Home Care in St Margarets, Twickenham TW1

Live-in care, respite and, where a carer is free, visiting care for older people in the streets between the Thames, the River Crane and Marble Hill.

Yes, we provide home care in St Margarets. St Margarets is a long way from our Lewisham office, so what we can offer most reliably here is live-in care, with a carer living in the home, and respite; visiting care is possible only when we have a carer available nearby at the times you need. Everything starts with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.

An early garden suburb with tall houses

St Margarets takes its name from St Margaret's House, a country house that stood here until 1853. The estate laid out on its land in 1854 was one of the first garden suburbs, and it still shapes the area: Victorian and Edwardian family houses on roads such as Ailsa Road, Kilmorey Gardens and Sandycoombe Road, with some of the larger houses sharing private communal gardens. Crown Road and the parade by the station keep the shops close.

Houses like these are generous but vertical. Bedrooms are upstairs, the stairs are steep and the only bathroom is often on the first floor. At the assessment we look at whether a bed should come downstairs for a while, whether a stairlift or level-access shower is worth asking the council's occupational therapists about, and how a carer can help safely with washing in the bathroom you actually have.

Can you send visiting carers to St Margarets from Lewisham?

Sometimes, but we will not pretend it is easy. A carer travelling from south-east London needs well over an hour each way, changing at Waterloo for a South Western Railway train to St Margarets station, which runs towards Richmond and Waterloo in one direction and Twickenham and Teddington in the other. The 110 and H37 buses stop by the station. Short daily visits only work when we have a carer who lives closer, so please ask and we will tell you honestly what we can cover.

Live-in care avoids that problem entirely. Once the carer has moved in, the distance from Lewisham stops mattering.

Match days change everything. St Margarets sits next to Twickenham Stadium, and on event days extra parking controls and road closures apply on top of the normal controlled parking zone. Any carer who drives, and any family member visiting, should check the event calendar. A carer who needs to park in a specific zone during restricted hours can apply for Richmond's operational parking permit.

Live-in care in a St Margarets home

Many St Margarets houses have the one thing live-in care needs: a spare bedroom for the carer. One carer can support a couple, so a husband and wife can stay together at home even when only one of them needs personal care. The carer needs their daily break, and we plan cover for it with you.

Coming home from West Middlesex

The nearest A&E is West Middlesex University Hospital in Isleworth, just across the River Crane in Hounslow. That does not change who arranges social care: for a St Margarets address it is Richmond. Before discharge the ward can involve Richmond Adult Social Care, and some patients go first to rehabilitation beds at Teddington Memorial Hospital. If you want private care arranged for the first days home, tell us as soon as a date is discussed. Our hospital discharge support page explains how this works.

Help from Richmond Council

Anyone can ask for a free Care Act needs assessment through Richmond's adult social care referral page, or by phoning Adult Social Care on 020 8891 7971 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). If the council agrees your relative has eligible needs, a financial assessment follows, and any funding can be paid as a direct payment and used with an agency like ours. Our Richmond upon Thames home care page covers the whole route.

Breaks for the family carer

Richmond Carers Centre is close by, on Briar Road off Twickenham Green, and Age UK Richmond's Twickenham Wellbeing Centre on Arragon Road runs weekday activities. For a proper break we can provide a live-in carer for a week or two. We also run a supported living home in Whitton, a short trip from St Margarets, which takes respite stays as well as permanent residents. More options are on our respite care page.

St Margarets questions

Questions families ask us about St Margarets. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad's bathroom is upstairs and he can't manage the stairs any more. What happens?

We plan around the house as it is. That might mean a strip wash downstairs for now, a commode, and asking Richmond's occupational therapy service about a stairlift or a downstairs shower. We will talk it through at the assessment.

Will a match at Twickenham stop the carer getting to us?

A live-in carer is already in the house, so no. For any visits we plan around the event calendar, because roads and parking near the stadium are restricted on those days.

Mum was in West Middlesex. Is her care Hounslow's responsibility?

No. The hospital is in Hounslow, but social care follows her home address, so a St Margarets resident goes through Richmond Adult Social Care.

Could he stay at your Whitton home while we go away?

Possibly. Our Whitton supported living home offers respite stays as well as permanent places. Call us to talk about his needs and availability, and see our supported living page.
