and medication, and is there through the day and evening. The carer has proper breaks, which we plan with you.

The housing helps. Most of Kingsbury was built in the 1920s and 1930s as semis and short terraces, and many have a third bedroom or a box room upstairs that suits a live-in carer.

Semis, cottages and castle flats

Kingsbury has some of the most distinctive interwar housing in London, and each type raises its own questions:

  • Standard 1930s semis along and off Kingsbury Road and Church Lane. A front room can become a downstairs bedroom, and many have space for a ground-floor shower room if Brent's occupational therapists recommend one.
  • Roe Green Village, the garden suburb begun during the First World War for workers at the Aircraft Manufacturing Company. It has been a conservation area since 1968, so changes to the outside of a house, such as a ramp or a new door, may need planning advice first.
  • The Trobridge houses and flats on Buck Lane and Slough Lane, by the local architect Ernest Trobridge. They include timbered cottages and the castle-style blocks Highfort Court and Whitecastle Mansions. They are lovely to live in, but staircases and doorways can be narrow, so we check hoist and wheelchair access carefully.
  • Bungalows, where you find them, are the easiest homes to care in, with everything on one level.

Caring for a couple. In a Kingsbury semi with a spare room, one live-in carer can give full personal care to one partner and lighter help to the other, which keeps them together at home. See live-in care.

Check which council you are under

NW9 is not only Kingsbury. The postcode also covers Colindale and West Hendon, which are in Barnet, and Kingsbury itself runs up to the Harrow border. If the council tax bill comes from Brent, the route is Brent Adult Social Care: start with the online self-assessment or call 020 8937 4300, and Brent will arrange a free care needs assessment by phone, online or at home. If needs are eligible, a financial assessment follows, and any council funding can be taken as a direct payment to pay an agency. Our Brent home care page has the detail.

On cost, we do not publish prices. We give a written quote after the assessment, and our guide to paying for care explains the means test and NHS Continuing Healthcare.

After a stay at Northwick Park

Most Kingsbury residents are treated at Northwick Park Hospital on Watford Road, a short drive west. If a parent is likely to come home needing help, call us while the ward is planning the discharge. A live-in carer can be in place when they arrive home. Read more about hospital discharge support.

Respite for Kingsbury carers

If you are the one doing the caring, a live-in carer can cover a week or two so you can rest or travel; see respite care. Ask Brent for a carer's assessment through Brent Carers Centre, which can lead to council-arranged respite and an emergency plan.

Out and about

Getting out keeps people well. Kingsbury station (Jubilee line) and the shops at Kingsbury Circle are the local hub, and the 79, 83, 183, 204, 302 and 324 buses serve the area. Fryent Country Park, with its fields, woods and pond, sits on the eastern edge, and a gentle walk there or along the parade is the kind of outing a carer can build into the day.

Kingsbury FAQs

Questions families ask us about Kingsbury. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Can you do a daily morning visit in Kingsbury?

Only if we have a carer free who can reliably make the journey, which in north Brent is not always the case. We will tell you before anything is agreed. If daily visits are not workable, live-in care usually is.

Our house is in Roe Green Village. Can we still fit a ramp or rails?

Indoor rails and equipment are rarely a problem. Because Roe Green Village is a conservation area, check with Brent's planning team before changing the outside of the house. Brent's occupational therapists can advise on what is needed.

My parents both need some help. Do we need two carers?

Often not. One live-in carer can support a couple when one needs more care than the other. If both need two-person help, such as hoisting, we will say so at the assessment and plan accordingly.

Dad keeps a vegetarian diet for religious reasons. Will the carer respect that?

Yes. Diet, faith and daily routine all go into the written care plan, and the carer follows it. Tell us about anything else that matters to him, such as visits to the mandir or prayer times.

Our address is NW9 but we pay council tax to Barnet. Does that change anything?

Our care is the same. The council route changes: assessment, funding and carers' support go through Barnet, not Brent.
