Home Care in Clayhall, IG5
Care at home for older people and adults with disabilities in Clayhall's 1930s semis, between Gants Hill, Barkingside and the Roding valley. Live-in care is available across IG5, and visits depend on whether we have a carer for your times.
Yes, we provide home care in Clayhall. A live-in carer can move into any Clayhall house with a spare bedroom, and many of the 1930s semis here have one. Visiting care is possible too, but Clayhall has no station and is a long trip from our Lewisham office, so we confirm we have a carer who can reach you before we agree to regular visits. Care always begins with a free home assessment.
A 1930s suburb on old manor land
Clayhall was a manor estate, first recorded in 1203, until 1935, when it was broken up into building plots. The semi-detached houses that went up over the following years still make up most of the district. They line roads off Clayhall Avenue and Woodford Avenue, with Clayhall Park, one of Ilford's largest open spaces, in Longwood Gardens.
A 1930s semi is a good house to receive care in. There is often a front room that can take a bed if the stairs become too much, and sometimes a third bedroom for a live-in carer. The weak point is often the bathroom. Many still have the original upstairs bathroom, sometimes updated but still with a bath. Redbridge's Occupational Therapy Team can assess for equipment and adaptations, and we plan the personal care around what is in place.
No station: how carers get to Clayhall
The nearest Central line stations are Gants Hill, Barkingside and Redbridge, each a bus ride or a fair walk from most Clayhall roads. From Lewisham that makes the journey roughly 60 to 75 minutes each way: the DLR to Stratford, the Central line to Gants Hill, then a bus. The 123 and 179 run along Woodford Avenue past Longwood Gardens to Gants Hill. The 169 ends at Clayhall (The Glade) and runs through Barkingside, and the 128 starts at Claybury Broadway and heads through Gants Hill to Romford.
We will tell you plainly whether your visit times are workable. If regular visits are not realistic, live-in care in Redbridge avoids the problem altogether.
Parking is usually easier here. Most of Clayhall's residential roads are outside the controlled parking zones around Gants Hill and Barkingside stations. Check your own street on the council's permit parking zones map. If it is in a zone, a carer who drives will need one of your visitor permits.
How much does home care cost in Clayhall?
We don't publish prices, because they depend on what the care involves. We give private clients a written quote after our free assessment. If you would like the council to contribute, Redbridge Adult Social Services first assesses needs, which is free whatever the person's finances, and then means-tests. Government Care Act guidance sets out the capital limits, and the value of the home is not counted when the care is received at home. If the council funds care, you can take it as a direct payment and use it to pay an agency such as ours. Our paying for care guide also explains NHS Continuing Healthcare.
Asking Redbridge for help with a Clayhall address
Clayhall is in the London Borough of Redbridge, so the route is the same as anywhere else in the borough. Use the online referral form on the Adult Care contact page, or phone 020 8708 7333 if the form doesn't suit. Our home care in Redbridge page covers the process and hospital discharge.
When memory is the worry
The NHS Redbridge Memory Service is based in Newbury Park, a short drive east, and takes referrals from the GP. Age UK Redbridge, Barking and Havering runs a Dementia Advice Service for Redbridge residents over 50 and their carers. Our dementia care keeps routines familiar, down to the same walk round Clayhall Park.
Live-in care and short breaks
Where both partners need some help, live-in care can be the better fit. One carer living in the spare bedroom can give personal care to one partner and lighter help to the other, without either leaving the house. We arrange the carer's breaks and days off.
A family carer who needs time off can ask Redbridge for a free carer's assessment, which comes before any council-arranged break. We can provide respite care in the form of a live-in carer for a week or two, or extra visits where we can staff them.

Clayhall: common questions
Questions families ask us about Clayhall. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionCan we turn Mum's front room into a bedroom?
Often, yes. In a 1930s semi the front room usually takes a bed, and the main question is the toilet and washing. We look at both during the assessment, and the council's Occupational Therapy Team can advise on a commode, rails or a downstairs WC.
Dad still likes to watch the bowls in Clayhall Park. Can a carer take him?
Yes, if it is written into his care plan. A companionship visit can include a walk to the park and time sitting out. We will check at the assessment how far he can comfortably walk.
Our road has no parking restrictions. Does that help?
It makes things easier for a carer who drives. It doesn't change the length of the trip from Lewisham, so we still check we have a carer who can cover your visit times.
My parents both need some help. Is live-in care for two possible?
Yes. One live-in carer can support a couple, as long as the combined needs are manageable for one person, including at night. We assess both of them before we agree a plan.
Do you have carers based in Clayhall or Gants Hill?
No. Nobody works from a Redbridge base: visiting carers come out from south-east London, and live-in carers move in. For IG5 we agree visit times only once we know a carer can manage the bus from Gants Hill reliably.
