Live-in Care in Muswell Hill

One carer living in, so that a Muswell Hill couple can stay together in the house they have known for decades, from the first weeks of help through to the end of life.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Muswell Hill, Fortis Green and the rest of N10. Jackie, our registered manager, visits for a free assessment, we write the care plan with you, and a trained carer then moves into the spare room to support one person or a couple at home. Live-in care is the service we can offer most reliably in N10.

Is Muswell Hill too far for live-in care?

No. The trip from SE13 up to N10 ends with a bus climb from Highgate or Finsbury Park, which is what makes daily visits hard to staff here. A live-in carer does that journey at the start of a placement and at the end. In between they are living on the hill with your relative, so the 43 timetable stops being part of the care.

Two people, one carer

Muswell Hill has a large older population, many in the Edwardian family houses they bought long ago. Where both partners are still at home and one starts to need a lot of help, the other may be providing it at an age when that is too much.

A live-in carer can take on the heavy work for one partner, such as washing, dressing, continence care and medication, while giving the other lighter help: meals, the laundry, a hand on the walk down to the Broadway. The care plan lists what the carer does for each of them, so neither partner's needs get lost. If one of them later needs two people to move safely, we will tell you that one carer is no longer enough.

If you are worried about losing your privacy as a couple, the carer has their own room and their own time off each day, and the plan can mark out evenings or mornings that the two of you keep to yourselves.

When home is a mansion flat

In the mansion blocks along the main roads, a flat with two bedrooms can give the carer a room, and then access becomes the bigger question. Some blocks have lifts and some do not, and an older lift may be too small for a wheelchair with someone pushing it. A conversion with a long private stair to an upper floor seldom has a spare room at all, and there live-in care may not be possible. We look at the building as well as the flat at the assessment.

The handover journey up the hill

A new carer arriving with luggage usually comes by bus. The 43 runs all the way from London Bridge through Archway and Highgate to Muswell Hill, and the 134 does the same from Camden Town. Both pass Highgate station on the Northern line, which is the easiest place to change. The W7 comes up from Finsbury Park and the 144 from Wood Green and Turnpike Lane.

If family drive over to meet the new carer, the controls are short: the Muswell Hill zone runs 11am to 1pm every day including Sundays, Fortis Green 11am to 1pm on weekdays, and Muswell Hill West 10am to 2pm on weekdays, so it is easy to arrive outside those hours. The council's CPZ list has the hours for each street.

Where the carer goes on their break

Highgate Wood, managed by the City of London, lies along Muswell Hill Road, with Queen's Wood across the road and Alexandra Palace park on the eastern edge of Muswell Hill. For a wet afternoon, Muswell Hill Library on Queens Avenue is a Grade II listed building just off the Broadway. It is closed on Thursdays, which is worth knowing when the carer's breaks are planned.

If one partner can't be left during the break, the other may be happy to sit with them for an hour. If not, a family member or a short sit-in can cover it, and the care plan sets that out.

Care through to the end of life

If your parent wants to die at home, in the house where they raised the family, live-in care can make that possible. The carer handles personal care, comfort, food and drink and company through the day, while the GP and the district nurses from Whittington Health deal with clinical care, such as syringe drivers and pressure-area checks. If your relative is in the Whittington Hospital and the aim is to come home for their last weeks, tell the ward and call us straight away. Our palliative care page explains what we do and what stays with the NHS.

Try it first. If a couple are unsure about someone living in, a week or two of live-in respite care lets them try it, often while a family carer takes a break.

Funding a couple's care

If you want Haringey Council's help, each partner has their own needs assessment and financial assessment. The steps are on our Haringey live-in care page. At the end of life, or where needs are mainly health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may fund care, including a fast-track route for people nearing the end of life. We quote for one person or a couple in writing after the free assessment. For visiting care, see home care in Muswell Hill, and for live-in care in general, our London live-in care page.

Muswell Hill live-in care: your questions

Questions families ask us about Muswell Hill. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad still walks to the Broadway every day, but the hill back is getting too much. Can the carer go with him?

Yes. Keeping that walk going is a good reason for live-in care. The carer can go with him, take the bus back up if he is tired, and help him decide when a shorter route makes sense.

Mum is housebound and misses the library. Is there anything for her?

Haringey's free Home Library Service delivers books, large print, audiobooks and DVDs to people who can't get to a library, and collects them again every four weeks. The carer can help her choose and keep track of what is due back.

My husband has dementia and I still do a lot for him. Will a live-in carer take over completely?

Only as much as you want. The care plan can leave you the parts you want to keep doing, such as meals together or his evening routine, and give the carer the heavy or tiring tasks.

Mum wants to come home from the Whittington to die at home. How fast can you arrange it?

We can't promise a date before we have spoken to the ward and assessed her needs. Call us as soon as the decision is made and we will tell you honestly what we can arrange and when, and work alongside the district nurses and her GP.
