Home Care in Wanstead and Snaresbrook, E11
Visiting and live-in care along Wanstead High Street and in the roads between Wanstead Park, Wanstead Flats and Eagle Pond.
Yes, we provide home care in Wanstead. Wanstead is one of the easier parts of Redbridge for us to reach from Lewisham, so visiting care is realistic here when we have a carer free at your times, and live-in care is available in any home with a spare bedroom. We start with a free assessment at home and agree a written care plan with you.
A high street with a station at each end
Wanstead keeps the feel of the village it was. The High Street runs between Wanstead station and Snaresbrook station, both on the Central line. Along it are the Georgian terrace near The George pub, Christ Church, cafes and the bust of Winston Churchill. The homes in the side roads are mostly Victorian and Edwardian houses and interwar semis, with flats close to the High Street.
The older houses are often generous in size but awkward for frailty: half-landings, narrow original stairs and bathrooms that were added later in whatever space there was. The interwar semis are simpler. In both, a spare bedroom for a live-in carer is usually there; in a High Street flat it may not be.
Forest on the doorstep
Wanstead is wrapped in Epping Forest land. Wanstead Park, with its lakes from the old Wanstead House estate, lies to the south, Wanstead Flats is open grassland beyond, and Eagle Pond sits beside Snaresbrook Crown Court. For someone who is less steady on their feet, this is a real asset. A companionship visit can be a slow walk along the High Street or a sit by Eagle Pond, if that is what your relative enjoys.
The Allan Burgess Centre, Grove Park. Age UK Redbridge, Barking and Havering runs its Activity Centre at 2 Grove Park, E11 2DL, Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 3.30pm (020 8989 6338), including nail-cutting appointments. If your relative goes there, we can plan care visits around their days at the centre.
Which hospital will Wanstead patients come home from?
Usually Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone, run by Barts Health. It sits just over the border in Waltham Forest, but that does not change who arranges social care: for a Wanstead address it is still Redbridge. Hospital staff contact Redbridge Adult Social Care to arrange a discharge assessment, and a period of reablement may follow. If you want private care in place for the first day home, tell the ward as soon as a date is discussed, and read our hospital discharge support page. Locally, The Evergreen Surgery is a GP practice at 26 High Street (E11 2AQ).
From Lewisham to E11
A carer from our area takes the DLR to Stratford and then the Central line to Wanstead or Snaresbrook, roughly 45 minutes. Buses 66, 101, 145, 308, W12 and W13 stop at Wanstead station. By car it is the Blackwall Tunnel and the A12. Streets near both stations have parking controls; a carer who drives may need a visitor permit from you.
Arranging care through Redbridge Council
To ask the council for help, request a Care Act needs assessment from Redbridge Adult Social Services, using the online referral form or by phoning 020 8708 7333. It is free. If your relative has eligible needs, a financial assessment follows, and council funding can be taken as a direct payment and used with an agency. Our Redbridge home care page explains the route in more detail.
Time off for the family carer
If you are the one doing the caring, you can ask Redbridge for a carer's assessment and a break; the council arranges respite only after that assessment. Privately, we can cover a week or two with a live-in carer, or sit with your relative for an afternoon when we have someone available. More on our Redbridge respite page.

Questions from Wanstead families
Questions families ask us about Wanstead. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum is in Whipps Cross, which is in Waltham Forest. Does Waltham Forest Council arrange her care?
No. Social care follows where she lives, so for a Wanstead address it is Redbridge Adult Social Services, even though the hospital is across the border.
Can a carer walk with Dad in Wanstead Park?
Yes, if it is in his care plan and safe for him. We will agree a route and a distance at the assessment, and think about what happens on wet or icy days.
She goes to the Allan Burgess Centre three days a week. Can you work around that?
Yes. Care visits can be timed to help her get ready in the morning and settle in the evening on centre days, with longer visits on the other days.
Is Snaresbrook covered as well as Wanstead?
Yes. We cover both sides of the High Street, Snaresbrook and Aldersbrook, and the rest of Redbridge including South Woodford.
