Home Care in Surbiton, KT5 and KT6
Visiting care and live-in care in the villas, conversions and mansion flats around Surbiton station, Victoria Road, Brighton Road and the riverside at Queen's Promenade.
Yes, we provide home care in Surbiton. Visiting care here depends on which carers we have free at the times you need, so we check that before agreeing to anything, and live-in care we can arrange on any street in KT5 or KT6. It starts with a free home assessment by Jackie, our registered manager, and a written care plan.
Can a carer get to Surbiton from Lewisham?
Surbiton is the easiest part of the Royal Borough of Kingston for us to reach. The town grew up around its railway station in the 1840s, and it is still a commuter town: South Western Railway runs fast trains between Surbiton and Waterloo, so the journey from our office on Lewisham High Street goes by train to Waterloo and then straight out. It is still a long way, though, and we have no office or team base in Kingston. A morning call to help someone wash and dress has to arrive on time every day, so we only take on a visiting package here once we know a carer can cover it reliably.
Locally, the K1 bus links Surbiton station with Tolworth and New Malden, and the 71 and 465 run through Surbiton to Hook and Chessington in one direction and Kingston town centre in the other.
Upper-floor flats and the stairs
Surbiton's housing is mostly Victorian and Edwardian: large villas and terraces between the station, Surbiton Hill and the river, many of them split into flats, plus mansion blocks near the station and the Thames. Further from the centre, towards Berrylands and Tolworth, the streets turn into interwar houses.
The converted villas are the hardest homes for care. A first- or second-floor flat up a shared staircase, with no lift and a small bathroom, makes a hoist, a level-access shower or simply getting a wheelchair outside very difficult. At the assessment we look at the stairs, the bathroom and how a carer gets in, and if equipment or adaptations would help we will suggest asking Kingston Council for an occupational therapy assessment.
Check the parking before the first visit. The streets near Surbiton station and the shops are in controlled zones. If you need regular care, Kingston Council sells a carer permit so a carer can park outside your home in the zones it covers, and in some zones you can buy visitor vouchers by the hour or day. Look up your road first, because not every scheme applies everywhere.
Surbiton Health Centre
Surbiton Health Centre is on Ewell Road (KT6 6EZ), and the 281 bus stops outside it. It houses NHS community clinics and a GP practice, Central Surgery. If your relative is registered there, the GP practice is a useful contact when community nursing or equipment needs to be organised alongside home care. If they are registered elsewhere, nothing changes: we work with whichever surgery they use.
Getting council help in Surbiton
Surbiton is part of the Royal Borough of Kingston, so care needs assessments come from Kingston's Adult Social Care team. You can request one through the council's online form, by phoning 020 8547 5005 or by emailing adults@kingston.gov.uk. Our Kingston home care page explains the means test, direct payments, and the free reablement offered after a stay in Kingston Hospital.
Live-in care in a Surbiton flat
A live-in carer needs their own bedroom. Many of the larger mansion flats and the houses further out have one, but a one-bedroom conversion usually does not. If the flat is too small for live-in care, a pattern of visits through the day is the more realistic plan, and we will tell you that plainly.

Surbiton questions
Questions families ask us about Surbiton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionDad lives on the second floor of a converted villa off Surbiton Hill. Is visiting care realistic?
Often, yes, as long as he can still manage the stairs safely with help. If he can't, the care plan has to deal with that first, through equipment, an occupational therapist's advice or a frank talk about whether the flat still works for him.
Which postcodes count as Surbiton?
Surbiton is split between KT5 and KT6. We cover both, from the riverside and Surbiton Hill out towards Berrylands and Tolworth.
Mum's flat is near the station. Will a carer be able to park?
Near the station, only if the household sorts out parking. The resident who needs care can apply to Kingston Council for a carer permit if the road is in a zone it covers. Some carers come by train or bus anyway, so tell us about parking at the assessment and we will plan around it.
Can a carer take her for a walk along the river?
Yes. A slow walk along Queen's Promenade, or a coffee on Victoria Road, is exactly what a companionship visit is for. We will plan the route around how far she can comfortably go.
