Home Care in Tolworth

Help at home for older and disabled people, and a break for the family carers who support them, in the interwar streets between Tolworth Broadway, Ewell Road and the Hogsmill.

Yes, we can provide home care in Tolworth, in KT5 and KT6. Live-in care is available anywhere in the area. Visiting care depends on carer availability, because our office is in Lewisham, so call and we will tell you whether we can staff the visits you need. Jackie, our registered manager, does a free assessment at home first and writes the care plan with you.

If you are the family carer, start on Ewell Road

Tolworth has the borough's carers' centre. Kingston Carers' Network is at 418 Ewell Road (KT6 7HF, 020 3031 2757) and carries out carer's assessments for Kingston Council. Its online referral form is the quickest way in. The council says to expect the assessment to take roughly 8 to 12 weeks, so it is worth applying before you reach breaking point.

An eligible carer can get council-funded relief care, meaning an agency care worker for up to 72 hours a year, and a one-off discretionary payment that is not means-tested. Kingston Carers' Network also runs support groups and counselling. None of this depends on the person you care for already having council services.

Streets and houses

Tolworth grew up around the Broadway, where Ewell Road meets the A3 at the roundabout under Tolworth Tower. Most of the housing is interwar semis and terraces with gardens, with some 1960s and 1970s flats around the Broadway and newer blocks on redevelopment sites. Tolworth Court Farm and the Hogsmill river are close by.

For care, the semis are straightforward: room for a stairlift or a bed downstairs, a front door at street level, and usually a third bedroom that a live-in carer can use. The flats above the Broadway shops are harder. Ask the building manager about the lift and access before the first visit.

Station, buses and parking

Tolworth station is on South Western Railway's Chessington branch. The K1 bus connects Tolworth Tower and the Broadway with Surbiton, Malden Manor and New Malden, and it stops at Tolworth Hospital. The 281 runs up Ewell Road past Surbiton Health Centre to Kingston, and the 406 goes to Kingston one way and Epsom the other. Parking is largely uncontrolled away from the Broadway, which helps a carer who drives.

Tolworth Hospital is not an A&E. The hospital on Red Lion Road is the borough's mental health site, run by South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust. After a physical illness or a fall, discharge is normally from Kingston Hospital. If someone is coming home after a mental health admission, tell us at the assessment so the care plan reflects it.

How much does home care cost in Tolworth?

We don't publish prices. After the assessment we give you a written quote based on the number of visits, when they happen and what the carer does during them. If Kingston Council assesses the person as eligible, it means-tests their income and savings to work out their contribution, and the council's paying for social care pages explain how. Council funding can be paid as a direct payment and used with an agency you choose. Our Kingston home care page covers how to ask for the needs assessment and what reablement offers.

Respite when you need more than relief care

Seventy-two hours a year doesn't stretch far. If you need a fortnight away or have to go into hospital yourself, we can arrange a live-in carer for the period or step up visits, alongside anything the council funds. See respite care.

Questions families ask us about Tolworth. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Can the council's 72 hours of relief care be provided by you?

Relief care is arranged through the council after your carer's assessment, so ask Kingston Carers' Network or the council how it can be used. If you want extra cover on top, we can arrange that privately after our own assessment.

My wife has dementia and I can only get out while someone sits with her. What would help?

A sit-in visit lets you go out knowing she has company and help if she needs it. Kingston Carers' Network's groups are worth trying too, and the council's partner directory lists dementia-friendly activities you could go to together.

Mum is coming home from Tolworth Hospital. Can you help?

Yes, with personal care, medication prompts and company at home. Ask her care team about the discharge plan and any aftercare she is entitled to, and share it with us so the care fits around it.

We live in a flat above the Broadway shops. Is that a problem?

Not in itself. We need to know about the stairs or the lift, the entry system and where a carer can stop. For live-in care the flat also needs a spare bedroom.

Is the Tolworth side of Surbiton covered too?

Yes. Tolworth runs into Surbiton along Ewell Road, and we cover the whole of KT5 and KT6, as well as Hook and Berrylands next door.
