Home Care in Barkingside, IG6
Support at home for older and disabled adults living along Barkingside High Street, around Fullwell Cross and Mossford Green, and in the interwar streets towards Fairlop.
Yes, we provide home care in Barkingside. Live-in care is available at any IG6 home with a spare bedroom. Visiting care is possible where we have a carer who can make the journey reliably, so we confirm that before agreeing a rota. It all starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.
What Barkingside is like to care in
Barkingside is a long High Street running south from the Fullwell Cross roundabout, with houses spreading out on either side. Most of them are interwar semis and terraces, with newer flats close to the shops. The semis usually have three bedrooms and a little more space on the landing and in the bathroom than the Edwardian terraces further south in Ilford, which helps when someone needs a perching stool, grab rails or a carer standing alongside in the shower.
It is also a place with a lot within reach on foot or by bus. The circular Grade II listed library at Fullwell Cross, designed by Frederick Gibberd alongside the leisure centre, Holy Trinity Church from 1840, the High Street shops, and the recreation ground at Mossford Green are all ordinary outings that a companionship visit can build in. Barnardo's, founded here in 1866, still has its headquarters in Barkingside. Fairlop Waters country park is just to the north-east.
How do I arrange council-funded home care in Barkingside?
A Barkingside address goes to Redbridge Adult Social Services, which decides on council support in three stages:
- Ask for a Care Act needs assessment. The council's quickest route is the online referral form on its Adult Care contact page; if you cannot use it, phone 020 8708 7333. The assessment is free.
- If needs are eligible, the council carries out a financial assessment to decide what it pays and what the person contributes. Its paying for care page explains the rules.
- Whatever the council agrees to fund can be paid to you as a direct payment, which you then spend on the agency you choose, including us.
For equipment and adaptations, such as a second banister or a bath board, the council's Occupational Therapy Team has a separate online referral. If you are paying privately, we quote in writing after our own assessment. NHS Continuing Healthcare is a separate, health-led route for people whose needs are mainly medical. The Redbridge home care page has more on the borough as a whole.
Central line, buses and the trip from SE13
Barkingside station is on the Hainault loop of the Central line, between Newbury Park and Fairlop, tucked at the end of Station Road. Its step-free access is eastbound only, worth knowing if a carer is taking someone with a wheelchair or rollator into town. Buses are the stronger link: the 169 and 247 stop by the station, and the 128, 150, 167, 275 and 462 also run along Barkingside High Street.
From our Lewisham office, Barkingside is typically 60 to 75 minutes each way. We have no base in Redbridge. That is why we only offer regular visits here when we have a carer whose own journey makes them sustainable, and why live-in care is often the steadier choice.
Discharge from King George. Most Barkingside patients go to King George Hospital on Barley Lane, Goodmayes, a short drive or bus ride south-east. Before discharge, the ward contacts Redbridge Adult Social Care, and reablement may come first. Call us as soon as discharge is being discussed. See our hospital discharge support.
Live-in and respite, in brief
Live-in. One carer living in the spare room, covering personal care, meals, medication and company through the day, with breaks agreed in the care plan. It works well in Barkingside's three-bedroom semis, and for couples.
Respite. A live-in carer for a week or two, or sit-in visits where we can staff them, gives a family carer time off. The council arranges breaks only after a free carer's assessment, and Redbridge Carers Support Service can help carers through it. Our Redbridge respite page explains more.

Barkingside: your questions
Questions families ask us about Barkingside. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionCan a carer help Mum with her shopping on Barkingside High Street?
Yes. Going with her, carrying the bags and helping her put things away can all be part of a visit. If she uses a rollator, the carer can walk at her pace and plan rest stops.
Is Fairlop or Fullwell Cross covered too?
Yes. Both share the IG6 postcode with Barkingside, as does part of Hainault. The same rule applies: live-in care anywhere, visits where we have a carer who can reach you.
Dad is waiting for a memory assessment. Can you start before a diagnosis?
Yes. Care is based on what he needs now. The GP refers to the NHS Redbridge Memory Service in Newbury Park, one stop down the Central line, and our dementia care can begin in the meantime.
Our semi has a downstairs toilet but the bath is upstairs. What are the options?
We look at the stairs and bathroom at the assessment. Common answers are a strip wash downstairs on some days, a bath lift or board, or a referral to the council's Occupational Therapy Team for a level-access shower or stairlift.
Do you have carers who live in Barkingside?
We cannot promise that. Our office is in Lewisham, and who is available changes. When you call, we will tell you plainly whether we can cover the visits you need.
