Home Care in Cheam (SM2 and SM3)
Live-in care, personal care and dementia support at home in Cheam Village, South Cheam and the roads around Nonsuch Park.
Yes, we provide care at home in Cheam. Live-in care is the most dependable option here because our office is in Lewisham, across London; regular visits are possible when we have a carer close enough, so ask us about the times you need. We begin with a free assessment at home.
Cheam's houses and what they mean for care
Cheam Village grew up at a crossroads, and its centre still has the feel of an old village: Whitehall, a timber-framed house built around 1500 and now a museum, St Dunstan's church beside the older Lumley Chapel, and a parade of independent shops on the Broadway. The entrance to Nonsuch Park is a couple of hundred yards from the crossroads.
Away from the village the roads are mostly interwar, with a high share of detached houses by London standards, larger Edwardian homes to the south, and some low-rise flats near the station. For care, that usually means:
- Space for a live-in carer. A detached or large semi-detached house nearly always has the spare bedroom a live-in carer needs.
- Gardens and drives. Pleasant to look out on, but uneven paths, a step down to the patio or a sloping drive can make falls more likely. We check the route in and out of the house at the assessment.
- Living alone in a big house. Long-settled residents can end up alone in a family-sized home, using two rooms. Care that includes company and a walk to the shops or the park matters as much as help with washing.

Parking near Cheam Village
Most of Cheam has unrestricted parking, but streets near the village fall in the Park Lane, Cheam controlled parking zone, one of a handful listed on the council's CPZ page. If the person lives inside it, there are three options for carers who drive. Each household in a zone gets 50 free visitor hours a year. Someone with an evidenced care need can buy a Resident Care Permit (£43 a year) that any of their carers can use. And care providers can buy a Carer permit (£54 a year) for stays of up to three hours. It is worth sorting this out before care starts. Cheam station has Southern trains towards Sutton and London Victoria, and buses 151, 213 and SL7 run through Cheam.
Dementia support around Cheam
Diagnosis comes through the GP, who can refer to the Sutton Memory Assessment Service run by South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust. After that, the main local source of help is Age UK Sutton's Sutton Dementia Hub, which runs a dementia adviser service, peer support groups, dementia cafes and singing and exercise groups. Sutton Council also lists an Admiral Nurse service, specialist dementia nurses for families, which takes self-referrals. Age UK Sutton's Living Well Centre is close by in North Cheam, behind Cheam Leisure Centre on Malden Road; call them for what runs there now.
At home, our dementia care rests on routine and familiar faces. A live-in carer is often the best fit when someone is restless at night or no longer safe to be left alone during the day.
Before you call the council, write down the hard days. Sutton's assessment asks how a condition affects everyday tasks. A week's notes on what went wrong, such as missed meals, a fall, medication muddles or getting lost, will make the conversation with Adult Social Care far more useful.
Can the council help pay for home care in Cheam?
Possibly. Sutton Council says it usually helps adults whose condition affects at least two everyday tasks and who have less than £23,250 in savings; above that you pay the full cost, though the council can still arrange care for a fee. If the care is in your own home, the house itself isn't counted, so the test turns on savings and income. Start with the council's online care needs checklist or 020 8770 5000. If you will be paying privately anyway, you can come straight to us for a free assessment and a written quote. The full council process is on our Sutton borough page.
Live-in care, or a short break
A live-in carer moves into the home, has their own room and takes breaks each day. In a large Cheam house it can also work for a couple, with full care for one partner and lighter help for the other. For a spouse who is the main carer, a live-in carer for a week or two is a practical form of respite, and Sutton Carers Centre and a council carer's assessment can help with longer-term support.

Cheam questions answered
Questions families ask us about Cheam. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum's road is near the village. Will her carers get parking tickets?
Check whether her street is in the Park Lane, Cheam CPZ. If it is, a Resident Care Permit lets any of her carers park in permit bays, and her household's free visitor hours help too. Outside the zone, most Cheam streets are unrestricted.
Dad has just been diagnosed with dementia. What should we do first in Cheam?
Contact the Sutton Dementia Hub at Age UK Sutton for advice and groups, ask Sutton Council for a care needs assessment if he needs help day to day, and call us when you want to talk about care at home.
Is North Cheam covered by this page?
We cover North Cheam too. It is a separate area around the London Road and Malden Road crossroads, about a mile north of the village, and the same council process applies.
My parents have a large house near Nonsuch Park and want to stay together. Is one live-in carer enough?
Often, yes, when one parent needs most of the care. If both need a lot of help, including at night, we will say so at the assessment and talk through what would be safe.
