Home Care in Hornsey, N8
Care at home around Hornsey High Street, Priory Park and the streets off Park Road, between Crouch End and Wood Green.
Yes, we provide home care in Hornsey. Live-in care is the most dependable option here, because the carer moves in and the distance from our Lewisham office no longer matters; visiting care is possible where we have a carer free at the times you need, so ask us first. Every arrangement starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.
The old village, not the busy one
Hornsey is the original parish that Crouch End grew out of, and it still feels like the quieter half. Its centre is Hornsey High Street, with the medieval tower of St Mary's church standing on its own in the old churchyard, and Priory Park and the New River close by. Walk a few minutes in any direction and it is residential: long Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many of them divided into flats, a handful of council estates near the High Street, and newer blocks built on former industrial land beside the railway.
Each part of that mix changes the care plan. The newer blocks on the old industrial land by the railway usually have lifts and level-access bathrooms, so a wheelchair, a hoist or a hospital bed is straightforward, and a two-bedroom flat there may take a live-in carer. On the estates near the High Street, the first questions are which floor the flat is on and whether there is a working lift. In the converted terraces, a ground-floor flat is often easy to work in; the upper flat in the same house is a different job, and we check the stairs carefully at the assessment.
A dementia hub on Park Road
Hornsey has one thing much of the borough doesn't: the council's Haynes Dementia Hub at 151 Park Road (N8 8JD, 020 8489 5925). It runs a day service for people with moderate or severe dementia (referred by a social worker, a GP or through the council's First Response team, and subject to a financial assessment), a drop-in Day Opportunities Hub, free Zoom sessions twice a week and a Relative Support Group for family carers.
For a Hornsey family, the hub and care at home fit together well. Our dementia care can cover the mornings and evenings around hub days. If there is no diagnosis yet, the GP can refer to the Haringey Memory Service at St Ann's Hospital.
Parking varies street by street. The three Hornsey controlled parking zones have very different hours, according to the council's CPZ hours list: Hornsey North runs 8am to 6.30pm on weekdays, Hornsey North East 10am to 2pm and Hornsey South 11am to 1pm. A carer visiting in a car needs to know which one the house is in.
Getting here, and how far it is from Lewisham
Hornsey station is on the Great Northern line, two stops from Finsbury Park, where the Victoria and Piccadilly lines meet. Turnpike Lane on the Piccadilly line is a short bus ride east along Turnpike Lane. From our office in Lewisham it is usually an hour or a little more by train and Tube, so regular visiting rounds depend on having a carer who lives within reach. We will tell you honestly whether we do.
How do I get a council care assessment in Hornsey?
Hornsey is in the London Borough of Haringey. Call Haringey Adult Social Care on 020 8489 1400, choose option 1 and then the option for your area, or use the council's online ask us about care and support form. If the council agrees there are eligible needs, a financial assessment decides what you pay, and the support can come as a direct payment that you use with an agency such as ours. NHS Continuing Healthcare is a separate route for people whose needs are mainly health needs. We quote in writing after our own assessment. Our Haringey home care page covers the wider borough.
Most Hornsey residents who need a hospital go to the Whittington in Archway. If a discharge is coming up, tell the ward that home care is being arranged and give us the likely date; our hospital discharge page explains how we fit around it.
Live-in care and respite
A whole Victorian or Edwardian house in Hornsey nearly always has the spare bedroom a live-in carer needs; a one-bedroom conversion does not. If you are the family carer and need a week off, a live-in carer can cover it as respite care. Carers First runs Haringey's carers' support service, and the council offers a carer's assessment in its own right.

Hornsey questions
Questions families ask us about Hornsey. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionDad goes to the Haynes on Park Road. Can a carer get him ready on hub days?
Yes, if we have a carer available for those mornings. The visit would cover washing, dressing, breakfast and medication so he is ready when he is collected or taken, and we can add an evening visit for when he gets back.
Mum lives in the top flat of a converted terrace. Is that a problem?
It shapes the plan more than it rules anything out. We look at the stairs, the bathroom and whether equipment can be carried up, and we may suggest asking the council for an occupational therapy assessment. If she has no spare room, live-in care won't work there, but visits might.
Is Hornsey covered by your Crouch End and Wood Green work too?
Yes. We cover all of Haringey, including N8 from Hornsey Vale and Priory Park up to the Wood Green border. Coverage for visits still depends on carer availability, which we check when you call.
Which hospital will my relative come home from?
Usually the Whittington in Archway, run by Whittington Health NHS Trust, which also provides district nursing in Haringey. Some patients are taken to North Middlesex in Edmonton instead, so check with the ward.
