Supported Living for Haringey Residents
Yes, a Haringey resident can move into one of our supported living homes, but none of them is in Haringey. They are in Whitton (Twickenham), Kingston upon Thames and Uxbridge, and a placement is agreed with the person's Haringey social worker after a Care Act assessment. Uxbridge is the nearest from most of the borough: it is at the end of the Piccadilly line that runs through Wood Green, Turnpike Lane and Bounds Green.
Who in Haringey decides on supported living?
Haringey Council funds supported living only after a Care Act assessment. Its supported living page says it is for adults who live in Haringey or have a Haringey GP, have eligible needs (or can pay for their own support), and can pay the rent or claim Housing Benefit. Which team assesses depends on the person.
A learning disability: HLDP
The Haringey Learning Disabilities Partnership (HLDP) is a joint council and NHS team that does the social care assessment and also provides NHS services such as community nursing and speech and language therapy. Call 020 8489 1384 or email hldp@haringey.gov.uk.
A mental health need
If the person is under a community mental health team at North London NHS Foundation Trust, which runs St Ann's Hospital in N15, ask their care coordinator to raise supported accommodation.
Anyone else
Contact Haringey Adult Social Care on 020 8489 1400 (press 1, then the option for the area you live in), or use the council's Ask us about care and support form. The CQC's 2025 assessment of Haringey found people waiting for assessments, so ask early.
A teenager with an EHCP
Under the Care Act, the council must carry out a transition assessment before 18 for a young person who is likely to need care as an adult, where that would be of significant benefit to them. Ask at each annual EHCP review whether adult services are involved yet.
Ask about Haringey's own options too. The council lists local schemes for people with a learning disability or a mental health need, Extra Care for people aged 55 and over, and Shared Lives Haringey, where someone lives with a trained carer. If the person's family and friends are all in Tottenham or Wood Green, a local option may suit them better.
If Haringey places someone in Uxbridge, does Haringey still pay?
Usually yes. Under section 39 of the Care Act, someone a council places in supported living in another area is normally treated as still ordinarily resident in the council that placed them. Chapter 19 of the Care and Support Statutory Guidance explains the rules. Haringey would keep funding and reviewing the support.
Some things do change. Housing Benefit is claimed from the council where you live, so after a move to Uxbridge the claim goes to Hillingdon (Richmond for Whitton, Kingston for Kingston). The person would normally register with a local GP, and HLDP's NHS services would hand over to the local learning disability team. Ask the social worker for a written handover plan.
How much does supported living cost for a Haringey resident?
If the person has eligible needs, Haringey pays for the support, then does a financial assessment to decide whether they contribute. The person pays the rent, often through Housing Benefit, plus their share of the bills, their food and personal spending. Someone whose needs are mainly health needs may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare.
Haringey also offers direct payments for people who want to arrange their own support. The council's Direct Payment Support Team is on 020 8489 8456. We quote only after we have assessed the person. Our guide to paying for care covers the routes.
From N17 or N10 to our homes
All three homes are in west and south-west London. Rough door-to-door times:
- Uxbridge: about 75 to 85 minutes on the Piccadilly line from Bounds Green, Wood Green, Turnpike Lane or Manor House, with no change. Some trains go to Heathrow, so check the destination. From Tottenham, take the Victoria line to Finsbury Park first. By car it is usually 45 to 60 minutes along the North Circular and the A40.
- Whitton: about 80 to 90 minutes. From South Tottenham, Harringay Green Lanes or Crouch Hill, take the Overground Suffragette line to Gospel Oak and change to the Mildmay line for Richmond, then a South Western Railway train to Whitton.
- Kingston upon Thames: about 80 to 90 minutes, on the same route to Richmond and then a bus to Kingston.
From Muswell Hill or Crouch End, which have no station, add a bus at the start.
The tenancy and the care are separate
In supported living, the person has a tenancy or licence with a landlord, which gives them rights over their home. Their care comes from a CQC-registered provider under a care plan, so in principle they can change their support without losing their home. JNP Sidona is registered for personal care and has not yet been inspected, so it has no rating. Ask us how this works at the home you are considering; the homes are described on our supported living page.
What to ask any provider, including us
- Who is the landlord, and is the agreement a tenancy or a licence?
- How many people share the house, and does the person get a say when someone new moves in?
- What help is there at night?
- How will staff help the person stay in touch with family and friends back in Haringey?
- Can the person try a short respite stay before committing?

Haringey FAQs
Questions from Haringey families
Questions families ask us about Haringey. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy daughter is under HLDP. Who should I speak to first, them or you?
Her HLDP social worker first, because Haringey has to agree and fund any placement. You can call us at the same time to ask whether there is space, so you can name a specific option at the review.
We live in Bounds Green. Is the address in Haringey?
Not always. Bounds Green straddles Haringey, Enfield and Barnet, and Stroud Green crosses into Islington. The council that collects your council tax is the one to contact.
Would my son lose his place at a day service in Haringey?
A daily trip back to Haringey from Uxbridge, Whitton or Kingston isn't practical, so the support plan should include finding activities near the new home. Raise it with the social worker early.
Can we start with a short stay?
Yes, if there is space. All three homes take respite stays as well as permanent residents, and a short stay lets the family try the journey too. See our respite care page.
