Home Care in Haringey

Visiting carers for washing, dressing, meals and medication in Haringey homes. Visits are most realistic along the Victoria line in Tottenham and Seven Sisters. In the hillier west, around Crouch End and Muswell Hill, a live-in carer is often the more reliable choice.

Yes, we can provide visiting home care in parts of Haringey. Whether we can do it at your address depends on where in the borough you live and which of our carers are free at the times you need. Ring us with the postcode and the call times, and after a free home assessment with Jackie, our registered manager, you get a written care plan before any visit starts.

East along the Victoria line, west up the hills

Our only office is on Lewisham High Street in SE13, and we have no team based in Haringey. The east of the borough is the practical side for us: Seven Sisters and Tottenham Hale are roughly 45 to 55 minutes from Lewisham, by Southeastern into London Bridge or Victoria and then straight up the Victoria line. Wood Green takes about the same, with a change to the Piccadilly line at Finsbury Park.

The west is harder. Crouch End and Muswell Hill have no station, so every journey ends on a W7, W5, 41, 91, 43 or 134 bus, and the trip runs to 60 or 75 minutes. Visiting care is a round of short calls at fixed times and only works when the carer is close by. In N8 and N10 we will offer visits only if a carer who lives locally is free, and we will tell you straight if not. Then live-in care in Haringey is usually the answer, because the carer moves in and the journey stops mattering.

What a visit can cover

Haringey's housing shapes most care plans. In Tottenham and around Broadwater Farm many older people live in walk-up flats with no lift and small bathrooms. In Crouch End, Hornsey and Stroud Green, big Victorian houses have often been split into upper-floor flats with long, narrow stairs that rule out many stairlifts and hoists. We look at all of this at the assessment and will point you to the council's equipment and adaptations service if it would help.

Hospital discharge: North Middlesex or the Whittington?

It mostly depends on the side of the borough. Tottenham, Seven Sisters, Tottenham Hale and much of central Haringey use North Middlesex University Hospital on Sterling Way, just over the border in Edmonton, part of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust since January 2025. Crouch End, Hornsey, Stroud Green, Highgate and Muswell Hill tend to use the Whittington in Archway. Whittington Health also runs Haringey's adult community services, including district nursing, and the ward plans care at home with them and Haringey Adult Social Care. If you want us involved, call while the discharge is still being planned, so we can check whether visits at that address are realistic or a short live-in arrangement makes more sense. See how our hospital discharge support works.

A free parking permit for the carer. Haringey has around 40 controlled parking zones, and some are long: Wood Green Inner runs 8am to 10pm every day. A resident who receives care at home can apply for a free resident care at home permit. It is a paper permit, valid for three years and a month, that any carer can display in their car within the zone printed on it. It does not cover council estate car parks. In N17, event-day controls add extra hours and road closures on Tottenham Hotspur Stadium match and concert days, so we plan around the fixtures.

How do I get home care through Haringey Council?

Start with a Care Act assessment, requested for yourself or someone else through the online form on the council's Care Act assessment page. Or call 020 8489 1400, choose option 1, then the option for the area where the person lives, and you will be put through to the right locality team.

If the assessment finds the person eligible, a separate financial assessment decides what they pay. Haringey's financial assessments page says that people with more than £23,250 in savings and assets will usually pay for their own care. If a personal budget is agreed, you can take it as a direct payment and use it with a CQC-registered agency such as ours. The council's Direct Payment Support Team is on 020 8489 8456.

Apply early. The Care Quality Commission's 2025 assessment rated Haringey's adult social care as requires improvement and found long waits for assessment, though waiting lists were coming down. If you pay privately, you need not wait: we quote in writing after our own assessment, never over the phone. Our guide to paying for care covers the means test and NHS Continuing Healthcare.

Memory problems and dementia support in Haringey

GPs refer people over 65 with memory concerns to the Haringey Memory Service. It is run by North London NHS Foundation Trust at St Ann's Hospital, N15, and has an Admiral Nurse and a Dementia Navigator. The council's Haynes Dementia Hub at 151 Park Road, Hornsey, runs a dementia day service and a support group for relatives, and our visits can fit around days there. Haringey has had no local Age UK since 2016, though the national Advice Line (0800 678 1602) still helps, and the Grace Organisation on Pretoria Road, N17, runs a day centre and lunch club. Concerns about any local care service, including ours, can go to Healthwatch Haringey.

Haringey home care questions

Questions families ask us about Haringey. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My dad lives off Tottenham High Road. Is that close enough for morning and evening visits?

Tottenham is one of the more reachable parts of Haringey for us, with Seven Sisters and Tottenham Hale on the Victoria line and Bruce Grove on the Weaver line. Whether we can cover both calls depends on which carers are free at those times, so ring with his postcode and the times he needs.

Mum's flat is near the Muswell Hill Broadway. Can you send a carer every day?

Muswell Hill is among the hardest parts of the borough for us to reach, with no Tube and a bus ride at the end of every journey. We will only offer daily visits if we have a carer living close by. If we do not, a live-in carer is the dependable option, and Edwardian houses in N10 often have the spare room it needs.

What happens to visits on a Spurs match day?

Roads close near the stadium and extra parking controls apply in several N17 zones. The council's advice is that visitors must arrive and park before the closures start. We check the fixture list when planning the rota and adjust the times with you if we need to.

Mum's address is in N4. How do I know whether it is Haringey or Islington?

Stroud Green and Finsbury Park straddle the boundary, so it can be one side or the other. A council tax bill will tell you. That decides which council does the needs assessment and which permit zone a carer parks in.

Can carers help with tablets that the memory service has prescribed?

Yes. We prompt or assist with medication as set out in the care plan and record every dose. Tell us at the assessment who prescribes what, and we will work alongside the GP, the pharmacy and the memory service.
