Home Care in Belmont, Sutton (SM2)

Care at home for people in Belmont, from Station Road and the streets off Brighton Road to the houses around the Royal Marsden and Sutton Hospital campus.

Yes, we provide home care in Belmont. Belmont is at the far southern edge of London and a long way from our Lewisham office, so a live-in carer is the arrangement we can offer most reliably; regular visits are possible only when we have a carer living nearby, so ask us. Everything starts with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.

Coming home from the Marsden or the Malvern Centre

Belmont is unusual among London neighbourhoods because a major hospital campus sits in the middle of its houses. The Royal Marsden's Sutton site on Downs Road is a specialist cancer hospital, and next to it on Cotswold Road is the old Sutton Hospital site, where Epsom and St Helier runs the Malvern Centre for outpatient and community services. Together they are planned as the London Cancer Hub. Neither has an A&E, so an emergency admission still usually means St Helier Hospital in Carshalton.

For a Belmont family, the campus shapes what care at home looks like. Someone may be living with cancer and travelling to appointments a few streets away, or coming home after treatment tired and needing help with washing, meals and medication prompts. Later on, some people want palliative care at home, with carers working alongside the community nurses and palliative team from Sutton Health and Care. Tell us about the treatment plan at the assessment, so the care plan fits around clinic days.

Belmont's streets and houses

Belmont village grew up along the A217 Brighton Road, with its own small parade of independent shops and restaurants on Station Road. The station was called California when it opened in 1865, after a local pub, and took the name Belmont ten years later. Most homes are interwar and Edwardian semis and detached houses with gardens. There are also the art deco Chilterns flats on Brighton Road, and Belmont Heights, built on the site of the former Belmont Hospital west of Brighton Road.

Family houses usually have the spare bedroom a live-in carer needs, and room for a stairlift or a bed downstairs if the stairs become too much. Newer flats on old hospital land tend to have lifts and level thresholds, which makes wheelchairs, hoists and walk-in showers easier to fit.

Parking in the Belmont CPZ. Belmont is one of only a handful of Sutton neighbourhoods with a Controlled Parking Zone, aimed at the streets near the hospitals. If the person receiving care lives inside it, Sutton Council sells a Resident Care Permit that any of their carers can use. Check whether the address is in the zone before visits start.

Getting to Belmont

Belmont station is on the Southern branch from Sutton to Epsom Downs, one stop south of Sutton. The S3 bus stops at the Royal Marsden, and the 80 and 280 run between Sutton town centre and Belmont. From Lewisham, a carer would take a train into London Bridge, another out to Sutton, then the branch train or a bus: well over an hour each way. That is why we are careful about promising daily visits here.

How do I get council-funded home care in Belmont?

Belmont is in the London Borough of Sutton, so start with Sutton Adult Social Care. Complete the online care needs checklist on the council's request a care needs assessment page, or phone 020 8770 5000 (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday). The council says it usually helps people with under £23,250 in savings; above that you can still ask it to arrange care, but you pay the full cost. If care needs come mainly from a health condition, for example late-stage cancer, ask the clinical team about NHS Continuing Healthcare and fast-track funding at the end of life before assuming the council route applies. Our Sutton home care page covers the council process, and our paying for care guide explains Continuing Healthcare. For private care we give a written quote after the assessment.

Live-in care and short breaks

Treatment at the Marsden often comes in cycles, with harder weeks after each one. A live-in carer who is already in the house can do more in those weeks and step back in the better ones, without anyone having to re-book visits, and distance from Lewisham makes no difference once they have moved in. If a partner is doing the caring through a course of treatment, a live-in carer can also cover a week or two while they rest (see respite care). For adults who need a supported setting, our Kingston supported living home is the nearest of our three homes and can take short stays.

Belmont questions

Questions families ask us about Belmont. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My husband is having treatment at the Royal Marsden. Can a carer help on clinic days?

Yes. A carer can help him get ready, prepare something light to eat and settle him when he gets home. With live-in care this fits into the normal day. For visits only, we need to check we have a carer free at the right times before we agree.

Our street is in the Belmont CPZ. Will carers get parking tickets?

They shouldn't. A Resident Care Permit from Sutton Council can be used by any carer visiting you and lasts a year. Care agencies can also buy an organisation permit, which allows up to three hours per visit in any Sutton CPZ bay.

Mum lives in one of the newer flats on the old hospital land. Is live-in care possible there?

Only if there is a second bedroom for the carer. If the flat has one bedroom, the options are visiting care where we can staff it, or a move to somewhere with a spare room. We will talk through both at the assessment.

Dad was admitted to St Helier, not the Marsden. Who arranges his discharge?

The ward team plans it, often with the council's free START reablement service, which can support someone at home for up to six weeks. Call us while he is still on the ward if you want private care to follow on. Our hospital discharge page explains how that works.
