Home Care in Hook, KT9 and KT6
Live-in care first, respite for family carers, and visiting care only where we have someone close by, for the bungalows and semis along Hook Road.
Yes, we can provide care at home in Hook, and the option we can rely on here is a live-in carer, which we can arrange on any street in KT9 or KT6. Hook is a long way from our Lewisham office and has no station, so regular visits are only possible if we have a carer living nearby; we will check and tell you honestly. Whatever you choose, Jackie, our registered manager, does a free assessment at home first.
Can a carer get to Hook when there is no station?
Hook has no railway station of its own. The nearest are Chessington North, within walking distance to the east, and Tolworth and Surbiton further north, all on South Western Railway. Most journeys into Hook end on a bus, and almost every route stops at the same place: Hook Parade on Hook Road. The 71, 465, 467, K2 and K4 all call there.
From Lewisham, a carer would need a train into Waterloo, a second train out to Surbiton or Chessington North, and then a bus or a walk. That is too long and too fragile for a 7.30am call to get someone out of bed, so we don't offer visiting care in Hook unless a carer lives close. Parking is generally uncontrolled, which helps carers who drive.
Two hospitals by bus from Hook Parade. The K2 and K4 run to Kingston Hospital, the borough's main acute hospital. The 467 runs the other way, to Epsom Hospital, which some people in this corner of the borough are also referred to.
Bungalows and semis either side of Hook Road
Hook was a village on the old road from Kingston to Dorking. A few older buildings survive, such as 435 Hook Road, a listed house dated 1669, and St Paul's Church, where the aviator Harry Hawker is buried. Most homes, though, are interwar semis and bungalows, with some post-war flats. The former RAF Chessington site, later used as a hospital, was redeveloped for housing in the 1990s.
The bungalows are an advantage. Everything is on one floor, so there are no stairs to manage, and a hoist, a profiling bed or a wheelchair is easier to fit. In a semi, the usual pattern is a downstairs bedroom once the stairs get too much, or a stairlift if the stairs are straight.
Your GP: Hook Surgery at the Merritt Medical Centre
Hook Surgery is at the Merritt Medical Centre, Merritt Gardens, Chessington KT9 2GY, which it shares with Chessington Park Surgery. Tell us about any district nurse visits so the care plan fits around them. Medication prescribed by the surgery can be prompted, given and recorded by a carer as part of medication support.
Live-in care in Hook
A live-in carer lives in the home, so the lack of a station doesn't matter. They need a bedroom of their own, which most Hook semis and two-bedroom bungalows have, and a daily break written into the plan.
Respite for family carers
Kingston Carers' Network, in neighbouring Tolworth at 418 Ewell Road, carries out carer's assessments for the council (020 3031 2757). The council also asks carers to plan backup care in case they suddenly can't cope, and offers a free Carer's Emergency Alert Card. We can provide a live-in carer for a planned break: see respite care in Kingston.
How much does home care cost in Hook?
We don't publish prices. After the assessment you get a written quote for exactly the care agreed, live-in or visiting.
If you want council help, Kingston Council assesses care needs first (request online or call 020 8547 5005) and then means-tests income and savings to work out what the person pays; its paying for social care pages explain how. If someone's needs are mainly health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may cover the cost instead. Our Kingston home care page has more on direct payments and the council route.

Hook: what people ask
Questions families ask us about Hook. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionWhy can't you just send a visiting carer to Hook every morning?
Because an early call has to happen on time every day, and from south-east London that means two trains and a bus. If we have a carer who lives nearby, we can. If we don't, we would rather tell you now than let you down later, and talk about live-in care instead.
Mum lives in a bungalow. Does that make care easier?
Usually, yes. With no stairs, washing, toileting and getting to bed all happen on one level, and equipment such as a hoist or profiling bed is simpler to fit. We still check the bathroom, doorways and the step at the front door.
Dad was treated at Epsom Hospital, not Kingston. Does that change anything?
Not for us. Epsom Hospital is in Surrey, but his social care still comes from Kingston Council because he lives in the borough. Ask the ward to involve Kingston's Adult Social Care if he needs support at home.
Is Hook in Chessington or Surbiton?
Hook addresses can be Chessington (KT9) or Surbiton (KT6), depending on the street. Both are in the Royal Borough of Kingston and we cover both.
