Home Care in Wallington, Sutton (SM6)

Care at home for people in Wallington, from the villas off Manor Road and the shops on Woodcote Road to Roundshaw and the streets towards Beddington Park.

We can provide home care in Wallington. Live-in care, where a carer moves in, works anywhere in SM6. Visiting care depends on whether we have a carer near enough for the times you need, so we check that with you before anything is agreed. The first step is a free assessment in the person's own home.

From Victorian villas to Roundshaw

Wallington's housing tells the story of how it grew. In the 1860s Nathaniel Bridges developed an estate of Gothic revival villas and sponsored Holy Trinity Church on Manor Road, and Victorian and Edwardian villas still line roads such as Clifton Road, Belmont Road and Park Road. Building then spread south towards Woodcote, and by the First World War the stretch of Woodcote Road past the station had become the high street. Between the wars came the semis and short terraces that make up most of the town now.

Roundshaw, on the southern edge, is different again. It was built from 1965 on the site of the old Croydon Airport, originally as concrete flats and maisonettes.

What this means at an assessment:

  • A large villa usually has a spare bedroom for a live-in carer, but may have a long staircase and a first-floor bathroom.
  • An interwar semi often has a straight staircase that suits a stairlift, and a box room that can take a live-in carer.
  • In a flat or maisonette, entry systems, lifts and where equipment can be stored matter more, and a key safe needs the freeholder's or landlord's agreement.

Housing with Care: Cloverdale Court and Dymond House

Two of Sutton Council's three Housing with Care schemes are in Wallington: Cloverdale Court on Stanley Park Road and Dymond House on Redford Avenue. They are flats for people aged 55 and over with an on-site care team, and the council's Housing with Care page says applicants must be assessed as needing at least five hours of care and support. Ask about them through Sutton's Contact Centre on 020 8770 5000.

We mention them because families often weigh up a move like this against care at home. Staying put with care brought in keeps the person in their own house and street. A Housing with Care flat gives a smaller home with staff on site. The council assessment is the place to talk through both.

Is it St Helier or Croydon?

Wallington sits close to the Croydon border, which shapes where people are treated. Most residents go to St Helier Hospital in Carshalton, but some may be taken to Croydon University Hospital. Whichever hospital it is, the care at home afterwards is arranged by Sutton Council if you live in the borough, because care follows the address. If someone is discharged from Croydon, make sure the ward knows the home address is in Sutton. Buses 127 and 157 run from Wallington station and the town centre to Carshalton, and the 157 stops at St Helier Hospital.

How much does home care in Wallington cost?

We cannot give you a figure before we have met the person, because the cost depends on what help is needed, when, and how often. After our free assessment, we put the price in writing.

If the council is involved, Sutton carries out a financial assessment after it has agreed a care plan. Its guidance says it usually funds people with savings under £23,250; above that, you pay the full cost, though you can still ask the council to arrange care for a fee. A council personal budget can be paid as a direct payment onto a prepaid card, which you can use to pay an agency of your choice. If care needs are mainly health needs, ask the GP or ward about NHS Continuing Healthcare. Start the council route online through the Sutton process on our borough page, or on 020 8770 5000.

Distance, said plainly. Wallington is on the far side of south London from our Lewisham office. By train it means London Bridge and Southern, or a change at Norwood Junction and West Croydon, roughly an hour or more each way. That is fine for a live-in carer who travels once and stays. For short daily visits, we only agree times we can cover.

Live-in care and respite in SM6

With live-in care, one carer lives in, helps with personal care, meals, medication and company through the day, and has their own room and daily breaks. The same arrangement for a week or two gives a family carer a proper break. Family carers can also ask Sutton Council for a carer's assessment, which can lead to respite or a carer's personal budget.

Wallington FAQs

Wallington FAQs

Questions families ask us about Wallington. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum was taken to Croydon University Hospital, but she lives in Wallington. Who arranges her care at home?

Sutton Council, because she lives in the London Borough of Sutton. Tell the ward her address so the discharge is planned with Sutton, and call us if you want private care or a direct-payment arrangement in place for when she gets home.

Dad has applied for Dymond House. Can he have care at home while he waits?

Yes. Care at home can cover the time before a move, and the council's assessment for Housing with Care looks at his care needs anyway. Tell us about the application at our assessment so the plan can be short-term if needed.

Do you cover Roundshaw and Beddington?

Yes. Roundshaw, Beddington and Hackbridge are all in the London Borough of Sutton. We offer live-in care across them all, and visiting care where we can staff it.

Our Victorian house in Wallington has four bedrooms. Does that make live-in care easier?

It helps a lot. The carer's main requirement is a private bedroom. We would also look at the bathroom, the stairs and where the person spends their day before suggesting how the house should be set up.
