Live-in Care in Kenton

A carer in the spare room of a Kenton semi, close to Northwick Park Hospital, so a parent coming home from the ward, or a couple who have shared the house for decades, can stay put.

Yes, we arrange live-in care in Kenton, on the Harrow side of Kenton Road. Jackie, who manages the service, visits for a free assessment, we agree a written care plan, and a trained carer moves into the spare room to help with washing, dressing, meals, medication and company. Because the carer lives in, our Lewisham office being far away makes no difference to the daily care.

Can a live-in carer fit into a Kenton semi?

Usually, yes. In a typical interwar Kenton semi the layout is two good bedrooms plus a box room over the front door. That box room is enough for a live-in carer if it takes a proper single bed, somewhere for their things and a door they can close; if it is full of boxes, clearing it before the assessment saves a second visit.

The terraced cottages on the Kenmore Park estate, north of the recreation ground, can be tighter. In a two-bedroom house, moving the person's bed into the front room can free a room upstairs. A one-bedroom flat cannot take a live-in carer, so there visiting care in Kenton is the option to discuss, depending on whether we have carers free.

The single bathroom is almost always upstairs. A stairlift, a second rail or a night-time commode downstairs often decides whether the plan is safe. For bigger works, such as a ground-floor shower room, ask Harrow Council's occupational therapists about a means-tested Disabled Facilities Grant.

On Northwick Park's doorstep

Northwick Park Hospital lies just south of Kenton, so it is where most Kenton patients are discharged from, and follow-up clinics are usually there too. A live-in carer can go with the person to each appointment and note what the clinician says, so a son or daughter need not take a day off every time.

Harrow Council usually offers up to six weeks of free reablement first. If your parent will clearly need someone in the house after that, ring us before they leave hospital, so the assessment and carer matching are done before reablement ends. Our hospital discharge page has more.

Two people, one carer

For a couple, one live-in carer can take the heavy work for one partner, such as the morning wash, the stairs and the cooking, and help the other with lighter things, like the Kenton Road shopping or remembering tablets. Each person gets their own section of the care plan.

Faith often sets the shape of the week here. The Shree Kutch Satsang Swaminarayan temple and a Jain derasar are both by Kenton Road, and Kenton United Synagogue is by Woodcock Park. If a parent worships on set days or fasts on certain dates, tell us at the assessment, and the carer's hours and break are planned around it.

Changeover day at Kenton station

Handovers between carers are planned in advance, and Kenton is easy to reach with a bag. The Bakerloo line runs direct from Waterloo and Charing Cross, though not every train goes this far, so the carer needs one bound for Harrow & Wealdstone. The Overground Lioness line comes from Euston. Northwick Park station (Metropolitan line) is a short walk away, but only all-stations trains stop there.

If someone drives on changeover day, check your road on the council's CPZ map. Roads near the stations and parades may be controlled, with hours shown on the entry signs, and a resident there can buy a virtual visitor permit lasting up to 24 hours. Most residential streets further out have no controls.

Where the carer goes on a break

A live-in carer needs time out of the house every day. Kenton has somewhere to go:

  • Kenton Recreation Ground, one of Harrow's Green Flag parks, for a walk or a quiet bench. The smaller Priestmead Recreation Ground on Kingshill Drive is another option.
  • Kenton Library at 141 Kenton Lane, with free Wi-Fi so the carer can call home. It is closed on Mondays and Sundays and shuts at 1pm on Wednesdays and Fridays.
  • The Kenton Road shops, for the carer's own errands or the household shopping.

If the person cannot be left alone, a relative usually sits in during the break. The council's parks page lists the open spaces, several of which also suit a slow walk together.

Paying for live-in care in Kenton

Harrow's needs assessment, means test and direct payments are covered on our live-in care in Harrow page; homes south of Kenton Road are in Brent, covered on our Brent live-in care page. If the care is needed mainly for health reasons, NHS Continuing Healthcare can cover the whole cost, and a Northwick Park ward can start the checklist before discharge. Our written quote follows the free assessment; live-in care in London explains how placements work.

Kenton live-in care questions

Questions families ask us about Kenton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Can the live-in carer take Dad to his clinic appointments at Northwick Park?

Yes, if it is in the care plan. The carer goes with him, waits, and notes what he is told so the family has a record.

Mum and Dad both need help, in different ways. Will we need two carers?

Often one live-in carer is enough for a couple. It stops being enough if both need help through the night, or if one needs two people to move them. We will tell you which applies after we have met them both, and the written quote will reflect it.

Dad came home with a hospital bed in the front room. Where does the carer sleep?

Upstairs, in the spare room. If the carer is likely to be needed in the night, a baby monitor or call bell usually connects the two rooms. If he needs regular help through the night, we would talk about extra cover, because one carer also needs to sleep.

Mum goes to the temple for festivals and fasts on certain days. Can a carer work around that?

Yes. Give us the dates and what she eats on fast days, and they go into the care plan. The carer can go with her, and their break is moved so it doesn't clash.

Our road is near Kenton station. Where does the new carer park on changeover day?

Most carers arrive by train or Tube. If someone drives and your road is in a controlled zone, a Harrow visitor permit covers the car for up to 24 hours.
